Chapter 12: ChGK Worlds

The ChGK Worlds is the world championship of competitive ChGK. It was held yearly since 2002, with 2 interruptions: 2009 because of the Great Recession, and since 2020, first because of COVID, and later after the war in Ukraine started, the IAMG tied the hosting of future editions of the ChGK Worlds to the end of the war.

However, for future editions of the ChGK Worlds, the minimum number of teams in the field is 50. Teams can qualify by 4 ways: winning a national championship (with a maximum of two non-residents of the country), winning a major international tournament with the status of ChGK Worlds qualifier, achieving a certain rank in MAII rating or by being a wildcard of the organizing committee.

ChGK Worlds qualifiers are required to have at least 45 questions, must be held at least 67 days prior to the Worlds, cannot reuse the same packets as other qualifiers, and carry certain requirements on the compositions of the playing fields. In addition, the top 3 ranks must be occupied by only one team each.

Organizers of Worlds qualifiers must publish tournament information, as well as notify the IAMG, at least 30 days before the tournament. In addition, the organizers must pay the sanctioning fees to the IAMG no later than 14 days after the end of the tournament.

For a national championship to qualify for ChGK Worlds, the tournament must feature at least 5 teams from the country in which they are held. Teams qualifying as national champions must have no more than 2 players not residing in it.

For other leading tournaments to be eligible for ChGK Worlds qualifier status, the minimum number of teams required is in the table below. "X from the top Y" is understood to mean a tournament needs X entries among the top Y teams by MAII rating as of the starting date of the tournament.

Should a winner of either kind of tournament becomes unable to participate for whatever reason, the berth then goes to the second-place team. If the second-place team then refuses, it goes to the third-place team, and, if the third-place team refuses, the berth then "burns out".

Wildcard entries can be awarded by the organizers, up to a maximum of 5, and, in practice, they are used mostly for champions of countries new to ChGK.

Finally, the number of top teams by MAII rating not winning a qualifying tournament or winning a wildcard entry and not declining a berth is the R number. The R number must be published no later than 90 days before the Worlds:

R = B - (Q+W)

Where B is the total number of berths at the tournament, Q is the number of qualifiers and W is the number of wildcards. To determine these teams, the MAII ratings as of 60 days before the Worlds are used.

Once qualified, teams have up to 30 days before the start of the championship to either confirm or refuse a berth. Should a team refuse a berth, teams are offered berths in their waitlist order. In the last 2 weeks prior to the tournament, the organizing committee can take teams off the waitlist however it wishes and ignore the waitlist ordering.

Teams may refuse to be considered for ChGK Worlds after entering a qualifying tournament and may do so until 60 days before the Worlds.

For teams qualifying via tournaments, the qualifying squad (or QS) is simply the roster at that tournament. For teams qualifying by MAII rating, the QS is the roster between the date of entry in force of the regulations and 60 days before the start of the Worlds.

A player can be on the QS of at most 1 team that qualified for the Worlds. If a player qualified for more than one team, the team who qualified earliest will qualify. For the purposes of chronological ordering of tournaments, the rating is considered earlier than all actual tournaments.

If a team, however, plays in several qualifiers with different rosters, the team can then choose which roster to play with no later than 60 days before the Worlds. In the event such a team fails to make a choice, the choice shall be made by the organizing committee in accordance to the roster at the earliest tournament at which the team qualified for the Worlds.

Upon confirming its registration at the Worlds, a team must submit its roster for the Worlds. There can be no more than 9 players total, of which no more than 2 players not on the qualifying roster can be included. Furthermore, a player cannot be on more than one roster.

If a team is selected for the Championship based on the results of a national championship, no more than 2 players can be non-residents of that country.

Also, if a player objects to their inclusion on the roster, or is otherwise unable to attend, a player must notify the IAMG no later than 3 days after the publication of the entries. In this case, the organizing committee excludes the player from the entry list.

Finally, the actual roster for a team at the Worlds cannot include players not on its registration roster.
