Chapter Five

It's Time to Take Action

Class Two Outbreak: June 17th at 6:36am

Current Location: Panama City, FL

----------------------------------------------------

Is it just me, or is anyone else terrified of EAS's? Ugh, I just hate that alarm. Scares the living crap out of me.

Well, it happened in the morning, and I accidentally threw Olivia off of the bed. She wasn't very happy that morning.

"This is an urgent message from the president of the United States of America. The class one apocalypse has recently been updated to a class two apocalypse. A class two apocalypse means that the zombies have now travelled across state borders and residents in the radius of 100-150 miles of Tallahassee, Florida should now evacuate to Tallahassee International Airport to be airlifted to Washington, District of Columbia for safety. Please be safe and arrive here as quickly as possible. ,You have five days to arrive. If the outbreak advances to class four, we will be forced to use bombs for safety. God bless."

"Daddy, what does that mean? Are we gonna be okay?" Braxton asked after Dad turned down the radio to quiet the endless loop.

"Yes son, we'll be okay." He said.

Braxton went surprisingly quiet after he said that. I would've guessed he'd ask more questions, but he never did.

"Are we in the radius?" I asked curiously.

Mom looked at dad for an answer. "I don't think so. If I remember right, we should be well over it. Close to 200 miles I believe."

"Should we still evacuate? I mean the zombies are here too." Olivia asked.

Even though most people judge her for her age, Olivia could be pretty smart sometimes. She didn't want to admit it, and I loved to tease her about it.

"I'm not sure. We'll see pretty soon." Dad said.

I could tell Dad was trying to avoid answering the question for some reason. If I had to guess, he was too scared to. I didn't blame him for it.

---------------------------

Finally, the time came to take action later that day. Dad said if they are beginning to cross borders, we might as well be prepared to do the same.

"I think we should take the quietest vehicle possible. We don't want to fight more than we have to." Dad said.

"Agreed. Let's take the Jeep." Mom suggested.

"What about weapons?" Olivia asked, again with her intelligence. Nobody had an answer, but a thought came to mind.

Chance. I wanted to check on him and his kids to make sure they survived the night.

As we all started to pack up and leave, I got the guts to ask the question. "Hey dad?"

Dad stopped packing his bag of clothes and looked at me. "What is it?"

I took a deep breath. "Um, before we leave, can we go see somebody to make sure they're okay?"

He furrowed his eyebrows in question. "Of course. Who is it?"

"It's Chance and his kids. I just want to make sure they're okay."

"The guy with the boy you played basketball with?" He asked.

"Y-Yeah..." I mumbled.

He smirked. "Sure. Once we leave we'll take a stop there."

I nodded and smiled in appreciation. "Thanks."

With that, I went to my room to pack the few things I figured I'd need. I wasn't really a guy that takes a lot of things on vacation, but I realised later that this definitely wasn't a vacation. This was to survive.

"Jeremy?"

Braxton's tiny voice startled me. "Yes?"

He shuffled his feet in the way little kids do when they're going to get in trouble or they want something that they know they're not gonna get it.
"Are we going to die?"

I sighed and looked in his dark chocolate eyes. "Brax, with our protection, absolutely not."

He gave me a small smile, but it was a fearful one. "O-Okay..."

I walked up to him and patted his head. "It'll be alright. Hurry, go get mom to help you pack your things."

I gave him a small push back towards his room. I then sighed and resumed packing.

Once I was satisfied with all of my things, which again wasn't much, I went to go check on Braxton and mom.

"All ready honey?" Mom asked.

"I think so." I said, quietly watching Braxton as he tried to pick which toy to take.

"Hurry up sweetie. We need to go." Mom told Brax.

Dad and Olivia came stumbling in to see if we were still in the house.

"All ready to go? I just got word that another swarm of zombies are headed this direction. They'll be here in under an hour." Dad explained.

Mom nodded. "Alright. We should be ready in about five minutes. I need to find Braxton's extra socks in the laundry room."

She got up and walked down the hallway to grab his socks and came back quickly. She stuffed them in his bag and zipped it up.

"Let's go." She said.

With that, we walked out of the house and into the cloudy, gray sky. It definitely felt ominous.

I took one last look at the house, and I knew right then it would be the last time I ever laid eyes on it.

"It's a two hour trip to the airport in Tallahassee, and I will need to stop about halfway to get gas. Sound like a plan?" Dad asked mom.

"Sure. That's gonna be around Blountstown or Bristol right?" Mom asked.

Dad picked up his phone to check. "Uh, yeah that's about right."

Dad switched lanes, avoiding another broken town car. He scratched his head. He does that when he gets confused or his anxiety is beginning to rise. At this point, it's probably both. Which isn't good.

We drove smoothly for a good 45 minutes, entering a town just west of Blountstown, until dad was forced to slam on the brakes.

He cursed loudly out of sudden fear, which scared everybody in the car.

What we ran into was almost a death sentence. A huge swarm of zombies stood before us, and there was no turning back.
