Chapter One
Elizabeth and Race went to the cafe that was just around the corner. The couple sat down at a table for two next to a huge window. Race couldn't understand why Elizabeth seemed so distant. She wouldn't drink the coffee she ordered, she wouldn't talk as much as she usually does, and she was acting coy, "Hey, Eliza?" She looked up as Race asked, "You doin okay?" She furrowed her brow in confusion, "What do you mean?" Now Race was getting annoyed.
Race hated it when ever a close friend was playing coy and holding back something, "Hey let's go back to Jack's" he said as she paid for their drinks and stood up to leave.
Elizabeth was terrified as she walked hand in hand with Race. After talking to Rowan, her faith in having trust in anyone was once again diminished. She had hundreds of people after her head, and now Race's.
Elizabeth was walking with her head down but a man wearing a slouch hat and black blazer looked at her as they passed. She then began to move closer to Race their shoulders touching. Sensing her fear, Race let go of her hand and slipped his arm around her shoulders all while picking up his pace.
After what seemed like an eternity to Elizabeth, the pair reached Jack and Kathrine's apartment. The pair ran up the stairs and started banging on the door, "Alright, Alright. I'm comin. Just wait a sec." Jack yelled from the inside of the apartment. The two stopped. Jack opened the door. He was wearing an unbuttoned white shirt with his brown hair was sticking up onto pod his head. His scars from the attacks were visible on his chest and arms, "Hey, the boys are back at the boardinghouse. Mr. Johnson gave them the ok to go back." Jack started to close the door. Race jammed his foot in between the door and the doorway, "Yeah I know. Can we just stay here tonight? That's it." Race pleaded
"Race. I can't." Jack said. Race knew what he meant. The landlords threatened to kick them out of the apartment building if they let the boys stay there too long without paying rent for all of them, "Jack. Please. Just one night. That's it. One night. I'll pay." Race was begging Jack to let them in, "Don't pay, but if Kathrine asked ya did." Jack said as he opened the door, "Thanks, Jack." Race smirked and walked into the apartment hand in hand with Elizabeth, "Stay in the same room as last time." Jack said as he walked back to him and Kathrine's bed room, "Goodnight."
Elizabeth and Race walked into the same room where she almost died only a few weeks ago. Race felt nauseous as he sat on the bed. This room made him feel like he was in constant danger twenty four seven. His thoughts of fear were disrupted be Elizabeth's voice, "Race?" She asked as she pulled the covers over her,
"Yea?" Race replied turning to face her
"Go to bed. You need it."
"Okay. I will." He them leaned his head against the pillow and stared at the ceiling. Elizabeth shifted over to Race. She too felt scared in this room, she felt like she was being watched. Race noticed that she was uncomfortable and turned on his side so that their faces were centimeters apart, "Are you okay?" He whispered to Elizabeth
"I'm fine." She replied faking a smile
"Are you sure?" Race asked again
"No." Tears filler her eyes. Race wrapped his arms around her, "Race. I'm sorry."
"This isn't your fault Eliza. This isn't your fault."
Elizabeth kept crying into Race's chest as he clung to her harder, trying to give her a sense of safety in a city of danger, "Yes it is." She said in between sobs, "I put you in danger and you always pay the price for my mistakes-"
"Elizabeth stop." Race interrupted, "If I wanted to leave I would, but I love you. If I didn't love you I would have left a long time ago." Elizabeth stopped sobbing after Race Laos a kiss on the top of her head, "I love you." He said
"I love you too." She said as she drifted off to sleep in Race's arms.
