Chapter 1:Exposition

The pup's faces just dropped.

"What?" The Cockapoo asks in a shock tone.

"What's... the Paw Patrol? It says I'm the leader so, I feel like I should know,"

"First us, and now basically your life's work?!"

Wait, what?

"Life's work? What do you mean, what are you talking about?"

The puppies looked either sad, in disbelief, or a mix of the two and I feel even worse than I did before it's honestly sad seeing them so upset. I feel like this is kinda my fault honestly, I gotta least try to remember. I look up at the doctor who made another 'hmm' noise and walked to the side of my bed.

"Can you stand up?" She asks me.

To be honest, I'm not sure, my legs feel weird. I slowly grabbed the rails on the side as I slide over to the edge of the bed. I just now noticed the bandages on my legs when I brushed off my hospital gown, (force of habit I guess) and slowly stand up, feeling the cold floor on my bare feet. Man, I'm taller than I thought I was. It feels so weird being... 5'0? I think, I'm not positive, but I'm used to being shorter than this so it just feels off. I slowly let go of the rails and I'm able to keep balance and stand and walk decently like any human being with perfectly working legs can.

"How do you feel?" The Dalmatian asks.

"Hmm, uh- a little dizzy, my head still hurts, and I sort of need the bathroom,"

The doctor, Dr. Mila according to her name tag offered her hand to me.

"C'mon we're gonna run some tests,"

Hmm, ok I guess. I put my hand in hers and she walks me out of the room into the hall. It's a long porcelain-like hallway with the faint sound of a fan, they must not be busy because other than that it's scarily quiet if the lights weren't on I'd be terrified something would jump at me. The slowly increased need to use a bathroom doesn't help at all... I feel like I'm being watched or followed, but if the one horror movie I saw Father watching taught me anything, is if you're being followed don't look back.

She leads me to a hall with 3 bathrooms male, female, and unisex. I can already tell without even looking inside them that they're kinda dirty, there's a high chance something broken, theres probably a clogged toilet, and I can tell they all permanently smell of pee. I walk into the men's room and yup. A urinal is broken, a stall door is just barely hanging on to the hinges, a toilet was filled to the oberflow with toilet paper, and the lingering pee smell.... lingered.

I did my business and was washing my hands when I decide to look up at the mirror above the sink, is... is that me? I can't help but stare at myself, I'm not used to looking like this, it's like I'm a different person.

I still have the same skin tone, same brown eyes, same brown hair, but it's even those unchanged things feel different.

I stare at my reflection for so long that I end up noticing things that otherwise might go unnoticed. Like I'm used to being shorter, having really short neat hair brushed off to the side and completely clear skin. Now I'm taller, my hair is longer and feels kinda crusty, like too much hair gel was put in it, and the more I look the more I notice barely visible freckles along my cheek and tiny bits of very subtle facial hair.
(My guess is probably puberty kicking in.)

I end up staring at myself in the mirror for... awhile I don't know how long but awhile.

Knock knock.

"Hey! You ok in there?"

Oh, right I'm still in a hospital.

"I'm ok!" Whoops.

I walk out and the doctor escorts me to another room she looks slightly concerned.

"You feeling ok?" She asks
I just nod in response.

She takes me to this test room and starts running as many tests as humanly possible. Normal check-up, MRI scans, a couple more I don't remember. How bad was that accident? Actually no... what WAS the accident? I know I got some bad injuries but some of these tests felt... extreme. Sooner or later she escorts me back to my room sat me down on my bed and asked if I was ready for some questions.

"Do you remember the accident?" The doctor asks.

"No, no I don't"

She wrote it down.

"Do you remember your full name?"

"Yes, Zachary Ryder Mason the II,"

"HOLDITHOLDITHOLDIT!! Zachary?"

"Yeah that's my first name though, I highly prefer to be called by my middle name,"

She wrote down some more.

"Do you remember you're family members names?"

