Chapter 10: Broken Karts and Hearts
~🏅~
Wynnchel and Duncan zoomed to the palace on their motorcycles, dreading to have to give their king the bad news.
~🍩~
King Candy paced around in his throne room nervously, as Sour Bill waved him with a large lollipop in an attempt to calm him down.
King Candy gasped when the castle doors opened, Wynnchel and Duncan hung their heads as they walked up to their king.
"Did you found him? Tell me you found him!" King Candy begged.
Duncan looked at Wynnchel, who shook his head sadly.
"You didn't!" King Candy laughed hopelessly. "GO! Leave me."
The donut cops left, King Candy hung his head in fear and anxiety. He shot his head up when an idea came to mind, he stormed over to a door behind his throne. Sour Bill quickly hurried after him, still fanning him with the lollipop.
~🍬~
King Candy emerged out of an elevator door with a serious look, he marched through the hallway with an anxious Sour Bill behind him.
King Candy approached a large door, which rests an NES controller. He pulled out a napkin from Tappers from his pocket, which had the code written on it.
"Up, up down, down," he mumbled the code to himself as he pushed the buttons. "Start!"
The door swung open, Sour Bill tightened a red licorice rope around King Candy's waist.
"Oh, the code! It's the sweet lifeblood of the game!" He smiled before jumping into the darkness, he floated towards a giant web of glowing threads connected to an endless number of vault-like boxes.
"Where are you? Let's see..." King Candy floated about in the web cautiously, searching for a certain box. "Stadium, no. Jumbotron. Ha-ha! There it is! The winner's cup!"
He double clicked on a purple box labeled 'Winner's Cup' with an image of a trophy on it. Inside floats a bunch of smaller boxes with a coin inside them.
King Candy swiped through the coins. "One of these things are not like the others...it's YOU!" He grabbed the medal box with a smirk.
"We're gonna give you a nice new home." The king floated up to a very special box. It was large and connected to the most threads out of all the boxes. It's labeled 'King Candy.'
King Candy double clicked it, opening to show tons of threads and boxes inside it. He slid the medal box inside the web, it took a moment for it to connect to the box, but within seconds the medal was around King Candy's neck.
"Success!" King Candy chuckled, he tugged on the rope, signaling Sour Bill to pull the rope back.
"Sour Bill! I'm going out! You're in charge of the castle until I get back!" King Candy ordered as he float back to the door.
Far away from the web, a box with no threads attached to it labeled 'Vanello Von Schweetz' glitched.

As Calhoun piloted the shuttle through Sugar Rush, she glanced at the Cy-Bug sensor on the dash as it scanned.
She then looked over to where Felix was sitting and noticed him smiling at her dreamily with a blush.
"Your face is still red. You might wanna hit it again with your hammer." Calhoun stated.
"Oh, that's not blunt force trauma, ma'am. That's just the honey glow on my cheeks." Felix answered as he leaned his cheek on his hand, a lovestruck look in his eyes.
"Okay." Calhoun scooted away cautiously.
"Ma'am...I just gotta tell you, you are one dynamite gal." Felix swooned.
Calhoun's eyes widened, memories of her fiancé filled her head.
~🪲~
In the training room, Calhoun shot her gun at the Cy-Bug target.
"Wow," She turned around to see a handsome soldier named Brad smiling dreamily at her. "You are one dynamite gal."
~🪲~
"One dynamite gal." Brad put his hands on top of Calhoun's as they were on a milkshake date.
~🪲~
"Dynamite gal." Brad and Calhoun clicked their glasses of wine together as they had a picnic, a beautiful sunset behind them.
~🪲~
"Dynamite gal." Brad said on one knee as he presented a beautiful engagement ring to Calhoun.
~🪲~
Brad linked arms with Calhoun as they stood in front of the priest on their wedding day.
"Dynamite-" Before he could finish, glass shattered and a giant Cy-Bug flew in.
~🪲~
"AHHHH!" Calhoun screamed, startling Felix. She swerved the ship hard to the right, landing the ship at the path to the castle.
"GET OUT!" Calhoun commanded, not even looking at Felix.
"All I said is you're a dynamite gal!" Felix said, not understanding the trauma he had reminded Calhoun of.
"I SAID GET OUT!" Calhoun yelled, pain in her voice
Felix began to climb out, he turned to say something else, but the glass came down immediately and the ship lifted off.
"Jimminy jamminy." Felix sighed as he began to walk the path to the castle.
~🔨~
Felix knocked on the castle door, his hat in his hands with a heartbroken look on his face.
