Chapter Twenty-One

"Yep. This is how our conversations end." Race thought as he put the note in his pocket. Jack and Kathrine were still sleeping. He decided to leave a note for them, thanking them for the hospitality. As he quickly wrote the note, he felt like he was hit by a bus. The realization of Elizabeth's situation terrified him. He feared for her safety. He feared that she may be killed. He feared fearing for her. "Stop it." He told himself as he walked out the door. Elizabeth was the girl who would keep her promises. He ran to the boarding house where he picked up his hat, cigar, and bag. He still had five minutes until the rest of the Newsies woke up so he decided to just head out to the circulation gate early.

The streets were a ghost town as Race walked with his hands in his pockets. The smell of dew and the city morning filled the air, and he was felt comfortable. Race took his time walking to the gates. He tried to map out a safer route that avoided Jacobi's Deli. He knew that he would lose a few customers but he didn't feel like getting beat up and threatened with jail everyday. Loosing a few customers were the least

As he arrived at the gate, he felt different. Almost alone. He leaned against the brick wall that stood next to the gate and closed his eyes. He was partly sleeping and partly awake and he had a dream.

It was him standing at the edge of a road with Elizabeth on the other side. She was wearing a white dress with a white bow in her hair. He heard a clock that struck 2 o'clock, and Elizabeth held her hand out to him and he ran towards her. After the clock chimes stopped, a red stain began to spread on her pristine dress. Race reached her and held her in his arms as she began to disappear. Her body began to disintegrate into dirt that flew away in the wind. "Race?" He heard "Race wake up!" He then felt a hand shake him as his eyes opened. "AHHHHH!" Race screamed.

The voice was Specs. "Are you ok Race?" Specs asked as his hand laid on Race's shoulder.

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine." Race replied

"You sure? You look really pale." Specs said as he removed his hand from Race's shoulder.   Before he could answer the other boys ran over to them eager to get their paps. As usual, he bought 100 paps and headed on his new route.

After a few hours, he sold 98 of his paps and gave his other two paps to some kids who wanted to read something. He felt good helping kids get an education. He was so busy trying to sell his paps that he completely forgot about Elizabeth's promise. He ran as fast as he could to the boarding house taking as many short cuts and alley ways he knew just to make it be 2. He stood in the alley where she was supposed to meet him and he waited.
