A year later
It has been a year since I left Haas and a lot has happened since. The Lucky thing is Mick and I were able to maintain our relationship. All I can say was it was hard work but it worked out in the end. Right now I am making the all too familiar trek to an office. This time it is to the office of my new boss Fred Vasseur. This time I know why he wants to talk to me. Mick is finally joining Ferrari and he has asked that I be his lead mechanic. It is a fact that fills me with joy as it will be much easier working with Mick. My problem with Charles was the fact that I wasn't really able to mesh with his style of work. Now I am not saying that Charles is hard to work with. He's just different from Mick. The joy is a little subdued to the fact that Mick will have a more considerable amount of pressure on him at Ferrari. I soon make it to Fred's office.
"You wanted to see me, boss?" I announce my presence. The good thing is Fred has an open-door policy unless he is absolutely busy. Obviously, I was called to his office so that is not a big issue for now.
"Yes. I just needed to make you aware of the fact that I need you to do some things on top of the seat fit," Fred responds as he passes me a small list of things to do. I quickly glance at it and most of the things have already been started.
"Oh by the way I know it's none of my business but I was wondering if I would be able to help Mick if there are any personal issues that come up," I ask. The thing is Fred knows about my relationship with Mick. It is mostly due to the fact that neither of us saw any point in hiding it.
"If he asks. Is that all?" Fred replies.
"Yes thank you," I say as I leave. For some reason, I have a giddy bounce in my steps as I head to the main workstation. It doesn't take long for me to arrive at my destination. Of course, Mick has beaten me to my workstation. I find myself staring at Mick. He looks handsome in red. I think it suits him.
"Morgan, you should stop staring. It's rude," Mick teases.
"Well forgive me for thinking you look good in red," I retort as I help him into the car. I catch Mick muttering something in German. He is complimenting both me and the car. The thought makes me giggle.
"Sag mir einfach, ob ich Anpassungen vornehmen muss (Just tell me if I need to make any adjustments)," I add as Mick gets comfortable. Mick seems glad that I replied to his comment in German. The thing is, unlike the first time we did this I know what we need. Mick double-checks a few things.
"It's all good. You got it right the first time," Mick replies. Good. It has been a couple of weeks since the seat fit and there is an excited energy flowing through the garage. It is the first of two days of preseason testing. There is a part of me that is looking forward to seeing what Mick can do with the car. The thing is I am aware that he did a demo run in the F2004 but this is different. In a few days, he will be racing with the team that made his last name famous. Right now I am briefing Mick on the changes that Fred asked me to make. It must be annoying for Mick as he just wants to get the data for the engineers.
"Sorry, Mick but I'm done. Now you can get ready," I end my small rant. The thing is I am worried about Mick. Not because of the fact that he is in a new team. I know how Mick deals with the pressure.
"Don't worry about it. It is something that has to be done," Mick says. Then I noticed it. A smile. It's the first time that he has smiled whilst working with Ferrari.
"Viel Glück," I wish Mick luck as he gets his balaclava and helmet on. It doesn't take long for him to get comfortable in the car. As Mick gets his gloves on I help him with his belts. It doesn't take me long. With the steering wheel in place, I give him the go-ahead to leave the garage. As soon as the car clears the garage I take my position between Charles' lead engineer and his lead mechanic. After thirty minutes of watching the data, I noticed something off with Mick's car. As soon as I do the radio crackles to life.
"The rear end of the car feels loose," Mick uses the radio to confirm what I see in the data. I am not worried as it is something that I can fix.
"Don't worry Mick. Morgan is aware. We'll have a fix for the next session," Mick's lead engineer responds. After a few hours of work, the time has come for the part of the night I am looking forward to. As per usual I am a little overdressed but it is something that I have done for every team dinner. Right now I am waiting for Mick. Yes, I finally have a date. That means I can finally explain to Charles and his girlfriend Charlotte that Mick is the boyfriend who had other commitments. That was my excuse for Mick not being there. As if on cue there is a knock on the door. I open it to find Mick. I am quick to catch him staring.
"If you don't stop staring we will be late," I tease. I guess it is due to the fact that I am slightly overdressed. The thing is I know Mick's here with plenty of time to spare.
"No. We won't," Mick retorts. I can hear the teasing in his voice. After ten minutes of driving, we made it to the restaurant. We are soon joined by Charles and Charlotte.
"I thought you said you were coming with someone," Charles remarks. He is a little confused. I can't blame him.
"Well, you know how I said my boyfriend had work commitments?" I prompt him. Thankfully he is quick to cotton on.
"Oh. I see," Charles responds. For some reason I find myself clinging to Mick's Arm as we wait for the others. Luckily for us, the rest of the group is quick to arrive. To be honest the only reason why I feel uncomfortable is due to the fact that people are staring. I put it down to the fact that Formula 1 has gained more fans. It feels like they are singling out Mck and I in particular. Oh well, there is nothing that I can do about it. After a minute of waiting we are quickly guided to the table. I am soon intercepted by Mick's lead engineer.
"Morgan, did you sort out the loose end?" He asks.
"I think so. However I am not really in the mood to talk about work," I say. The thing tonight is about relaxing. Despite the fact that my answer was vague at best I am feeling good about the adjustments. With that out of the way, I take the seat between Charlotte and Mick.
"So how long have you and Mick known each other?" Charles works on getting the details from me in regard to my relationship with Mick. Hmm. I never knew that Charles partook in any form of gossip.
"Two years, today," The thing is I don't mind being open about my relationship with Charles as I feel like I owe it to him especially given the fact that he has helped me through the worst year of my life.
"And they are the best two years of my life," Mick adds, making my heart flutter. Not only that but I can feel my cheeks changing to Ferrari red. Normally I can handle these kinds of situations but we are being watched.
"Anyway, Charles, you should stop pestering Morgan for details," Charles' girlfriend is quick to change the topic for me.
"Thank you, Charlotte," I find myself thanking her as she was smart enough to know that it was time for a topic change. My mind soon wonders what meal I'm going to have. For some reason, I feel like ordering something that Mick and I could share.
"Mick, do you think we could share?" I ask just in case Mick has other ideas. He seems to consider what I am asking.
"Yeah that's fine," Mick replies. It doesn't take long for the food to be ordered. After two long hours of socialising, the time has come for everyone to leave. Even though it has been a long day I am relieved. It is due to the fact that I am permanently reunited with Mick. It may sound possessive but the only chances that I got to hang out with Mick were during the breaks. There is another thought going through my mind. It will be interesting to see how Mick handles himself at Ferrari. I know that I will be doing my best to keep the car competitive.
"Thank you for making this night enjoyable," Mick breaks through my thoughts.
"Well it wasn't hard," I retort. Mick seems comfortable with the people that he spoke to. At least it is more relaxed at Ferrari. That is funny when you consider that Ferrari is one of the top-tier teams in Formula 1. The thought makes me smile as it is an odd thought.
