10 I Feel Pretty

Heh. Let's talk about clothes... Or lack there of. Some readers are gonna hang on your every word as you spout off the perfect outfit. Some just aren't into that crap and skip over that stuff.

Unless you are mentioning a band I like when describing his tshirt, I don't get the fascination. I check for cleanliness mostly when I reach for clothes. I barely notice when stuff matches, and usually rely on my shopping helper to get me clothes that all go together so I don't have to think too much.

Unless it's my kink stuff, but that's for another chapter. 😘

This is yet another personality trait you are building in your story. It helps define your character. If he is vain then a painstakingly detailed dressing scene with fussiness is great. If he is a slob then rush it and leave out a bunch.

Regardless though, a man's wardrobe says a lot about him according to society. Here are some stereotypes:
Business men wear suits, so familiarise yourself with the pieces and types for different levels. The sports jacket, two piece, three piece and tuxedos.

Jocks will probably wear athletic names such as Nike, Adidas, Puma, Asics, etc. One who follows a particular team will probably have jerseys and logo outer wear. Sweat pants, tear aways, or parts of old uniforms can add to the feel. Hoodies are a must.

Preps wear the casual working man wardrobe. This includes polo shirts, button down dress shirts, jumpers, cardigans, khakis and dress pants/shorts.

Then fringes wear all sorts of other things. The rocker with his band tshirts and jeans or leather pants. The hippie with his cotton v neck tshirt and linen boho pants, maybe a nice multi coloured vest or poncho. Throw in ethnic clothing sometimes, because let's face it the world is shrinking with the power of social media.

This is one area I feel like you can either go totally cliche OR make them a fantastic wolf in sheep's clothing! What if... What if the super goth bro is actually a sports nut in the secret realm of his home? What if the nerdy guy is actually a hardcore Metallica groupie on weekends?

How fun is that? I can just picture the shock on poor Jock's face when he runs into the Mathelete in leather pants, stacked bracelets, silver chains and a band tee on the train. You know he gonna check that tight arse out, right?

This is yet again an underrated plot tool gone to waste or just not done right in many of the stories I have read here on Watty. For instance, I once skipped an entire chapter of a story because when I skimmed it... The whole thing was paragraph after paragraph of the characters' clothing.

Yawn.

No thanks.

Unless the dude is checking another guy out, showing particular character traits, fussing with himself due to the first two, or buying himself clothes... This is boring and unnecessary.

I mean by all means if it is your passion to do this, then go riiiight ahead. Imma be passed out mentally til you git on wit it.
