Chapter 44

"It's not what it looked like honest!" said Maddie, catching up to Wes in the entryway of the house.

"It looked like you kissing Asher," said Wes in a bit of a stunned monotone. He leaned against the wall.. perhaps needing added support.

"Ok... So I guess it does look what it looks like," said Maddie, "But it doesn't ... It doesn't mean anything. Not really!"

"So you randomly go around kissing guys for no reason?" said Wes.

"I- ah," said Maddie. "Well.. not usually." She bit her lip slightly as she awaited Wes' response. This could have gone a lot better.

Wes didn't answer but pushed away from the wall where he was standing and started walking away, deeper into the house.

"I'm sorry Wes," said Maddie with downcast eyes.

"Don't be sorry Maddie," said Wes, pausing at the archway. "Even if it was what it looked like. You're dating Asher, not me. You can kiss him fair and square."

"It wasn't right though," said Maddie. She debated telling him they broke up but knew she couldn't until tomorrow. Asher's kissing bet needs to be satisfied so she can get her diary back and .. the whole thing was such a complicated mess.

Wes shrugged his shoulders and threw his hand in the air as if to say, 'What difference does that make? What's done is done.'

'Don't give up on me Wes,' Maddie thought silently in her head. But there was nothing she could do but watch him go.

"Just give him some time," said Stella, whom Maddie hadn't noticed had followed them into the house along with Asher and Julia.

"He'll come around. It'll be ok Maddie," said Julia.

"And if it isn't?" said Maddie.

"Then we'll just have to try the best we can and focus on moving forward.
