Chapter Three
Elizabeth thrusted her hand bag into Kathrine's arms. She then took off her coat and threw it on the ground, "Elizabeth? What are you doing?" Kathrine asked grabbing onto her arm restricting her from running towards the blazing boardinghouse, "He's in there. They're in there. I have to save them." Elizabeth twisted and successfully escaped Kathrine's grasp. She then ran towards the blazing inferno or the building.
A few of the boys were outside and were trying to stop her from going in. After dodging everyone, she made it to the steps. She could feel the blazing heat coming off of it. She kicked down the doors while the rest of the boys ran out, she couldn't find Race. The only place that he might be is his room. She ran up the steps to the door and opened it to find, nothing. She then felt something hard hitting her head leaving her in a whirl wind of darkness and heat.
Race saw Kathrine standing near the fountain holding Elizabeth's things, "Kathrine where's Elizabeth?" He asked with tension filling his voice. Before Kathrine could answer they heard Specs yell, "RUN!" As the brick building collapsed on the streets of New York, "Race. I am so sorry." Kathrine said as she started to cry, "What do you mean you're sorry? She wasn't in there right?" Race looked at Kathrine with wide eyes as she shook her head no, meaning that she was dead. Race felt like someone had just stabbed him with a twelve inch dagger to the heart. He could feel his breathing getting heavier and his sight getting dimmer, "Race ya okay?" He heard Jack ask as he put a hand on his shoulder, a few more boys walked over to watch the scene. Crutchie and Les emerged from the crowd hand in hand, "Race you look pale." Les said as he walked over to him, "Are you okay?" How could Race explain this to the boys. He didn't want to seem like a wimp. Les asked again, "Are you okay, Race?" Race felt tears streaming down his face as well as a soaring anger coming out of him, "She's, she's." He was mumbling, "Elizabeth is what?" Jack asked quietly trying not to anger Race, "She's dead." Race lost all control he fell to his knees and cried, "She thought. She thought that I was in there." He said between sobs, "This is my fault."
Jack's heart broke for Race. What if that was Kathrine, "Race, this isn't your fault." He said as he set his hand on the boys shoulder, trying to comfort him, "Yes it is. If I would have stayed home with Crutchie she wouldn't be dead." He shifted away from Jack's touch, "Just leave me alone." The boys nodded and decided to not anger Race further for fear that he would snap at one of them. As the group dispatched to try and find some where to spend the night, Kathrine stood up and handed Race a piece of paper with his name on it, "This was in her handbag." She said as Race took the paper. Kathrine walked away.