"Yes?"
Felix looked up to see the door open, but no one was there. He then looked down and saw Sour Bill looking up at him skeptically.
"I'm Fix-It Felix Jr, sir, from the game Fix-It Felix Jr." Felix introduced with a sad tone in his voice as he stared at the ground. "Have you seen my friends Ralph and (Name)?"
"Wreck-It Ralph? (Name), as in the girl with no game?" Sour Bill guessed.
"Yes! Yes, that's them!" Felix smiled, placing his hat back on his head.
"We shoulda locked them both up when we had the chance." Sour Bill scowled.
"Locked them up?"
"I'm not making the same mistake with you." Sour Bill pulled a rope from behind the door.
The tile Felix was standing on disappeared, revealing itself to be a trapdoor. He screamed and fell down into the darkness.
Sour Bill looked down at the trap door before closing it up.
~🍬~
"Hurry, hurry! Let's go! Time's a waistin'! Vanello exclaimed as he raced out of the secret door. "Come on, guys!"
"Alright, alright! We're coming!" (Name) smiled as she emerged out of the door with Ralph, who was pushing the kart.
"This is it! This is really happening! I almost don't believe it, I mean, I have dreamt about it for so long!" Vanello rambled as he glitched around. "And now...and now...now I think I'm going to puke. I mean, I think I might puke. You know, like a 'vurp.'"
"A what?" Ralph asked while (Name) tilted her head.
"Vomit and a burp together, and you can taste it, and it's just like rising up." Vanello exclaimed before spinning around. "Oh, this is so exciting!"
"Yes, it is! Exciting!" Ralph agreed, clenching his fist enthusiastically.
"I mean, am I ready to be a real racer?" Vanello wondered before turning to his friends with a worried look. "Guys, what if the gamers don't like me?"
"Why wouldn't they? There's so much to love about to you, Vanello!" (Name) insisted, making Vanello blush.
"Exactly! Who doesn't love a brat with dirty hair?" Ralph added, making (Name) glare at him a little and Vanello worry again.
"Come on," Ralph leaned down to Vanello's level. "Those racers are gonna love you. You know why? Because you're a winner."
"I'm a winner." Vanello nodded.
"And you're adorable!" (Name) added.
"I'M ADORABLE!" Vanello beamed.
"And everyone loves an adorable winner!"
"Yeah!" Vanello pumped a fist in the air and spun around.
Ralph chuckled. "Okay, come on."
Vanello opened the door for (Name), she climbed into the back seat. Vanello then hopped in the driver's seat while Ralph climbed on the back of the kart.
"Listen to me, if you get nervous, just keep telling yourself, 'I must win Ralph's medal. Or his life will be ruined.'" Ralph advised.
Vanello looked down in thought while (Name) gave Ralph an annoyed look.
"And have fun! Got it?" Ralph finished with a smile.
"Got it!" Vanello smiled before starting the engine and driving the kart away. Ralph laughed as he hung on tighter to the kart.
"Oh, wait!" Vanello exclaimed when he remembered something. He pressed the brakes, making the kart stop.
"Hold on!" Vanello jumped out of the kart and helped (Name) out, he grabbed her hand and ran back towards the mountain with her.
"Where you going?" Ralph asked.
"I forgot something! And I need (Name)'s help to find it! Be right back!" Vanello answered.
"Okay then." (Name) chuckled as they went through the door.
Ralph hopped off the kart and placed his hands on his hips. "Kids." He chuckled.
His smile faltered when he heard the sound of honking behind him. Ralph turned around and saw King Candy getting out of his kart.
"Ralph! There you are!" The king chuckled, taking his goggles off.
"YOU!" Ralph yelled.
"I come alone, unarmed." King Candy assured as he closed the door. He ducked when Ralph threw a gumdrop over his head.
"I've had enough of you, pillow plants!" Ralph fumed as he stormed towards the king.
King Candy immediately ran away behind a large red gumdrop. "Please! Calm down! Please, look! Don't!" He begged as he kept moving left and right from Ralph, hiding behind the gumdrop.
"I'm going to beat the filling out of you!" Ralph shouted as he tossed the large gumdrop away.
"AHA!" King Candy put on giant glasses. "You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses, would you?"
Ralph grabbed the glasses off his face and knocked King Candy on the head with them, the lenses shattering.
"OW! You hit a guy with glasses." King Candy spluttered for a moment. "That's...well played."
King Candy yelped when Ralph pulled him by the lapels, putting him close to his face.
"What do you want, Candy?" He growled.
