Chapter Ten
Kathrine walked into the room to find Crutchie and Jack having a conversation. They stopped talking as she walked in. "Hey Kat, is Les at school?" Jack asked
"Yeah." Kathrine replied. She realized that Jack was wearing his old Newsies outfit, a blue shirt with a grey vest. That was the Jack that she fell in love with last year. The rugged leader of a group of underdogs. The man who hit on her at Medda's theater.
"Feeling better?" Kathrine asked as she sat beside Jack on his bed.
"My leg still hurts a bit, but everything else feels better." Jack replied as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer to him.
"Do you want to go home?" Kathrine asked both boys.
"Please." Crutchie said with a smile.
"Sure." Jack said. Kathrine stood up to help Jack stand. He was still limping. She put her arm under his arm, helping him stand. Crutchie followed. The group took their time walking down the stairs to prevent any other injury from happening. After a few minutes, they all made it safely down the stairs. The clock outside of the boardinghouse read 2:18 pm. It was the middle of the work day.
The streets were empty. The group walked slowly to Jack and Kathrine's apartment. Once they reached the doors Kathrine rolled her eyes at the view of more stairs. Again, Kathrine helped Jack walk up the three flights of stairs while Crutchie followed close behind. Once the trio reached the door, Jack dug into his pocket to find the key. After a few seconds Jack pulled out the keys to the apartment and unlocked the door.
Kathrine sat Jack down on the couch and Crutchie sat beside him. The group hadn't eaten in a few days so she decided to cook a huge lunch. Spaghetti to be exact. That was Crutchie and Jack's favorite. She got out the pot from the cabinet and filled it with water from the sink. She lit the fire under the stovetop before setting the pot on top. When the water began to boil, she added the pasta. As it cooked, she set the table. When the pasta was cooked she plated it and added the tomato sauce on top. By now it was 4 o'clock.
"Dinner is ready boys!" Kathrine announced. Jack and Crutchie stood up and began to run towards the kitchen with radiant smiles on their face. They all sat down and ate silently. "This is what I missed." Kathrine thought as she looked around the table. Her family was together again and everyone was safe.
