Chapter One
To anyone I would've looked absolutely normal. I have a good life. Nice parents, good grades, great health. Everyone who knows me knows me as a good friend who would never put a toe out of line. I was the goody-two-shoes, the kid who always shined at everything. But that was what I wanted you to think.
On the inside I'm different. I'm really not a good person and I don't deserve what I had. I made a lot of money but the wrong way - especially for a fifteen year old. Other kids worked at an ice cream shop or a small burger joint. Me? I get rid of people.
I've been working for people who weren't exactly definition "nice". In fact they were the kind of people who did things that were the definition of "illegal". I've been helping them for over a year now and still didn't know a lot about them. But the pay was good and it was a fun job so why not?
Hiding it wasn't hard. Sneaking out at night was easy with parents like mine. Ignorant and too trusting of others. My brother knew I was sneaking out but never did anything about it. No biggie there since it was unlikely he'd ever tell. Thinking quickly was is good trait of mine and lying on the spot was never problematic.
I had everything I wanted until she showed up and they notified me.
I slammed my locker and turned around to keep talking to my friends. They had a few minutes before they needed to leave for lunch.
"Hey dude who's that?" a tall skinny kid that I wasn't great friends with asked. I turned around and almost yelled aloud. Even for people my age in the business would have known who it was. That was Julie O'Donnell. She was charged with twelve murders. That I knew about at least.
Julie O'Donnell was probably the worst person you could run into - ever. She was standing in the hallway talking to someone a little taller than her. I was still gawking when they turned and she pointed at me. They guy standing next to her was Louis, my older brother.
What was he doing with her? I scrambled to think of a logical explanation. The two started walking over towards me so I put on a cool face and said I'd catch up with my friends later.
"What's up little bro?" Louis greeted me. Louis was the absolute perfect older brother. Star football player who still did well in school can really help one out in P.E. Not to mention he was just a generally nice guy who was cool about letting me hang out with him. We looked very similar. He was tall but not drastically and had brown hair slightly darker shade than mine. But my eyes were blue instead of brown like his.
"Not much you?" I replied holding my fist up.
Louis bumped it and turned towards Julie. "This is Julie O'Donnell. She just moved in across from us." he introduced.
"Nice to meet you. I'm sure we will get to know each other a lot better Mark." she said with a smile.
"Uhh yeah." So much for quick thinking.
"You two get to know each other. Mom invited them over for dinner I'm Thursday and we wouldn't want it to be awkward now would we?" he grinned. A group a friends walked by and Louis trotted off with them. Well it was Wednesday so I had time to prepare for the devil's arrival.
Julie was average height and had bouncy black hair. Her eyes were gray and seemed to watch everything with ease which ironically caused me to feel uneasy. She was that kind of girls that most guys would want to be around. That was also ironic because she was a serial killer.
"Do you mind showing me the band room? I need to drop off my flute." she smiled holding up a small case. I knew she had planned it, but I showed her to the band room anyways. As soon as we were inside she shut the door. When she turned around she had lost her smile and was now intent and alert. And angry. She looked very angry.
"Okay so I guess you know who I am." I stated.
"Sure do," she said calmly. "So let me set some ground rules. Sit down."
I sat in a nearby plastic blue chair, not sure what was going to happen.
"You aren't telling anyone anything. Of course your employers know I'm here. I'll save you both the time and go ahead and tell you that you're supposed to kill me. Good luck with that." she pulled up a chair and sat in it backwards still facing me. "I'm not dealing with carefully worded conversations that drop hints about how you know me or any other bullshit for that matter." she continued.
I nodded.
She snorted. "I'm going to date your brother. Two reasons. Are you even smart enough to guess them?"
"One because it'll get you closer to my family and ultimately closer to me. And two..." I trailed off not wanting to finish my sentence.
"Keep going." she commanded.
I gulped but complied. "You'll kill him if I mess up."
Here's the odd thing about me. I care deeply for my family. But very little for other people. I've killed people just because I was told to - just for the money. Sometimes just for the heck of it too. But nothing was going to hurt my family. Those were two very different boundaries in my book.
"Damn right I will." she smirked.
"I'm going to beat you Julie." I don't even know why I said it, but I did.
Her eyes narrowed. She apparently took baiting very easily. "The last twelve didn't Mark." she cocked her head at me. "You know what each of their last words were?" she asked. When I didn't respond she continued. "They all begged me to end it. They begged me to stop to just leave them alone and kill them. It only take a few short hours for them to give me what I wanted and crack. And I'm a nice person so I do give them the mercy they would deserve after helping me. But I won't ever end it until they beg."
My stomach dropped and gulped again. If she was trying to scare me she sure was doing a good job of it.
She leaned forwards, her movement silent. "Trust me Mark. You'll be begging too."
