The Worth of Poetry
Okay! So this is not going to be poetry per se but it's about it, something that's been bugging me since yesterday. You're really welcome to leave anytime soon.
"You're writing poetry? Big deal! Even a child can write something gibberish and make it poetry!"
After attending the Poetry Competition I realised, how poetry is undermined, and seen as nothing. Why is it so?
That child they are talking about would write something, but will they know to rhyme (rhyming isn't important though, but let's go with the flow), even if they did, will it make sense? Do they know the meaning of flow, consistency and feelings? Will their words touch anyone's heart? Will people really understand what the child mean? The biggest question will be 'Will the child write something for a cause?' Since as per the history, it's seen that most of the poetry is written for a cause. Even the music, song lyrics comes from poetry, but still it isn't appreciated, but the music is.
I was so pissed when the friend who won first place in the competition said she will hide her trophy because her family will make fun of her, and she wasn't kidding. I don't see the connection. What's there to make fun of, if you won something in poetry? You wrote something that was felt by others, understood and got rewarded for it, where is the 'making fun' part? I feel like going to her family and asking them to write a piece of poetry in front of me if it's that easy. The efforts she took, the brainstorming, the strong emotions, everything going down the drain, because people doesn't understand something, I really hate that part!
Poetry is an art, a way to give your message that can be felt by everyone. It's a way to express yourself without really expressing. It takes hardwork, intelligence, knowledge, emotions, and technicality. It's the magic in which you express something, and different people perceive it differently. The meaning is left to imagination. That's the beauty of poetry.
So why can't people understand a talent when they see one? Why do talented people still hide their poetry, embarassed to accept that they write one, as though writing poetry is a crime!
Why do people only appreciate and give worth to something that can be done practically and paid for? Is poetry under-appreciated, just because it's writing?
If writing was that easy then everyone would have gotten a perfect score in English or literature. I always struggled in English when trying to understand poetry, the poets use words that was never heard of and needed a professor to explain, but once I did understand, I loved it and admired how amazingly the piece was written. I always wished I could write something but we never had any encouragement for poetry. The only thing we could do was read poetry available in our literature and admire the beauty of it, even if you wouldn't understand it. I didn't know I could write something even close to poetry until I reached university and met a friend of mine who was in another campus before. That shows how it isn't even appreciated in the school itself, what can we expect of others. 😑😑😑
Also, just because some people doesn't understand something, they don't get the right to judge it. For instance, I hate politics but I know it's important as I have learned about it, the only bad part is the misuse of power, so it becomes important. I don't seem to get why it is important but I don't judge it, I just don't like it.
In conclusion, I would like to show the importance of poetry with the statement, "You can know/understand more about a topic by reading a poetry about it, than you would know/understand, by reading a whole book!"
Thank you for reading! Take care. ❤❤❤
