Chapter Five

"Kathrine stormed out of the boardinghouse with rage running through her veins. As she ran the streets of New York she kept telling herself, "Find your Jack, Find your Jack." She finally reached her apartment and began packing supplies.
She changed into a skirt with with a simple loose fitting white T-shirt. Next Kathrine went into Jack's wardrobe and rummaged through boxes of junk until she found his "hidden" brass knuckles. "He needs to hide things better" Kathrine thought. As she put the brass knuckles on, she realized that they were extremely loose on her small hands. She didn't care she wanted Jack. After wrapping her hair up into a messy bun she began to run towards her fathers office.
Still, as she was running into certain danger she kept thinking, "Find your Jack, Find YOUR Jack." As she entered through the doors of her father's office, people stared at her in shock. Her face was red with rage, her knuckles turning white as she clenched the brass knuckles, and her gaze sharp as a knife.
She took the fastest route to the basement, swung open the door to find, not Jack but the Brooklyn Newsies. She knew who they were but, Crutchie could lie about Jack like that. Their backs were turned, huge red gashes ran across their backs, and their hair had blood dyed into it. Jack or not, she needed to help.
She cautiously began walking down the basement steps. The smell of stone and moss filled the air. When she made it to the bottom of the stair, she didn't turn the light on. She walked straight forearm and knelt down to the smallest boy who was crying. "Hey, boy I am here to help. Come with me." The boy wiped away his tears and nodded he then went around whispering to the other boys to follow him. They all stood up and began to walk slowly and quietly towards the staircase. Once all of them reached the stairs one of them paused and asked, "Where's Spot?" "At the Boardinghouse on fifth street" she replied in a loud whisper. All of he boys began to run out of the basement and to the doors of the building. Kathrine went up last. As she stepped on the first step, she heard a voice. "Hey Kat." It was Oscar Delancy. He turned on the lights to the basement and smirked, "Here to find your little boyfriend?"
"Oscar shut up. Let me leave." Kathrine shouted. She then started to walk backwards up the stairs. "Not so fast Kat. Why are you trying to leave?" Said Morris at the top of the steps. She was cornered. Nowhere to go. "Dammit" she thought she never learned how to fight. She might have came packed but, she didn't know how to use the tools. The brothers, both smirking, came slowly in both directions to punch her. As Morris came into her punching rage, she reeled back and bunch him in the left side of the jaw. He got knocked back but he stood up and laughed. "So Jack hasn't teached ya how to punch yet?" Kathrine didn't respond. Oscar grabbed her arms exposing her face for Morris to do his worst. "Go ahead Morris do your worst. Jack can do better." She said as she spit at him. "He isn't gonna save ya today princess" As Morris leaned back raising his fist, she kicked Oscar in the knee with her heels, pushed Morris over the railing and ran towards the door. She slammed the door shut and placed the huge piece of wood across the door, locking the Delancys in the basement. Knowing what she had to do, she ran up the stairs to her fathers office.
"Kathrine!" Her father said in shock. "Why is there a huge bruise on your face?"
"Not important." Kathrine responded, "The Delancys attacked me in the basement. Call the police." Without replying, her father called the cops who were arresting the Delancys the next minute. Next problem on her list. Where is Jack?
