"Good God what is that!" I said in shock staring at the opposite wall where the excess black paint was still dripping down the wall from the corners of each unfortunate letter. It reminded Maddie of the bloody messages left on the walls in horror films: red rum.
"I'm merely helping you to express your feelings," Stella said smirking.
"How do you figure?" I was reopening the can of pink paint with shaking fingers. I could just paint over the offending words. Right?
"oh, you don't have to act all coy with us. We're girls, not fat goldfish. We're supposed to notice these things," Julia offered.
"What things?" I whispered with my eyes wide, leaning forward to hear the answer as though it was a secret about to be revealed.
In the back of my mind I was still expecting to hear that breaking-glass scream, and suddenly find a body swinging from the chandelier right into the teepee paradise.
My eyes wouldn't stop jumping between the message, Julia, and Stella trying to make sense of the odd look the latter two were sharing.
"Oh, you know..."
"Um, no, not following..."
"Well, your hair"
"Oh, not this again?" Either I was very thick-skulled, or Stella should avoid any occupation involving communication. "My head's already itching enough from that shampoo you've made me leave in for the last hour and a half."
It was true. When simply washing my hair with the new shampoo didn't work, they insisted I leave it in for a yet-to-be-determined time period. I was now sporting the very stylish shower cap look to keep the shampoo isolated. Which is why we're running short of time in the first place.
"Well, you and Wes."
"What about us?"
"Well it's kinda obvious," Julia stared.
"So I thought I'd help it along," Stella finished for Julia.
"Help what along?" There was that mysterious look again.
"Well you know he's always looking at you and-"
My eyes flicked back through the message dripping on the wall and narrowed as I took in this most recent statement.
"Hold up. You think we're into each other!?"
Stella looked relieved that I'd finally caught on, but Julia still looked skeptical.
"Ha, heck no. He made my hair blue! Bright blue no less."
"Well that doesn't mean he still can't be--" Julia started
"Plus he likes someone else," I finished confidently as I started to slap the measly remains of the pink paint over the stubborn message.
"And he told you that?" Julia fished.
"No, I overheard them talking if you must know."
I was making little to no progress on the offending message. The black paint wasn't completely dry yet, but most of the words were still discernible. In other areas, it was just a gray-pink blur. Wes would still think something was up, but perhaps it wouldn't be so obvious now. A gal can hope anyway.
Julia, it seemed was still mulling over my previous words. And had yet to show even the slightest inkling to help me out with the incriminating message. Now I know what the 'b' stands for in 'bff' (backstabbing). Don't even ask me what the second 'f' might stand for...Alright, so I'm a bit pissed. But you would be too if you couldn't get the words "Maddie" and "underwear" off of a wall in a room where five attractive, hormonal, teenage, boys slept and did other unthinkable things.
"And by 'them' you mean Wes and your-"
"Brother, yeah," I said.
"And who might this lucky lady be?" Stella probed.
"I'm not sure. They didn't exactly mention her directly. And I only heard the tail end of the discussion."
"I see."
"Oh don't get all Sherlock Holmes on me. That's just what I heard."
"Hey look! I'm a mummy," Mary cut in unexpectedly from behind us, thoroughly wrapped in the remainder of the toilet paper. Stella rolled her eyes and went to untangle her, but Julia was distracted by an ominous sound.
"Hey gals, did you hear that?" Julia said, looking at Stella who was spinning Mary like a top to unravel the toilet paper.
