Chapter Twelve

Evelyn Butler

It was always loud and crazy every single day in the Butler household. With a total of five, it was pretty difficult to tone this family out. With the boy's screaming and the parent's arguing, it was a miracle that nobody had filed a complaint to the manager of the apartment complex. If so, they haven't said anything to them.

"Alex took my toy!" the seven-year-old Daniel complained.

"Share with your brother, Alex!" one of them would say. It was usually Evelyn.

"I don't want to!" Alex complained. A small crash was heard shortly after.

Even though Daniel was the youngest, Alex usually acted more like the baby. The nine-year-old didn't even give much of a warning before he started pitching a fit if he didn't get his way. Alex always had the biggest attitude and it was often that somebody would have to spank him. Evelyn typically didn't have the heart to do that, so she let her parents do the punishment work.

She never really liked her mom that much. She was always overprotective over everything she did. Whether that was her grades, her friends, and especially any guy that entered her life. Evelyn and her mother weren't on good terms due to her chasing off a guy that the two teenagers had eyes out for.

"Hija, that boy is no good!" she argued to her. "So stay away I said!"

"Mamá!" Evelyn would argue back. "Give me some space every so often! You're always too involved in my life!"

Of course, she never meant that last part. Evelyn understood that she was just trying to hold her shirt in case something worse than heartbreak happened. The boys of Meridian were rebellious and dangerous, especially to prettier girls. Even so, she still wanted to find love, and her mother would always hold her back. Everything that her mother was too involved in usually ended in slammed doors and distant arguing.

Evelyn's father was a different story. He was never home half the time because he worked at a distant construction company that serviced all over the country. When he was home, though, it was never good. They would fight over the w
smallest things which would sometimes lead to the dad using violent actions. When that would happen, Evelyn would take the two boys and brush them into their shared bedroom away from the fighting. To make matters worse, Evelyn had unintentionally found inappropriate messages on her father's phone that did not belong to her mother. She always wondered if he was actually working or not.

At the time, he was home on a break from a job in Colorado. Her father, even over all of the yelling, ignored everyone and continued to slowly turn the volume up on the TV as we got louder and louder.

Her mind glitched out.

"Sister?" a voice called out to Evelyn. She turned around and found Daniel looking up at her.

Evelyn rubbed her eyes to get her bearings. "H-Huh? What is it?"

Before he could answer, Evelyn caught something out of the corner of her eyes. She walked over to the window and looked outside.

The buildings were still standing, but the outside world was under its feet. Zombies littered the city and blood was pouring out from all over the place. Evelyn stumbled backward away from the window, completely shocked at what she saw.

Somebody caught her, and it was her mother. "E-Evelyn, what's the matter?"

She was panting heavily. "W-Wh-What's going on out there?"

Her mother sighed and turned her around. "You forgot to take your medicine today, didn't you?"

"What medicine...?"

The mom smiled sadly. "Let's go fix that before you break anything else."

Hours passed into the night, and the house finally decided to settle down for the night. Alex and Daniel were put to bed, and Evelyn was on her way too when she paused in the walkway to the bathroom. Abruptly turning around, she took another look out of the window. Lights twere flashing and distant gunshots were heard.

A firm hand gripped her shoulder and wheeled her around. It was her father. "Go to bed, now. It's not safe for you to be near the windows."

"But, I wanna-"

Her father's glare increased as she dared to argue against his wishes. "Y-Yes, sir."

"Good. I love you, Evelyn."

"I-I love you too, papá," she replied.

As he walked back towards the living room, Evelyn took one last look outside. It was darker than it has been in a long time, but the flashing lights seemed slightly closer. Shrugging it off, she closed the curtains and closed the door to her room, laying her head against the soft pillow.

She found herself asleep faster than she thought.

——————————

A loud boom gently shook the window. It startled Evelyn, who shot up in the bed quicker than a rocket. Her breaths were already quick and articulated. "What was that?" she wondered aloud.

Slowly climbing out of the bed, Evelyn cautiously made her way towards the window. As she opened it, another crack made her stumble backward. Evelyn gave it a second before she had a chance to investigate the source of the violent sounds.

As soon as Evelyn gasped, her bedroom door was flung open. Her mother, who was holding both of the boys, was talking so quickly in Spanish that Evelyn hardly had time to process what was happening. They ran towards the master bedroom, but Evelyn hesitated as the front door was kicked open.

Bullets were sprayed, horrible words were shouted and orders were commanded. She dove out of the way and scrambled to the cramped coat closet, praying that nobody had seen her do it. She waited in the closet for what seemed like forever. Her mother's screaming stopped, and her brother's wailing ended as soon as it started. Evelyn, of course, had a feeling that she knew what really happened, but she refused to believe it until she saw it.

It was over before it hardly started.

The shouting of the invaders stopped, so she slowly stood up. Evelyn put her ear to the door to double-check that they were gone. Hearing nothing, she gently twisted the doorknob and slowly pushed the door open. Evelyn peered outside, and the apartments seemed like it hasn't even been touched, besides the bullet holes in the floor.

"Mamá?" she called out. "Papá?"

She walked into the master bedroom, calling out for the names of her siblings. "Alex? Daniel?"

Then it happened. The four men dressed in military uniforms stepped out from the bathroom and aimed their guns straight at her.

"If you move, we might spare that pretty little face of yours," the guy in the front said. "And if you cooperate, you'd come with us and do everything we tell you to do."

Truth be told, she never really had a choice to begin with. The men gripped her by the arms and began to drag her away from the bedroom. She screamed and kicked and bucked as much as she could, but it deemed useless compared to the strength of the men.

The next thing she knew, she was tied up with a rope, her arms and legs spread out without consent. Tears were streaming down her face as she feared for the worst. The leader then proceeded to touch her body, biting his lip. His hands groped her thighs, slowly making his way upwards.

"How old are you, sweetheart?" he asked seductively, with a British accent. Evelyn didn't respond, due to the rope being stuck in her mouth. "Ah, that's right. Let's fix that for a second."

The leader ripped the rope from her mouth. Evelyn gasped and instantly took deep breaths. "Now, sweetheart, how old are you?"

Evelyn looked at him, still unresponsive. She only stared at him, silently defying his question. He smiled. "No matter. Nobody will know about this, right?"

With that, he proceeded to touch more inappropriate areas of her body. Evelyn began to helplessly cry as he did so. He certainly had his way with her, even with all of the resisting she did. Every time she resisted, it would get her slapped, punched, or beaten.

After what seemed like forever of torture, Evelyn found herself on the side of the road. Blood was pouring down her face, neck, and arms. Her shirt was ripped and exposing basically everything. Her head was faded and her memory seemed broken.

Without much of an option, she walked until two people found her in the middle of nowhere. She didn't even resist. She was tired of everything at that point. Evelyn waited for them to harass her more, but it never came.

Joshua and Bethany Washington saved her life.