"Uhh, Karen Mason, Michael Mason, and Tyler Mason,"

"Who the hell is Tyler?" The cockapoo asks tilting her head. "Actually, who are any of those people?"

"My mother, my father, and my twin brother,"

"Oh," the three pups paused for a second. "I honestly just assumed you were an orphan like the rest of us, you've never mentioned them, at all," The dalmatian said, the cockapoo and Chae nodding in agreement.

"Wait, what?"

Uhh, what does mean by, 'like the rest of us'?!

"Hm do have any memories prior to this moment?"

"Uhhh, yeah? I... remember most of my life, but, by age 7 or 8 it all kinda, blanks out. I have no idea what happened after that,"

"So you don't remember meeting me or them," Chase, (yes that's his name) Asks points to the cockapoo and dalmatian.

"No, sorry,"

Dr. Mira wrote something down on her clipboard. "Hmm, bad news kid, looks you got amnesia,"

"Dammit" I heard the dalmatian mumble sadly. To be honest I'm surprised that I didn't know sooner. I mean when you think about it, it makes sense. These dogs know me when I don't know them, the time gap that realistically wouldn't make sense, it's all right there and I was too stupid to realize.

"Amnesia..." is all I can really say about this situation.

"Honestly you sort of got lucky," said the doctor. (I honestly forgot her name.)

"Not with the fact you got amnesia that honesty sucks, but you're lucky because you didn't lose all of your memories,"

"Oh, well, that's nice I guess,"

"Is there any way to get the rest of his memories back?" Chase asked.

"Hm, good question, maybe. For now, I guess it's good to get you acquainted with where you are now in life," she points to the window on the left side of my bed. There was a town just outside with a bunch of buildings and a mountain up in the far distance.

"This is Adventure Bay, Canada," she explains. "A quaint, relativity small town where everyone knows everyone," She's right the town does look rather small, but a comfortable type of small, a sleepy type of small. The type of small where an American tourist would probably visit and take thousands of photos of. It looked nice. The pups all hopped on my bed. Well Chase and the Cockapoo did. The dalmatian tripped on his jump, rolled over, and slammed into the window. The other two chuckled which probably means this happens a lot.

"Yeah, uhh get used to this, this happens all the time," he says as gets up to compose himself. The doctor chuckledand continued explaining "All the people are nice and our friends, heck, we even hold the title for friendliest town, don't believe me ask Google,"

"It's true, hell, their so friendly that everyone who knows what happened is worried about you down there, and are hoping you're ok," cockapoo said. They're worried about me? I never thought that'd happen a day in my life. I never really expect people to care about me anymore, so this is news to me.

"Also like half town thinks your dead,"

"Wait what-"

"OH LOOK THE TRAIN STATION!"

Choosing to ignore that last statement, I look out as the pups are pointing out landmarks from near and far.

The Train Station.

Katie's Pet Parlor.

Jake's Moutain.

Mr. Porter's Restaurant.

Town Hall.

These guys know this place like the back of their hand- er- paws. I look to the side and notice something else. A large tower that honestly looked out of place compared to the rest of the town. Like it was just randomly plopped there all the way across a bridge. It had a dome-like top and giant shield on the front and... sometimes spiraling around it.

"Hey, sorry to interrupt but, what's that tower over there?"

Chase leaned in. "That's home," he said blankly.

"Home?"

"It's where we live, with you, and Rocky, and Rubble, and Zuma," Chase explained he sounded kinda sad.

Wait I LIVE there?!

The cockapoo piped up. "It's also where we get our rescue calls, and where you build things, and more,"

"Rescues?" I know I invent stuff, hell it's the only thing my parents forced me to do that I actually ended up loving, but rescues?

"Yeah, helping the people with our vehicles and talents is kind of our job, and your life's work," The dalmatian said.

Welp there goes my parent's dream of me being president. I'm not complaining though, I'm just... amazed.

