Chapter 7

I began my day frightened about what it might hold. I tried to have optimism and continued my daily activities like nothing had happened.
I was sweeping sand away when I noticed something odd. I gently brushed more sand away to notice it was a pane of glass. What on earth is a pane of glass doing in the middle of a desert? It looked really old. I brushed more sand away, attempting to find the edges of the glass object, only to find more glass. I glanced around to see if anyone else had noticed anything. Everyone else was fairly far away from me searching there own section of the desolate place we've called home for over a month now. I knew I should tell someone. I should let them know what I had found. No, I am going to figure out what is going on for myself. Maybe this will help answer some of my questions. I continued to examine the glass for a bit but couldn't see what was inside. I decided to go ahead and move on. I didn't want to raise any suspicions.
Once night fell and everyone was asleep, I sneaked out of my tent and went to explore what I had found. Once I arrived, I noticed something strange about the glass I hadn't noticed before. Something from within it was glowing slightly. A pale green light was emanating from the small pane of blue tinted glass I had found.
I was so focused on the strange occurrence that I didn't notice someone had approached me. They laid their hand on my shoulder. I nearly screamed. The person then quickly covered my mouth. I whipped around to see Sansa. She looked so frightened. "What are you doing out here!" She whispered, "Are you trying to get yourself killed?".  "What are you talking about? I'm just out for a midnight walk. I couldn't sleep." I tried to assure her. "I know what you are doing Elizabeth. I know you found something. You need to cover it back up. Pretend you never saw it." She urged. "Why? Why is it so bad I found something? That's what we are here for. Wait, you asked if I was trying to get myself killed. Why would finding something get me killed? What are you not telling me Sansa?" I demanded. She looked at the ground. I could hear faint whimpering. "You don't understand. I'm sorry. I should've warned you. I was hoping you'd find out out your own and leave." She squeaked. "What Sansa please tell me? Why am I in danger? What is going on?" I pushed. "This land is cursed. There is something buried here that is not meant to be found. You just found it. We are all in danger now. You must leave before anyone notices." Sansa was shaking at this point. "I don't believe I curses. I'm not leaving." I stated. "Why is this not meant to be found?" I pointed at the ancient glass. "What lies inside was buried and forgotten for a reason. Please, I'm begging you leave." Sansa cried. "Leave with me then. But, I still see no need to be worried about a little pane of glass." I tried to comfort her. "I can't leave. I have sworn to protect and keep secret what is buried down there. I grew up in these lands. My father brought me here when I was very little. He was always very busy so the local townspeople raised me. I was taught all the old stories and traditions of this area. I was also told of a secret ruin that held a monstrosity within. My father died when I was only 10. The townspeople took me in. They said I was special. I was to safeguard those ruins and ensure they remain folk lore. I am on this excavation team to prevent them from finding what they are looking for. Please, leave. You are my friend. Not only does your life depend on you ignoring this, everyone else's lives depend on it too. Please." She was practically sobbing at this point. "Fine. I'll cover it back up." I promised. "We must vow  not to speak of it again. Okay?" She asked. "Speak of what?" Professor Zane growled. "Nothing Professor Zane. We were just swapping stories. Legends. We were just trying to pass the time." I answered calmly. He looked right at me and then back at Sansa. "I knew you were trouble from the day I let you join our crew. But I still had hope that you'd be useful. I guess I was wrong." He sniggered. "You on the other hand," he pointed at me, "I knew you would lead me to what I was searching for." He smirked. "Now since we've found our little treasure we shouldn't let anything stop us should we?" He commented.
He tied Sansa and my hands behind our backs and woke up two of the workmen and instructed them to watch us and make sure we didn't try anything stupid. What had I done? I should've left. I shouldn't have argued with Sansa. Now we were both captives. Our lives are now at the hands of the very person I had been trying to find.
