Chapter Three
The clock struck 8. Great. Dinner was cold. She was scared. Jack and the Newsboys weren't Home.
Hastily, she grabbed her coat off the coat rack and she raced down the apartment stairs. She bursted through the apartment doors and began sprinting down the sidewalk to the boardinghouse.
The boardinghouse looked the same as usual. Old, and rusted with mold covering part of the sign. The brick building seemed to loom over her as she stood at the front doors. "Jack please be ok." She thought as she entered. "Hello Kathrine." Mr. Johnson said. "The boys are upstairs on the third floor."
"Thank you" Kathrine replied half way up the stair case. Her feet were sore and her dress was taking a toll on her body. She tracked on.
She reached the top of the staircase on floor three. She slammed open the doors to find all of the boys in Crutchie's room. Everyone stared at her. Every boy in that room looked sad. Some were crying and others looked injured, clearly something was wrong.
Without hesitation, the boys moved to clear a path to Racetrack and Crutchie's beds. "Oh my god." Kathrine whispered as she saw both of the boys' lifeless bodies laying in their respective beds with Jack no where to be seen.
She sprinted over to Crutchie first. Crutchie was crippled already making him a huge target for being jumped. "Crutchie. Crutchie wake up." Kathrine pleaded as tears welled in her eyes. His face was covered in bruises, blood, and brass knuckle marks.
"Kathrine?" Crutchie whispered weakly.
" I'm here I'm here." Kathrine told the boy as she held his hand.
"Where's Jack?" He asked
" He's not here?" Kathrine asked confused
" He got attacked too." Crutchie replied clearly in pain. He tried to sit up.
"Crutchie, stop moving. Lie still. Ok." Kathrine said trying to calm him down although she was terrified her self. "Who attacked you?"
"The Delancy brothers." Crutchie said with pure rage.
"Ok, Ok Crutchie. Stay here tonight. Jack and I will pick you all up tomorrow." Kathrine addressed the room. The boys stayed silent. "Get some rest." Crutchie was so weak he couldn't respond. He just closed his eyes.
Kathrine then stood up and walked over to Racetrack. The once proudly confident boy looked worse that Crutchie. Pieces of Racetrack's shirt were ripped and covered in blood, her legs and arms were cut and bleeding, but his face looked so terrible. One black eye, a swollen jaw, a huge cut going down his right cheek, and his lip was busted open.
"Race. Race are you ok?" Kathrine was crying now, the tears ran down her cheeks onto the boys bed. Racetrack could speak. He only moaned, "Kathrine. Where's Jack?" Racetrack mumbled.
"That doesn't matter right now." She was lying to everyone and herself. She was terrified for what those bastard Delancys did to Jack. "Was this the Delancys?" Race nodded.
"Ok. Ok." Tears began to run down the boy's face. "Race calm down and get some sleep. I'll be back tomorrow. I promise." Kathrine tried to comfort him and distract him from his pain but, she couldn't. "Boys get some sleep. Get some ice, bandages, and any medicine you can find. I'll be back tomorrow." Kathrine said as she wiped away tears. "With Jack?" Les asked.
"I can't promise that." Kathrine said as she knelt next to the eight year old. "But I promise that I'll look for him. Ok?"
"Ok." Les replied and hugged Kathrine and he started to cry
