Chapter Two

The grand father clock in Kathrine's office read 4:00 pm. The work day was over, and she felt proud of herself. In only eight hours she wrote and revised a whole article. Before leaving the office she pulled out a small box from her desk drawer. The box was wrapped in a dark blue wrapping paper with a gold bow on top. As a smile began to form on her face she walked to Jack's office.
As Kathrine knocked on Jack's door he yelled, " COME IN!" Giddily, she opened the door. "Happy one year anniversary!" Kathrine emoted. " Same to you." Jack said as he turned around with a pink box in his hands. They walked to the center of the room and exchanged gifts. "You first." Jack said
Kathrine began to unwrap the sparkling pink wrapping paper to reveal another small box. With her curiosity peaked she opened the box slowly and let out a squeal when she saw a brand new pen with a few jars of ink inside. "How'd you know that I needed a new pen?" She asked. "Same way I knew you got me a gift." He replied with a smirk. "Wow. Sneaky Romeo over here huh?" Kathrine said with a giggle. "Open yours!"
Jack then began to open his blue wrapped gift. Hastily, he peeled back the paper to reveal a wooden box. Eagerly he opened it and revealed a gold watch. "Kathrine, how'd you know that I needed a new watch?" Jack said with curiosity in his voice. "Same way I knew that you got me a gift." She replied sarcastically. "Haha, nosy reporter." He said with a smile. "Oh come on, let's go home." Kathrine said as she grabbed his hand. "Ok." Jack replied with a smile.
Back at the house Jack and Kathrine walked into their apartment on the fourth floor. "Hey Bo..." Jack was cut off by silence. The boys weren't home. They were usually home by 4 pm and it was now 5 pm. "Hey, sorry Kat I should go check the boarding house, I'm worried." Jack said with a serious expression on his face. "It's fine. I get it. Go ahead." Kathrine replied. "You sure?" Jack asked with a bit of concern in his voice. "Yeah. Just be back by 7? Ok?" Kathrine responded "Ok." Jack gave her a kiss on the cheek and began to run down the stair way. "Weird" she thought. Jack never acted that worried since the strike and in the beginning of their relationship. She shook off the thought that the boys were hurt. "That's a positively silly thought. Don't mother hen then Kathrine. DONT" she told herself. She couldn't help but worry as she did the laundry, cook dinner, clean up the apartment, and make the boys's beds. The boys were like her and Jacks kids. If anything happened to anyone of the boys she would feel responsible.
All of the house work was done. She did everything she could do and the clock only read 6 pm. She had a whole other hour until Jack came back from the boardinghouse. Pacing back and forth in front of the grandfather clock that her father gave her as a gift, she decided to patch up the Newsies outfits. So, she broke out her needles and thread and began to harvest every article of clothing that had a hole in them. She even finished with all of the socks, pants, shirts, suspenders, jackets, and yes even underwear. Glancing back at the clock it read 7:30 pm.
Now she was feeling scared. Jack would never leave her waiting without at least calling, especially on their 1 year dating anniversary. All she could do was wait and wait and wait.
She made up her mind to go out at 8 o'clock to find him if he didn't return. She hoped and prayed that Jack a d the Newsboys were safe.
