I yawned and stretched my arms, actually getting some sleep that night. Braxton and Olivia were still passed out in the bed beside me. Quietly, I nudged her awake.
"Mm, is it time for school momma?" She mumbled.
I chuckled. "No, it's your annoying big brother telling you to get up in the nicest way possible."
She opened her eyes and looked at me. Then she narrowed her eyes and glanced at Braxton, relaxing after she saw him. I had a feeling she was going to attack me if he wasn't there.
I pulled her out of the bed and decided to let Braxton sleep in, since he needed it desperately. If anyone, he was probably the one most affected by all of this outbreak crap.
As we were waking down the hall, Olivia asked me a question. "What's on the schedule today?"
"Um, if I had to guess, we're probably going to leave and head to Tallahassee to get to the airport. Why?"
"Oh, just curious. That's all." She said.
I just shrugged my shoulders and kept walking, meeting the adults over a cup of coffee and a radio, no longer on an EAS, thank God.
"Anything new come up?" I asked, trying to spark a conversation.
John shook his head. "No, unfortunately not. Still some shit about the airlift to Tallahassee."
Candice nudged him and nodded to Olivia, who didn't really seem to care that much, as expected.
"Is Brax still asleep?" Mom asked me, taking a sip of her coffee.
"Yeah, want me to get him up?"
Mom seemed surprised hearing my answer. "Um, sure. Wake him up softly so he'll be in a good mood."
I chuckled and began to make my way back down the hallway.
Braxton was weird that way. If you jumped on him like I used to do, he'd always be in a bad mood the entire day. If you woke him up like I did Olivia, he'd be fine.
Six year olds are weird man.
I woke him up the same way I did with my sister. "Hey little bubba. Time to get up."
Braxton tolled over and fluttered his eyes to wake himself up. "Is that you Jesus?"
I held back a laugh. "No, it's not Jesus, just like the last time. Now get up, we have to go soon."
He sighed and sat up in the bed, recognizing me. "Oh hi Jeremy."
Then he climbed out of the bed and walked straight to the kitchen. I rolled my eyes and smiled, following him.

John eventually kicked us out of the house, but not in a mean way of course. Candice on the other hand, actually had other ideas.
"John, I know this may be pretty sudden, but why don't we go with them, so we can be safe as well?"
He thought about it for a while, but he was interrupted by a scream coming from far away.
"Um, what was that?" Olivia asked, getting nervous.
Dad sniffed the air in a strange way, then his eyes got wide. "Zombies. A herd of them. John, we need an answer now."
He looked at Candice, who nodded. "Alright. We're coming. Do you have room for two more?"
"Yes. Grab any weapons you have on you. Knives and everything. Let's go."
About thirty seconds later, the two of them came bursting out of the house and climbed in the truck with us. Dad put the truck in gear and sped off north. I didn't tell anybody this, but I got a good view of the zombies that were chasing us...
...and some of them had faces that looked like mushrooms were growing on them.
————————
It was a solid drive to Blountstown without any problems, but Dad said that we were going to have to get gas pretty soon.
We pulled over at a gas station that's always been pretty run down. I've been through here off and on for family reasons.
Dad took it casually and began to fuel up.
Then I heard a spray of gunshots ring out, and it sounded pretty close, so I began to get anxious.
"Any idea on where that could've been?" John asked nobody in particular.
"No clue." Candice said.
Then we heard laughing, so I looked over across the street, and what I saw was absolutely mortifying.
A man who looked around his late twenties was getting beaten to the ground. Once he was on the ground, they demanded all of his things, which he refused. They pointed a revolver at him and gave him once last chance, which he gave in. They took all of his things, then shot him anyways.
Then they looked this direction, and one of the guys pointed our direction.
"William!" Mom screamed.
"I'm on it!" He yelled back.
One of the guys pulled out a shotgun and fired our direction. Dad punched the gas while John pulled out a hunting rifle and popped in a bullet.
Another shotgun bullet was fired, and it hit one of the back wheels, which sent Dad off of the road.
The guys laughed and drove their motorcycles over to us.
John and Dad immediately jumped out of the truck and pointed their guns at them, while we stayed as hidden as possible inside the truck. I kept Olivia and Braxton's heads down, but I peeked out of the window.
"We know you have some women in there, don't ya? If you lie, your head will be ours." The leader said as he pulled out some sort of a combat blade.
"Yes. What do you want from us?" John asked.
The black leader stepped up and got right in his face. "Isn't it f*cking obvious? We want your wives, girlfriends, whatever it is to you bastards. Now hand them over, or you're all getting killed on the spot."
John flashed a secretive wink over to Dad, as he nodded. Dad looked a little confused, but also scared, so he nodded back.
"Fine, but we want a trade off of it. You gotta give us the shotgun with ammo, and one of your motorcycles with it."
"No f*cking-"
"Wait, sir!" Another guy said.
"I see a little girl in there! That's a bonus!"
And that's when everything took a dark and twisted turn.