"Listen, I just want to talk to you!" King Candy begged. "And (Name)! Where is she?"
"I ain't telling you that. Besides, she's not interested in anything you have to say. Neither am I."
"Okay, that's fine! But how about this? Would you be interested in this?" King Candy held up the medal.
"My medal!" Ralph gasped, dropping the king. "How did you..."
"It doesn't matter! It's yours! Take it!" King Candy chuckled.
Ralph hesitatingly took the medal, smiling at the feeling of the medal in his hands once again.
"All I ask is that you hear me out." King Candy pleaded.
Ralph raised an eyebrow. "About what?"
"Ralph, do you know what the hardest part about being a king is?" King Candy queried. "Doing what's right!"
"Get to the point."
"Point being, I need your help." King Candy admitted, clamping his hands together. "Sad as it is, Vanello cannot be allowed to race."
"WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE SO AGAINST HIM?!" Ralph yelled.
"I'm not against him! I'm trying to protect him!" King Candy deflected. "If Vanello wins that race..."
~🍬~
"He'll be added to the race roster."
Moppet looked at the daily avatars for Sugar Rush. She flicked through all of the racers until she stopped on Vanello.
"Then gamers can choose him as their avatar."
She pushed her foot on one of the pedals, choosing Vanello.
Vanello's avatar gasped and jumped up with a smile.
"And when they see him glitching and twitching and just being himself, they'll think our game is broken."
As Moppet played Sugar Rush, she got annoyed at how much Vanello was glitching.
She waved over Mr. Litwak, who looked at Vanello's glitchy state before slapping an 'Out of order' sign on the screen.
"We'll be put out of order for good."
Mr. Litwak pulled the plug for Sugar Rush as all of the subjects rushed into Game Central Station.
"All of my subjects will be homeless."
King Candy waved his hands for all of his subjects as they ran out of the plug. He looked back at the tunnel sadly as the last of them came out.
"But there's one, who cannot escape because he's a glitch."
"HELP! SOMEBODY HELP! HELP!" Vanello screamed as he banged on the barrier from the Sugar Rush entrance.
"And when the game's plug is pulled..."
Vanello was suddenly lifted in the air by a bunch of pixels.
"NOOOO!" He screamed as he was sucked into a colorful pixelated vortex.
~🍬~
"He'll die with it." King Candy sadly finished.
Ralph looked down in thought. "You don't know that will happen. The gamers could love him."
"And if they don't?"
Ralph went silent, he sat down on a gumdrop and sighed, staring at his medal.
"I know it's tough. But heroes have to make the tough choices, don't they?" King Candy confronted as he placed a hand on Ralph's larger hand.
"He can't race, Ralph, but he won't listen to me. So can I count on you to talk a little sense into him?" The king requested softly.
Ralph contemplated, he then gave a small, pained nod.
"Very good." King Candy nodded. "I'll give you three some time alone."
King Candy walked back to his kart, he gave Ralph a saddened look as he drove away.
Ralph walked over to Vanello's kart and looked down sadly at it. More specifically, the area where he had signed his name with Vanello and (Name).
He thought about (Name), and how heartbroken she would be if Vanello died.
He knew the two were catching feelings for each other, it was obvious for anyone to see.
This had been the happiest he had ever seen (Name), Vanello dying would bring her back into a world of misery like never before.
Ralph looked at the medal in his hand, he rubbed his thumb over it before clutching it with a firm look on his face.
He had to do this.
For Vanello.
For (Name).
~🍬~
A few minutes earlier...
"Vanello, what is this all about?" (Name) asked as Vanello dragged her over to his small house.
"I have something for Ralph, check this out!" Vanello answered as he reached behind his bed.
He pulled out a heart-shaped cookie attached to a pink ribbon coated in sugar. It had a chocolate surface which read 'To: Stinkbrain' in cursive writing. (Name) could immediately tell it was for Ralph.
Vanello then filled it over to show the other side of the cookie, which had turquoise frosting coated with white frosting around it. It was decorated with sprinkles and read 'You're my hero.'
"Aw, Vanello! It's lovely!" (Name) smiled. "Ralph is gonna love it!"
Vanello blushed and placed a hand behind his head. "Yeah, thanks. I made it as a backup medal in case we don't win."
He then put the medal in his pocket and went back to his bed. "I, uh...also have something for you..."
"Oh yeah?" (Name) asked with a smile.
"Yeah?" Vanello grabbed something behind his bed and presented it towards (Name).
She gasped when she saw what he was holding.