"You lead us and then we help people, here, there, anywhere really,"

I've always wanted to help people, mainly because I"ve always needed help for... what feels like my while life and no one ever helped me, and people in my old neighborhood always needed help and I couldn't do anything. Like, the old lady next door was getting mugged again, a guy couldn't move his couch and it fell on him, a downtown house was on fire, I felt helpless. So that's always been a big dream to be a cop, a fireman, a doctor, just someone who could help people. So the fact that my dream is real, albeit not as I imagined is... unbelievable. Bonus points for the dogs.

"So... are you gonna lead us again?" Chase asked avoiding eye contact.

"Huh?"

"Are you gonna lead the Paw Patrol again? I know it's a loaded question but, I've been waiting to-"

"Okay,"

"What?"

He had me at "Paw Patrol'.

"I said ok, I want to help people and that's clearly our job so, Okay!"

"Hm, that's nice but I'd stick to leading from home for a while, or if you're gonna go out, make sure the mission isn't a large scale,"

"Large Scale? How large?"

"Mighty Pups, Air Patrol, Sea Patrol stuff like that," The Dalmatian explains.

Uhhh, what? Somehow I'm more confused yet not-?

"Cool, uhhn please explain those-?"

"Ho boy," the cockapoo sighed. "Uhh, how long does he have in the hospital?" She asked jokingly. My guess is... it's complicated.

"Honestly, he's free to go,"

"Wait seriously?!"

"Yeah I mean judging by the info we gathered and the Paw Patrol's assets, he's free to leave,"

"Oh... well- well that's awesome!" The dalmatian said he and Chase wagged their tails and barked, the cockapoo made a cute 'yip' noise and did a full-on backflip. I don't think they realize how expensive health care can be. Yes I

"Yeah but how much will the bill be?" Dear lord.

"Uhh, there isn't one?" The doctor said very confusedly.

"Wait really?

"Yeah kid, you break your arm we fix it for free. We're in Canada remember?"

"Oh, I just remember there being a hospital fee from where I'm from anyway, for like, medical attention,"

"Well, we don't do that here so you're Gucci, you're good,"

Well, convenient. Then I guess I'm ready to leave. I still have a thousand questions but I don't like the idea of staying in a hospital longer than I have to when people are waiting for me to do something. My thoughts are running a million miles an hour, I'm still very confused, but all will make sense soon as I know it. I slowly get up and the pups lead me to the door.

"Thank you, ma'am,"

"No problem kid," she said before she walked out the door and went down the hall.

The pups lead me down the hall and out the door where there were 3 vehicles parked in the parking lot, an ambulance, a full-on police cruiser, and a pink, gray helicopter, I'm not even joking. The cockapoo hopped into the helicopter, the dalmatian in the ambulance, and Chase, well, duh the police car.

"You guys can drive?"

Chase half-heartedly chuckled.

"We learned from the best," he said quietly.

Wait, what did he mean by learning from the best-
"OH! OH! You meant me!"

Yeah, no duh Sherlock. I climb into the police cruiser behind Chase and he reaches into a compartment. He pulls out something with his mouth.

"Here," he says muffled. I took the thing out of his hand, it was a weird tablet with a shield with a paw on the screen, and a blue border around the sides.

"What's this?"

"You're pup pad, a thing you built, it's like a tablet but cooler," he started the car as he said that.

"What can it do?"

"Calls, texts, games, has multiple modes, and if you pull on the right, you can summon us to the lookout with a button,"

I pull on the side and see a big flat red button surrounded by sections of small lights are different colors. Blue, red, orange, green, pink and yellow.

"Do you want me to-?"

"No there's no need to, you'll know when people start calling you,"

"Ok-?"

And with that, we drove off. I'm still confused about a lot, but I'm willing to learn and understand what's going on. I also want to figure out what happenedto get to this point the pups described. Also I'm curious about the tower, I'll admit it's cool.
