Chapter 1: The Beauty in Vain
Mangle Velasquez is a beauty. All of the students in the hallway could only stare at her as she walks by. But...they aren't looking at her because she is a pretty face. She is the academy's top 1 weirdo, according to a certain poll all of the students conducted on some kind of secret underground club hideout.
A beauty in vain.
Whispers were heard here and there, but Mangle couldn't care less. She walked directly to her classroom. She was used to the attention. And so, she did her usual routine - sit quietly on her seat and maybe try to poke her sharpened pencil on her fingers just to draw out blood. Or...maybe even use her cutter to try to wound the upper part of her legs when the teacher is not watching.
But...she actually had a friend. Bonbon Suarez. Well...she's not a weirdo. But, she seems to be connected to Mangle in some kind of way. She finds her interesting. And Bonbon wants to find out why she acts like this.
"I expect all of you to write an essay about anything you value or anything you could never live without and pass it tomorrow. Remember students, be creative. Those who cannot pass, will immediately get an F. Dismiss."
Mangle groaned and stood up from her seat. It was time to head to the cafeteria with Bonbon. She looked at her index finger and saw blood gushing out. She stared at it.
"Mangle!" She saw Bonbon's disapproving look. Her arms were crossed over her chest. "Did you try to bite your fingers again?"
Mangle shook her head from left to right. "I used a pin this time."
Bonbon could only stare at her in disbelief. "Let's get you to the clinic." She pulled her arm and lead the way. Mangle didn't struggle. "Seriously, you have to stop on those attempts."
"I...can't."
Bonbon sighed exasperatedly. "Shouldn't you go see a psychologist or something?"
"I did. About 13 times...and none of them could get rid of my...umm...habit." Mangle looked down.
"You really are a weirdo." Bonbon smiled. "But that's why you're my best friend"
Mangle felt her best friend stop walking. She looked up and saw the sign 'School Clinic'.
"Excuse me?" Bonbon called for the nurse.
They looked around and saw only one person.
"Is there a nurse around here?" Bonbon asked the guy.
"I'm the substitute nurse since she's out today. How may I help you?"
Mangle stared at those golden eyes that seemed to shine from the light. 'They're beautiful,' she thought. She stared and stared. Her attention was then directed to the boy's red hair.
"Umm..."
She felt Bonbon elbow her in the stomach lightly. She whispered "It's rude to stare, you know."
She shook her head and muttered a soft apology. The guy smiled and nodded.
"Umm...Foxy, Mangle here needs medical treatment. I hope you can treat her since I have a meeting to catch on with the student council." Bonbon slightly hesitated to leave Mangle. She knew who Foxy Clark was.
"Don't worry," Foxy told her, as if reading her mind.
"Thanks," Bonbon smiled slightly at Foxy then left the room.
"So, what's your injury?" Foxy gestured for her to sit on the chair.
Mangle didn't answer. She put her hand in front of his face, as if blocking a horrible view. Foxy forced a smile. Her first impression on the girl was that she was too shy but beautiful. But...there's no way Foxy wouldn't know who the school's top weirdo is. 'Mangle Velasquez...' This was his first time meeting her and this made him realize the rumors were true.
"What? You're going to stare at my injury to make it heal or something?"
Foxy was surprised to hear her voice. It was angelic...but her face stated the opposite. He knew her. But she probably didn't know him.
"Sorry." He wanted this over, fast. Seems like both of them didn't stand seeing each other anyway. He saw a big dot on Mangle's index finger. It looked small..but deep. If he had to say, it might actually be a lot of pain. 'Where did she get this injury?'
"Wondering where I got this? I pushed a pin inside it. Happy?"
Mangle was too...blunt. She had no sweet-coating for words. Foxy blinked. 'Yep, she's crazy.'
Foxy grabbed cotton balls from the nurse's table. He was about to get a betadine to reduce the pain, but Mangle stopped him.
"Use alcohol. A lot."
Foxy stared at her with wide eyes. "Are you serious?!"
"Completely. Also, don't be gentle with me. Dab the cotton balls as if you're going to murder my finger, okay?"
Foxy's jaw dropped but he immediately closed it. 'She isn't doing this to impress me, right? I mean...I am the school's hottest and most handsome guy, but there's no way a girl would go this far, right?'
Silly Foxy.
"Get on with it!" Mangle told him.
He went near her and poured some alcohol on the cotton balls, but he dabbed it on her finger as hard as he could do to a girl.
Mangle scowled and glared. "What are you doing?"
Foxy looked up. "Treating your finger?"
"You're being too gentle. Give me that." Foxy had no time to argue as Mangle poured all the contents of the alcohol on her finger. The table was flooding. She dabbed...no....she pushed the cotton balls on her index finger repeatedly.
Foxy was frozen. 'What.The.Heck.'
And just like that, Foxy decided to never interact with that girl ever again.
. . .
Mangle tapped her pen on a piece of paper on top of the table. 'What I value most? I value Bonbon...but...I have something much more greater.'
She looked down, as if hesitating to write. After a few minutes, she started to write about the things in her mind.
I...value pain. I wonder why people hate it, though. Isn't it just beautiful? If I wouldn't die, I would stab myself as many times as I could...just to experience pain. My goal is to achieve the best way to the most painful feeling in this world without dying. They say people who like pain are masochists. I love pain. Am I worst than a masochist? I really don't care. Pain is my friend. Pain is my ally. Pain tells me when I have been wounded badly. I hope my pain will last for eternity.
She smiled at her work before going to bed.
. . .
After 3 days...
One girl was standing on the railing on the schools rooftop. The students gathered underneath, whispers echoing.
Mangle put the megaphone near her mouth. She breathed in heavily with a second of silence...she shouted as loud as she can.
"CALLING THE ATTENTION OF FOXY BENJAMIN CALLISTER CLARK!!!"
Foxy looked up to the rooftop to find Mangle standing on the railings, without losing her balance. He stared with widened eyes. 'What the-'
"I, MANGLE VALENTINA THEODORA VELASQUEZ, AM HEREBY GIVING YOU THE HONOR TO DATE ME!!!!!!!"
"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
. . .
