15: Hi'gh Float Part 2
As the Ferris wheel lifted from the ground, moving our cart slowly to the top, my stomach churned in anticipation. I was excited and happy, eager to reach the very top but someone, just couldn't stop talking.
"Why does your face look like that?" he asks as I turned in his direction. He motioned to my face which was red due to the evil-minded thought of me throwing him off the Ferris wheel. I could probably go to jail for twenty-two years for murder but, it was worth it.
I smile a little too sweetly at him before replying, "because I want to throw you out of this cart, even if it takes all night." I drawled, my eyes sparkling in amusement.
Zach burst out laughing, his face turned red but he didn't stop. When he finally did, tears had welled up beneath his eyelids. He wiped his eyes with a handkerchief. "Oh please, am wa-y too bigger than you. But, if you jump down with me, I don't mind," He said, giving me a smile that reached his eyes.
My heart stopped for a second, his smile held me captive. He never smiled like that before and I, finally take in his appearance. He was dressed in a white tee with a jacket and khakis, his hair looked so unruly and tamed at the same time! Who could pull that off? I resist the urge to run my hands through his hair, my eyes meet his for a moment. And he looked, complete. His eyes held a blank look through his fallout yesterday. And now, he looked happy again.
Before my eyes away from his I couldn't help but notice the sexual innuendo in his aforementioned speech. I rolled my eyes at him.
"You are delusional, am seriously going to throw you off to wipe that charming smile off your face."
"Charming, you think am charming? Well, you would say that since you haven't met anyone like me," he said, obviously full of himself.
Yes, I have but they don't match up to you.
"Ha, in your dreams, Reynolds."
"Am in your every dream, Daniels."
"You're not!" I yelled at him
"Am too." He yelled back.
"You're not."
"Am too."
"You're not!"
"You're not."
"Am too," I yelled back at him, I was so close to tearing his face apart when I noticed people from other carts including Jersey's noticed our little soirée.
I also noticed he had tricked me. The nerve. Saying a quick sorry to the spectators, I spun back to him "you tricked me!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah so! You weren't that hard to trick. You know, I should probably use it at home again to get you in my bed and trust me, this time. We won't be sleeping," he said, his voice normal as usual. Ignoring my already reddened cheeks, I sputtered at him. "You... idiot... you're..." I railed off when I noticed we were at the top already.
"Handsome." He added, but I didn't mind. I was staring at the enchanted view. The sky had turned orange and the sunset on the Santa Monica beach waters gave it that liquid gold's glow. Everything looked much smaller and for a second, I think I sighted Zach's penthouse.
It was beautiful.
Sadly, we had to go down to allow other people soak in the magical view. As we exited from our cart, the conductor gave us a skeptical look before walking away.
Great, look what Zach did.
We sauntered over to the Jennings, they were already on the ground a few minutes before us. Andre and Jersey gave us weird looks and refused to speak to us but Drew, on the other hand, was ecstatic. He told us both about his experience and we were going to ride the wave swingers next.
Jersey handed Drew over to Jeff because she was afraid of what could happen if he rode on it. We sat on our chairs, waiting for the ride to begin. When it did, it started slowly at first and a few seconds later, it picked up its speed.
I started screaming in fear or excitement, I don't know. I heard Jersey scream a few meters away. The rides tilted us clockwise before going anticlockwise.
When it finally stopped, I ran to the nearest potty I could find and puked my guts out and Jersey, on the other hand, started weeping. Andre hurried to go comfort her while Zach was chuckling right behind me.
"Smile all you want but I guarantee it won't last for long," I said groggily after I washed my mouth.
"Make me," he said mockingly before walking back to Jersey, who was buried in Andre's embrace. The good news was, she stopped crying.
"I'm okay Andre, I'll be fine if we ride one more ride before heading to the game booths," she coaxed her caring husband, who refused to allow her to move from the spot.
Reluctantly, he agreed and picked the pirate ship for us to ride. Taking Drew along with us this time, we made a beeline towards it.
The ride looked pretty much like a swing but with large space and open, seated gondola designed as a pirate ship. It was dangling high over a baby size wide pool.
Eagerly, I got on and sat down, Zach decided to sit next to me. It was a two column ride so I sat at the other end while Zach, sat in the other.
"You look like a baby you know that? Throwing up over some stupid ride," he said coolly.
I chose to ignore him, staring intently at the pool below us. The Jennings had already taken their seats in front of us, Drew was seated on his dad's lap. He was excited and jumpy, so was I. I mean it was just a swing, how bad could it be.
Soon enough, it was announced we should hold on to our seats with both hands. The ride started moving swinging us from left to right and right to left. It picked up the pace. It moved with speed but wasn't vomit worthy.
