Chapter 5
The next day I snuck into Zane's tent only to find it empty. There wasn't even a cot in it. Where could he be? Was he even at the camp? While trying to figure out where he could be another question crossed my mind. What are we even looking for? I just realized I was never even told what it was exactly that we were searching for. I had been so caught up in the excitement of going on my first dig I had forgot to ask the specifics of it. I have traveled half way across the world only to not have a clue what I'm doing or really even who I'm working for.
I heard some shouting outside the tent. I quickly slipped outside to see one of the workmen packing his things and shouting. I don't understand much of what he said, but what I did understand frightened me a bit. He told us all to leave. He claimed we would all be cursed and not live to see the light of day for much longer if we continued. It may just have been my nerves running high but what he said truly and deeply frightened me. I ran back to my tent and didn't come out for the rest of the day.
The next morning I woke up and got ready as usual only to find half of our crew had left. My tent partner was groaning about it all calling them pansies for leaving. "They are all a bunch of frightened little girls! We didn't need them any ways. More money to each of us when we find what we have been looking for." She said. "What exactly are we looking for may I ask?" I questioned timidly. "It doesn't matter unless we find it! All of us need to quite talking and get to work or we will never find it." My tent partner growled. The day went on uneventful after that. But I couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. The workers who had left were all from this area they know it better than we do. What could possibly make them so frightened? What would make them abandon the dig and give up all the wages they had earned? Professor Zane was still no where to be found.
My tent partner knew more than she let on. What was she hiding? Did she know where Zane was? Why does she hate me so much?
I had so many questions and none of them had answers. All day Sansa pleaded with me to forget about it all. She told me to just do my job. "The sooner we find what we are looking for the sooner we get paid and get to go back to our families. Please just don't worry about everything else. Me and you have fun right? Just focus on that." She pleaded. "Alright Sansa, I'll try to focus on my work." I solemnly spoke. She smiled at me and we continued on looking for lord knows what, out in this awful desert, alone with just our small crew now just seven of us.