It was a necklace with a (favorite color) candy heart, a (gold/silver) string was attached to it. Carved on the heart in neat, cursive writing, was '(Name).'
"Oh, Vanello...in all my years, no one has ever done something like this for me before. (Name) gushed as Vanello placed it in her hands. "Thank you so much."
"Yeah, uh, you're welcome." Vanello smiled. "I made it as a thank you present for teaching me how to drive. But...turn it over."
(Name) did what he said and her heart soared when she saw what was written on it in carefully written cursive.
'Will you go out with me?'
(Name) looked at Vanello in shock, but the raven-hair was avoiding eye contact with her as he blushed a deep red.
"I-I mean, hey, I get it if you say no." Vanello began, a hand behind his head.
"Vanello-"
"I'm a glitch. Who would want to be with a glitch? Just-just forget I said anything-"
(Name) just wrapped her arms around Vanello and kissed his lips.
Vanello froze for a moment, before happily swinging his arms around (Name)'s waist and returning the kiss.
They stayed like that for a moment before they broke apart with big smiles on their faces.
"Been wanting to do that a while." (Name) smirked. "And of course I'll go out with you, you idiot."
Vanello smiled, he grabbed her by the waist and spun her around in the air. The two of them laughed together in glee before Vanello put her back on the ground gently.
"Oh! Also, I was thinking, since you don't have a game to go home to, maybe you could just stay here with me?" Vanello suggested.
"Wait, what?" (Name) asked.
"Yeah, I mean, I know it's kinda a stretch, but I also thought maybe you could become a racer." Vanello added as he fiddled with his hoodie strings.
"You're a natural born racer, the most amazing I've ever seen. I was thinking after I win the race, you can show everyone your skills, and King Candy will beg to have you as a racer!"
(Name) thought for a moment, while the idea of finally being a real racer after so many years excited her, the idea of being with Vanello excited her even more.
"Okay! Let's do it!" She grinned.
Vanello smiled in glee, excited at the thought of (Name) being a racer like him and the two of them living together.
"Well, c'mon, sweetheart! I got a race to win if we want any of that to happen!" He grabbed her by the hand and began to run with her.
"Hang on, give me a second." (Name) let go of his hand, she put the necklace on, the candy heart rested on her chest, the side with her name on it visible.
"Alright, now I'm ready." She grabbed Vanello's hand and dragged him towards the exit.
Vanello smiled at the feeling of her hand, he was truly on cloud nine at this point. Nothing could bring him down.
"By the way, do you really think I'm adorable?" He asked.
"Of course I do!" (Name) smiled.
~🍬~
"We're back! Did you miss us?" Vanello grinned as he and (Name) ran over to Ralph, hand in hand.
Ralph quickly hid the medal in his shirt. "Yeah...uh..." Ralph turned around to face the two teens and holed his hands together nervously. "Can we talk for a second?"
"Wait, first, kneel down." Vanello instructed, pointing his finger down.
"What? No, we really-" Ralph tried to say.
"Just do it." (Name) insisted, her hand on her hip.
Ralph let out a defeated sigh. "Okay." He got down on one knee.
"Now, close your eyes." Vanello batted his eyelashes.
"Vanello-"
"SHUSH! Close them!"
Ralph sighed and shut his eyes. Vanello pulled the necklace out from his pockets and placed it around Ralph's neck. "Okay, open them up!"
Ralph opened his eyes and looked at the cookie, which was turned to the chocolate side. "'To: Stinkbrain.' Gee, thanks." He said sarcastically.
"Turn it over." Vanello said with his hands behind his back.
Ralph did what he said, and his eyes softened when he saw the words 'You're my hero.'
"I made it for you!" Vanello smiled. "Just in case we don't win! Not that I think that there's a remote chance we're not gonna win."
Ralph glanced at the medal in sadness, knowing what he was about to do would make Vanello regret giving him this.
"Thanks, kid. Uh...Listen..."
"Now rise, my royal chump! I've got a date with destiny!" Vanello grinned as he skipped over to his kart. "Ralph, come on! Move your molasses."
"Ralph, everything okay?" (Name) asked gently, noticing the sorrowful look on his face.
"Um...I've been thinking." Ralph started as he stood up from the ground.
"That's dangerous." Vanello chuckled as he climbed into the driver's seat.
"Who cares about this stupid race anyway? Right?"
"That's not very funny, Ralph." Vanello half-laughed, sending a smug look to the large man.
"No, I'm serious, and it was really fun to build the kart and everything. But...maybe you shouldn't do it." Ralph explained.
"What are you talking about?" (Name) queried, getting a bad feeling about this.