My eyes met the baby pool again. Suddenly, an idea hit me, "Hey Zach!" I called, he turned to look at me. Then I continued, "you know what a baby can't do?" I questioned, I removed one of my arms from the chair, still holding the chair tightly with my other arm.
"What?" He made a show of removing both arms from his chair as he asked. I grinned at him, "this." In a flash, I pushed him off with all my strength.
He tried to save himself but, it was too late. He yelled loudly as he fell downwards. He finally hit the water. I held on to my chair with both hands before bursting out in laughter.
His head finally resurfaced from the water. He gasped for air before raising his head to meet mine. I expected the look of death or mockery or something, but he was smiling widely.
Okay, I have no idea what was happening right now!
Minutes later, the ride slowed down and stopped. I was the last to get off the ride probably because... I was afraid of my life and my body, in particular.
"That's it!" I heard Jersey yell as I jumped off the ride. She was screaming at Zach who was still dripping wet, standing like a kid getting scolded by his parents. Immediately, my feet touch the floor, she spun around on me.
She was looking mad and Andre stood at a corner holding Drew, he was having a hard time trying not to laugh.
"You!" She said, motioning me to stand next to Zach.
"H-e-l-lo," I drawled in a unusual sing-song voice.
"I thought you guys were getting all cute and hilarious like an old married couple but instead, you are both acting like teenagers."
"He started it..."
"She started it..."
We said at the same time.
Jersey breathe heavily before replying again, she pinched the bridge of her nose before turning to me, "you don't push someone from a ride. Bad things could happen. Ruby, did you know what could have happened if Zach didn't hit the water?"
"Err....."
"He would have died that's what," she replied curtly.
Jersey's words sunk in. What I did was a stupid irrational mistake, but it was still going to make a funny story to tell my future children. "Am not saying you both should stop being yourselves. Am saying, you should do it without trying to kill each other." She paused for a few seconds.
I felt I was been Mom-ed but I kept my mouth shut.
"By the way you guys literary made everyone on our Ferris wheel laugh," she said jokingly and I gave a sigh of relief. I was saved from her bu-u-t wasn't sure about the doofus standing next to me.
We all headed for the game booths. After lots of games, I won a keychain and Andre won a yo-yo for Drew. It was already dark by the time we all decided to go home.
We moved along the boardwalk, gently dodging the people blocking our way and Jeff and Dennis walking behind us a few meters away. I spotted a shack shop from my peripheral view "Hey guys! Could you watch Drew for a minute? We want to get him a burger," Andre said, stopping us all from walking on. He pointed at the shack shop, Zach nodded in approval and took Drew from his arms. Andre mouthed a quick thank you before heading to the shack with his wife.
Drew was already asleep, he wasn't holding any action figures anymore. So I assumed, Jersey had put it away in her bag she brought along with her.
Remembering my phone, I muttered a quick "shoot" before tapping every part of my clothing to find it. I noticed Zach's puzzled look from the corner of my eyes. But I didn't care, I finally touched the small pocket located in front of the overalls. I breathed a sigh of relief when I felt the slim, cold hard metal.
Fishing it out quickly, I turned it on, hoping to see a sappy or cheesy message from Johnny. My face fell when I saw his message flash on my screen.
One word.
Hi.
What the hell?
I left him a quick voicemail before noticing he wasn't standing next to me. I spun around, looking for him. Panic already rising to my skin. That's when I noticed a dimmed dark mop of hair standing under a dim streetlight, leaning on the railings, holding a blonde haired child. Realizing it's Zach and Drew respectively, I stalked over to them.
The sun had disappeared already, leaving the boardwalk streetlights to brighten the pier. I could hear the waves hit the rocks, making a splash sound the smell of pine also invading my nostrils.
"I take it you didn't like what you saw?"
I couldn't resist the urge to roll my eyes. "Why do you care anyway?"
My question hung in the air, unanswered. We waited quietly for Andre and Jersey to get back.
"Excuse me! Is that your child? Aww, he looks so cute." A slightly older woman said as she walked by, the man with her presumably her husband, nodded affirmatively.
"What_ no_ way." We both spluttered into the air. The couple already walked off. "He doesn't even look like him!" I yelled after them.
Zach stared at me incredulously, "ooh please, he got his good looks from me, am his godfather." he said looking quite happy with what he said.
I placed my hand on his shoulder, giving him a sympathetic squeeze. "Ooh, Zach. You wish. But don't take liberty over a handsome man's creation."
"You're crazy." He said, looking directly at me.
"That's where you are wrong. You're the crazy one." I smiled roughly at him.
"Idiot."
"Asshole."
"Geez! Andre, would you look at that! Their little banter is back." A voice I recognized as Jersey said. I turned to my side and there she was, standing next to Andre who was holding a makeshift bag.
They were both smiling at us, weirdly.
