Chapter Four
Please still be there, please still be there, Peter thought as he ran through the mall parking lot and into the mall. It was 11:30. He was supposed to meet MJ in the food court half an hour ago. Why'd it have to take so long to get changed and bandaged up? He was so dead.
He looked around as he arrived in the food court. At first, he didn't see her and was ready to go home and cry. Then, he saw a figure stand up from one of the tables.
"MJ," Peter muttered as he recognized her face. A nearly let out a cheer but the cheer crawled back down to his gut when he saw her walking towards the exit.
"MJ!" Peter called. "I'm here! Don't leave!"
MJ turned to face Peter and seemed to have a faint smile on her face. That is, before it quickly turned into a scowl.
And that's when Peter began writing out his will.
Not saying word, she continued to walk.
Peter cursed under his breath and rushed after her. "MJ wait!" He followed her right outside the door when he grabbed her arm and stopped her.
"What is your problem, Peter?!" She immediately asked after Peter pulled her aside. "You said we'd meet at 11. I got here then. I waited. And waited. And now you show up? Couldn't you have texted me or something?"
"I'm sorry MJ," Peter said with a sigh. "Something came up."
"Something is always coming up! Every time we try to meet up, something has come up. If you don't want to meet up, Peter, why don't you just tell me instead of showing up half an hour late or not showing up at all every time?"
"It's not like that!" Peter promised, hurt that she'd think that. "I do want to hang out with you."
He wanted to tell her why. Why he was late all the time, why he was always busy - everything. But he couldn't. Even if he could, he didn't know how he'd do so.
MJ shook her head. "Then maybe actually show up once and a while." She shoved him away by the shoulder. Specifically, his stabbed and now poorly bandaged up shoulder.
He winced and rested a hand on it gently. MJ eyed it and raised an eyebrow before looking away.
"Look, Peter. Forget it. I'll see you on Wednesday," she said, walking past him.
Peter furrowed his eyebrows and turned to face her as she walked away. "What do you mean? What's happening on Wednesday?"
MJ shook her head. "Honestly, Peter, how do get through the week? Your memory is the worst," She muttered. "The Academic Decathlon reunion thing, remember? Me, Ned, and our other team members are going be there."
Peter had completely forgot about it. How could he? Him, Ned and MJ had talked about it for a while, whining about Flash being there, the activities, all that.
They were going to be staying two nights at some mystery location. Oooh. They had guessed together where it would be, setting up a bet. Ned got twenty dollars if it was less than half an hour away from the school.
"MJ, I'm sorry," he repeated. "Please, can't we still shop around? Catch a movie?"
MJ hesitated before shaking her head. "I'm sorry, Peter. Show up on time next time and I'll consider it."
Peter was crestfallen. He nodded slowly and walked back inside the mall, muttering a goodbye as they went their separate ways.
What. A. Waste.
He had blown it. He had missed his chance because of a 'mission' that accomplished nothing. If he had just forgotten about it and not gone, then he would be seeing a movie with MJ and not be making his way over to Hot Topic. Well, maybe he would, but he would have been with MJ.
He made his way inside the store and was immediately greeted by the worker.
"Hey Peter!" The Redheaded clerk said, having seen him into that store - whether by himself or with MJ - probably hundreds of times before. "No friend today?"
Peter shook his head as he slowly made his way through the store. "No, not today. I messed up big time, Amelia."
"Uh oh. You want me to get out our new Spider-Man man merch? You do seem to love those things."
Peter leaned against the counter. "Yes please." He gave her puppy dog eyes and she laughed before going back into the storage room.
Peter looked around the store. He saw a girl from his school last year and her sister looking at shirts. Well, the older sister was looking at shirts. The younger sister on the other hand, was staring right at Peter. And he just stared right back, neither blinking.
Amelia came back out and Peter looked away from the six year old and back at Amelia. "Okay! We got a new shirt, Peter, and-" She pulled out a box from behind her back. "A Funko-pop!"
Peter's jaw dropped. His own Funko-Pop?! His dad and pops had their own, of course. They were IronMan and Captain America, why wouldn't they have Funko-Pops? But a Spider-Man one?
"I'll take them both!" Peter said enthusiastically, causing the older sister to look over at him and raise an eyebrow before looking back at the wall of shirts.
He cleared his throat. "How much will that be?"
Amelia chuckled. "Thirty-five dollars." She bagged the merchandise before she took the money that Peter gave her from his wallet and put it in the register.
"Thank you," Peter said, holding his Spidey merch.
"No problem." She nodded and smiled at him.
Peter and Amelia talked for a while. About Spider-Man, about summer, about fandoms- about a lot of things. Peter eventually decided to leave, needing to get home and yelled at.
"Take care!" Amelia told him as she helped some other people check out. "Your friend will come around eventually, Pete!"
"I hope so," Peter said quietly as he left, heading to the mall exit.
Time for my inner monologue and being controlled by self doubt! He thought as he began walking home. It was a few blocks away, he'd survive. It'd give him more time to not get yelled at for. Hurray.
Why did he do that? Why did he go and try to get those men? It accomplished nothing but making MJ mad at him. Well, he got Spider-Man merch, but that was beside the point.
They had known he would come. They knew he was coming and decided to trick him. But why? Why on earth did they do it? Why did they do this to him?
They knew MJ and Ned. That was not good. Not good at all. How much else did they know? How did they know?
Man, this was giving him a headache. He felt... terrible. He needed to sit down...
He saw Avengers Tower coming up and gave a sigh of relief. He stumbled his way inside and was greeted by FRIDAY.
"Hello, Peter. Are you alright? Your heart is beating quite fast and-"
"I'm fine. Where are my dads?" He asked, heading into the elevator.
"They're waiting for you in the kitchen, Peter," FRIDAY informed him.
"Thank you," He said, pressing the button to the kitchen floor. Best to get it over with.
Well, he thought when the elevator arrived at the kitchen and with his blurred vision he saw his dads sitting at the table. This is going to be fun.