"Uh, hello? Is Ralph in there? I'd like to speak to him please?" Vanello joked as he leaned on the spoiler.
"Look, what I'm saying is, you can't be a racer." Ralph finally admitted.
"What?" (Name) and Vanello said in sync, Vanello glitching softly.
"Why would you..."
(Name) then noticed a gold shine in Ralph's shirt. "Wait a minute..." She yanked it out, revealing the medal.
"No!" Ralph yelled, but it was too late.
"Where did you get this?" (Name) asked angrily.
"Look, I'm gonna be straight with you, kids. I've been talking to King Candy." Ralph admitted.
"King Candy?" Vanello gasped before glitching in shock.
"You sold us out?" (Name) said in disbelief.
"No! I didn't...Listen, you don't understand!" Ralph interjected.
"No, we understand plenty. Traitor." Vanello growled, grabbing the medal from (Name)'s hands and throwing it at Ralph, making him flinch.
"I'm not a traitor!"
"You're a rat!" (Name) shouted.
"And I don't need you!" Vanello sniffed, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "And I can win the race with (Name)." He sat in the driver's seat and started the engine as (Name) sat in the back, refusing to look at Ralph.
"But I'm trying to save your skin, kid!" Ralph urged as he grabbed Vanello's hood and picked him out of the kart.
"̶̰̠̇P̶͂̈́ͅů̴͈̻ṱ̸̳̑͘ ̸̪̀͠m̶̪̣̅e̶͖͒ ̸̳̦̿̈́d̵͙̏̑ö̸̱͐w̴̝͋̃n̷͗͝ͅ!̴̭̳̈͝ ̵̹̿̏L̵̦̒ë̵̯͚́t̸̛̫̥ ̵͚͎̀m̸̛̮͂e̶̖̋ ̵̭̉g̷̯̋͠ơ̴̲̥͂!̵͎̲̉͊"̸̘̋̚ ̵̦̰̋̄ Vanello shrieked as he thrashed around in Ralph's hold.
"Ralph! Put him down this instant!" (Name) yelled as she tried to get Vanello down. But Ralph just gently pushed her aside, not wanting to hurt her.
"No, you both listen to me! Do you know what's gonna happen when the players see you glitching?" Ralph questioned as he put Vanello down, blocking in his path as he glitched and tried to get past him.
"They're gonna think the game's broken!"
"I DON'T CARE, YOU'RE A LIAR!" Vanello shrieked as he tried to get to (Name).
"YOU DON'T KNOW THAT, RALPH!" (Name) shouted as she fought from behind Ralph, who kept shoving her away.
"No, you better care, because if your game goes out of order, you go down with the ship, little brother!" Ralph testified.
"GET OUT OF MY WAY!" Vanello screamed, he glitched in anger. "(Name) and I are going to that race!"
"No, you're not!" Ralph grabbed Vanello by the hood and placed it on the edge on a branch of a tall lollipop tree.
He then took (Name) by her leather jacket and attached her onto a branch as well.
"Take us down from here, Ralph! Right now!" (Name) demanded as she struggled on the branch.
"No! I'm doing this for your own good!" Ralph pointed a finger at the two teenagers. He went over to the kart and took a deep breath.
He looked down at his hands, he clenched his fists.
"Wait, wait, wait. No, no, no, no, no!" Vanello shrieked, realizing what he was about to do.
"RALPH, PLEASE!" (Name) screamed.
But Ralph didn't listen, he raised his fists above his head. He slammed his fists onto the kart.
"NO! STOP IT! STOP IT!" Vanello screeched as he watched Ralph smash his kart into pieces, each slam harder than the last.
"RALPH, STOP!" (Name) screamed as she continued thrashing around, her jacket beginning to rip from the movement.
When he was done, Ralph looked down sadly at his destruction. The kart was scattered pieces of wheels, pedals, and other parts.
Vanello sobbed, he glitched and landed on the ground on his knees and palms. (Name)'s jacket had finally ripped, she fell on the ground, not uttering a word.
Vanello glitched softly as he sobbed, before he looked up at Ralph with hot tears running down his cheeks. "You really are a bad guy."
Ralph looked down sadly, he watched as Vanello ran away to the mountain.
Ralph then looked down at (Name), who hadn't spoken a word.
"(Name)..." Ralph begun.
"You're just as bad as he was." (Name) whispered.
"What?"
(Name) just gave him a sad look before standing up and running away to the mountain.
Ralph sighed, he picked up his medal from the ground and walked down the road alone with a broken heart.
