Meeting Mick's family

It has been three weeks since the race in Baku and the team has gone back to being at the back. As you can tell the race in France was a disaster. At least there were no notable incidents despite the fact that Nikita is back. Anyway, we have a two-week break. After a long conversation with Mick, we decided that it was time for me to meet his family. Right now I am on a flight to Zurich where I will meet with Mick's mother Corinna. She insisted that she would pick me up. I'm not going to complain about it. For some reason, I am feeling a little apprehensive. The thing is I couldn't tell you why. I put it down to the fact that Mick's family will be protective of him. I find myself staring out of the window as the city of Zurich comes into view. I really can't afford to screw this up. I'm definitely overthinking things. After eleven minutes the plane made it to the gate. After a further five minutes, I have made it to the baggage claim area where I am intercepted by a woman who I assume is Corinna.

"Excuse me, are you Morgan?" The woman asks.

"Ja," I instinctively answer in German. I couldn't tell you why though.

"Welcome. My name is Corinna. Let's get your bags," The woman remarks. I can tell that she is being kind. The thought puts a small smile on my face. It doesn't take long for Corinna and me to grab my bags. I have a lot of stuff with me as Mick and I will be heading to Germany in two weeks so I thought I'd play it safe and bring some of my work clothes. I am about to take my bags when Corinna stops me.

"Let me help. You look tired," Corinna takes the bags instead. The answer is yes. I am tired. I wasn't able to get much sleep on the flight due to the fact I couldn't relax on the flight. It doesn't take long for us to reach her car.

"Thank you for your help Corinna," I thank Corinna as we take our seats in the car.

"So how did you and Mick meet?" Corinna gets to work on indulging her curiosity. Not that I mind as I am guessing that she wants to make sure that she can trust me.

"Well, I am Mick's number one mechanic. We got to know each other. Then when we were in Monaco Mick confessed. Before you can ask, I know the risks," I find myself telling her the basic version of the story. The thing is there are a couple of details that I am leaving out as they are not important. Thankfully Corinna seems to understand my last sentence. She has seen the effects of accidents first-hand. The reason why I am aware is because of my Grandpa.

"At least you are aware. Anyway, why don't you tell me a bit about yourself," Corinna is quick to change the topic. I try to think of something interesting but there is not much that I can think about.

"Honestly there is not much other than the fact that I like working with Mick. If I'm not working or with him, I spend my free time with my family," I say the first thing that comes to mind. As the conversation goes on I feel the apprehension falls away. Even Corinna seems content with what she is hearing. After a forty-five-minute drive, we made it to a house. It seems big enough to be a mansion but I wouldn't say it is. It doesn't take long for Mick to join us. He looks relieved.

"How was the trip," Mick checks on me as he gets to work on helping me with my stuff.

"It was interesting," I replied. As soon as I enter the house I am hit by the smell of food. After a quick tour of the house, I have decided to freshen up. It doesn't take me long to get myself freshened up a little. I even changed into some casual clothes. I am about to head to the kitchen when I am stopped by a weak knock on the door. I open it to find Mick's dad Michael. Despite the fact that he is wheelchair-bound I find myself in awe. I am standing in front of the greatest Formula One driver in the history of the sport. Before you can ask Michael will be the greatest until lewis wins his eighth world title.

"What can I do for you, Micheal?" I ask. Hopefully, I can keep my composure. I should be fine so long as I don't fangirl over this moment.

"I just...wanted to ask you a few...," Michael pauses as he searches for the right words.

"Questions. Go ahead. So long as you don't mind me making some coffee while you do," I finished his sentence whilst responding. I realise that it is not the best idea to complete someone's sentences but Michael looked like he was struggling to find the right words. He doesn't seem too annoyed about it. He starts to question me to the best of his abilities as we make our way to the kitchen. By the time we make it to the kitchen, Michael seems to have all of the answers he needs which is a relief. It felt like an interrogation.

"One last thing. Sorry... if my questions made you feel... uncomfortable. I'm worried about Mick," Michael apologises for some reason. In his defence, he had to ask as for all he knew I could have been friends with Mick because of his famous last name.

"Honestly Michael, it's fine. I'm used to it as my Grandpa was suspicious of new people. Would you like anything to drink?" I reassure him that it is fine. Michael shakes his head as I get to work on making a cup of coffee for myself. I am being careful of Mick's sister as she is the one making the food. After a few hours of relaxing with Mick and his parents, the time has come for what I would consider to be the most stressful part of the whole process of meeting Mick's family. The first family dinner.

"Morgan, you don't have to feel nervous," Mick is trying to reassure me. The thing is Mick's family are the only people on this earth that I want to impress.

"I'm sorry. I can't help it. I want to make sure that your family likes me," I explain.

"I'm sure they are impressed already. You haven't fangirled yet," Mick teases as he plants a small peck on my cheek. He is right. That would be embarrassing. There is still a chance that that might happen. You never know. With that, I head to the kitchen to see if I can be of use to Gina.

"It would be nice if you got the table set up for me. Thank you for your help," Gina responds to my offer. It doesn't take long for me to set the table. The others are equally quick to join us. After two minutes of various plates being passed around, we all have the required food. As I nibble on the food I find myself thinking about the day. Despite the intense questioning from Mick's parents, I feel welcome. I put it down to the fact that I've answered the questions in the right way. I can feel Mick glancing at me as I engage in a conversation with Gina. Mick has no reason to worry. I think it's all good. Even if it isn't Michael or Corinna would tell me.
