Chapter 19 (Part 3)
Drake nearly choked on his tea. He turned away and spat out the sweet drink, making sure it didn't stain his clothes. As he coughed, Collin smiled sheepishly while the hybrid wiped the liquid that dribbled from the side of his mouth.
"Ah geez, sorry I keep inviting you when something big is going on." The angel laughs lightly. "Your visits haven't brought much good, I really should plan for a nicer time."
He nommed on another piece of cake, watching as Drake's grip on the note tightened slightly.
"This..." The mage looks back at Collin, finding it hard to believe that his guardian could've obtained such important information so easily. "How the hell did you get this?!"
The angel put a finger up, silencing Drake as he swallowed his piece of cake.
"I told you, a friend gave it to me!" Collin said, matter-of-factly, looking down at his cake with a smile. "Someone closely connected to this bet."
Drake scoffs, giving a strange look. "You sure have some pretty powerful friends. Can I open this?"
"Go ahead, I called you over to read it afterall."
With that reply, the mage neatly opened the note and reads quietly. Collin eats patiently, listening to his successor's thoughts. Three places were specifically named, two he didn't recognize: The Orcs Cave, The Jungle's Challenge, and...
"The Magic Library?!!" Drake exclaims in an incredulous tone.
Now it was Collin's turn to be surprised, that last thought echoing loudly. He nearly dropped his plate of cake before finishing it.
"I- uh, yeah! What about it?" He asked curiously.
The hybrid has a strange look on his face. "Collin, that old relic of knowledge gushed out a surge of magic and burned to a crisp."
Collin ate another piece of his apple cake before answering. "And?"
"'And?' There's no way that library survived an explosion like that!" Drake yells, making the poor guardian wince a little. "Ah, sorry."
The guardian angel shook his head in response. "It's still alive, Drake."
Seeing his successor's confused face, Collin quickly ran a finger around the surface of his empty plate and licked the last of it's frosting. Then, he stood up and head to the kitchen counter, gesturing Drake to follow.
"There's a reason that place is called The Magic Library." Collin started, putting his plate into the pantry.
He closes it for a small moment, before opening it again, happy that the plate is no where to be seen. Drake sits by the counter, ready to listen to his guardian.
"It's the source of a near-unlimited amount of supernatural energy. It practically illuminates magic, enough to open dimensional rifts. Enough to provide a certain demon another chance at life." Collin continues, his voice taking an edge near the end of his sentence as he grips the counter.
The hybrid's ender ear perked at these words, beginning to understand what his angel's trying to say.
"Wait- are you telling me that Herobrine and The Magic Library are connected?"
Collin's grip seems to tighten, his knuckles significantly white. Despite this, the guardian holds a weary smile. "Ding ding ding, Drake. Though, since you're so smart, I'd have assumed that was already obvious."
That tone seemed to have caught him in surprise, as Collin slaps a hand to his mouth in embarassment. "A-Ah, sorry about that."
"It's... okay?" The mage assures, giving an awkward, polite smile.
But, was that... sarcasm?
Shaking his head, the angel takes a moment to collect his thoughts. For a moment, he... wasn't himself.
"I-In any case, yeah. You're right, Herobrine and the library are connected." Collin continues, keeping his eyes down on the counter. "With a source of magic like that, it's not surprising Hero would take an excessive amount to keep himself alive."
"I was a surprise to him, though."
"Huh? What do you mean by that?" Drake asks, crossing his arms atop the counter.
"I guess you could say I was an.. error. A mistake he couldn't fix." In an instant, the hybrid felt worried.
Unlike that strange, sarcastic tone his voice tool moments ago, this sounded different. It was a tone he'd heard in Grayson's voice when he talked about his old life when he had a family, and a tone when Mia talked partially about her slavery in the Empire.
It was sad, almost regretful. Did he not want to come back to life? Well, it's not really life if he's just trapped in Drake's head but still.
"He tried to lock me up away, in a place he thought you wouldn't find me." His voice is starting to get shaky, hands clasped into fists. "He wasn't wrong though. You never found me in Hell."
He's still looking down, breathing heavily and it almost sounds like he's hyperventilating.
Drake quickly gets up from his chair, his heart racing to find a way to help him, when Collin weakly raises a hand. Usually a sign to shut up, Drake took it as a sign to calm the fuck down. The angel slowed his breathing, eyes closed as he quietly counted.
Drake counted to five when Collin breathes out, in, out, so on and so forth at the same pace. Soon he was calm enough to talk again, opening his eyes.
He laughs nervously, running a hand into his dark locks. "Aha, how embarassing. I'm sorry about that, Drake."
The hybrid stares at him, worried. "Okay, that didn't seem good. What's wrong, Collin?"
"It's nothing. I swear, i'll be fine." The angel tries, but Drake's not having it.
"No, it's clearly not 'fine'. You can't bullshit me, Collin."
"Drop it, please Drake." Collin pleads, really wanting the conversation to get back on topic.
He blinked a couple times, trying to clear the white blindness in his eyes. The guardian felt his body shaking again, but this time the boiling feeling in his stomach wasn't overwhelming sadness.
It was anger.
Drake hadn't noticed, he wasn't about to drop his worries for the angel. He wanted to know what was going on with the older male, and how he could help him. He didn't noticed that he was about to provoke something in the angel.
"You were hyperventilating a few seconds ago, and before that I saw you crying upsta–"
Suddenly, an apple whooshed passed the hybrid's head. It hit the far wall behind him, making a cracking noise as the fruit dented it. The apple then fell on the floor, looking perfectly fine.
Looking back at his guardian, Drake hushed when he saw Collin glaring at him heavily. He finally noticed the ghostly-white glow his angel's eyes posessed and felt a cold shiver run down his spine.
"I said drop it." Collin growled.
For a moment Drake thought 'This is where I die', before an exclaim of pain came from the guardian. The angel put both his hands on his head, growling angrily. It was almost like he was fighting himself.
"Shit... stop it.. Damnit!" He slammed a fist on the counter and the whole mirage exploded into white dust.
"Whoa-!" The hybrid fell onto the white surface, but he didn't keep his eyes off the guardian angel.
At this point, Collin was a complete mess. His eyes kept flickering white, like a broken flashlight, and he gripped harshly to his hair. Weakly, the angel looked at him. Worry, fear, and panic, all plastered on the mage's face. He shouldn't be seeing Collin like this, Collin didn't want him to.
He had to leave.
"I gotta.." The guardian raised a hand.
Drake could only stare in fear as his angel came closer, hand coming down to his face.
Snap!
And with a snap of his fingers, Drake was gone.
