Chapter Twenty-Three

Race didn't notice that he was covered in blood until he walked past a mirror as he held a handgun down the hallway that Jonathan ran. He didn't care. The hallway was dark and only lit by a few lanterns that lined the walls. He felt a sense of fearlessness as he neared the only door that had light coming from it, even creepier, it was at the end of the hallway. He kicked open the door to find Elizabeth tied to a wooden chair, with a handkerchief wrapped around her eyes and mouth, and Jonathan behind her with the gun. "Well kid you're not that bad at fighting. That Jack Kelly taught you well." Jonathan said as he grinned at Racetrack.

"Step away from her. Now!" Race said trying to not sound scared even though he was terrified.

"Awww, little boy is scared of playing with the older kids, huh?"

"You're the last person that I'd be afraid of."

"Really?" Jonathan asked sarcastically as he put the gun to Elizabeth's head. "How about now?"

"No." Race said as he stepped closer to Jonathan

"How about now?" He asked again as began to pull back on the trigger. Race's mind was filling with fear and uncertainty, "What will I do without her? If he kills he what will I do? What if I shot him?" Race didn't hesitate he pulled the trigger and shot Jonathan in the arm where he held the gun. Jonathan screamed before falling to the ground.

"No asshole." Race said with a smirk. He felt confident as he saw this monster fall to his knees. Wasting no time he ran over to Elizabeth. She was covered in blood, bruises, whiplash marks, dried tears, and her once beautiful blue dress was tattered and was quickly turning red. He untied the handkerchief around her eyes first, then the one around her mouth, her hands, feet, and torso came untied after that as well. The whole time that he was uniting her, she didn't move. Her eyes didn't open and she slumped down in the wooden chair.

He kneeled in front of her limp body and put his hands on her shoulders, "Elizabeth! Elizabeth!" Race said urgently as he lightly shook her. "Oh god please, Eliza wake up." Race's eyes were filling with tears as he pleaded for her to give him a sign of life. Race couldn't wait anymore, he picked up Elizabeth and held her in his arms while he walked down the red colored hallway that led to a blood stained living room. He felt a sense of anger and guilt as he carried her limp body down the stairs and out to the empty streets of Manhattan. It was now a little after 3 o'clock so the boys were still working and Mr. Johnson would be at his home so Race decided to take her to the boardinghouse for now.

Race swiftly carried her up to the spare room where only guests stayed for a short amount of time. He thought that she could use the privacy from the other guys' noise. He gently set her down on top of the cotton blanket that laid over a relatively new mattress and old bedframe. He was hesitant about leaving her out of his sight for more than a minute, but he had to grab the bandages and ice pack from Kathrine's care kit to help ease her pain. As he walked towards the room, he heard voices talking about him. It was Snyder.
