Chapter Eight
The man dropped Davey and Jack off at the boardinghouse and Davey gave him one dollar for the trip. Davey then helped Jack down from the cart. He was clearly limping. Jack's eyes were still closed and his lip was still bleeding. Davey let Jack lean on him as they walked up the stairs to the doors. They made it inside without a problem. Now the next challenge, the three flights of stairs they needed to climb. It took a while, but they made it up to the third floor. Davey through open the door and laid Jack down on the bed that was next to Kathrine. Race and Crutchie were conscious and were sitting on their beds with their heads hung in shame.
Kathrine's eyes shot open as soon as Davey laid Jack on the bed. "Jack!" Kathrine shouted she attempted to sit up. She screamed when ever she saw his whiplash marks all over his chest and arms, his lip was bleeding, his eye swollen, and looked like he was in severe pain. She fell out of her bed and crawled over to his bed side, tears were streaming down her face, party because of her pain and seeing Jack in pain as well. "Jack, Jack please wake up. Please, it's me." Kathrine pleaded, "Kat?" Jack said weakly.
"Yes, yes it's me who did this to you?" Kathrine asked with anger and relief in her voice as she held his hand.
"I'm fine." Jack said as he tried to sit up. Kathrine wouldn't let him,
"Jack stop. You need help. Don't avoid it. Let me help you once." As she said this Jack's eyes opened and he noticed Kathrine's bruises and tears that were all over her face. He cupped her face with his right hand and asked, "Who did that to you?" With rage suddenly filling his voice.
"No one important." Kathrine replied. "Just get some rest ok. I'll be here." Jack nodded. He knew not to argue with Kathrine. She always won. The rest of the boys left the room except Davey, Les, Crutchie, and Racetrack. Les was hugging Davey's legs and crying while Racetrack just stared at Jack and Kathrine with shame while Crutchie was crying softly and Kathrine was holding Jack's hand while she was crying over him. "How could things get any worse?" Kathrine thought.
The night passed and the Newsies left to sell the papers, after two days of sitting in a room they needed pay. Kathrine woke up to Jack holding her in his arms. His chest was wet with her tears. She could feel him breathing and a sigh of relief washed over her. "Good morning Kat." Jack whispered. Kathrine couldn't respond. She began to cry and she began to burry her face into his chest. "Kat, don't cry. I'm fine." Jack said as he pulled her closer to himself. "I'm sorry." We're the only words she could bring herself to say.
"Kathrine. It's not your fault. It's mine." Jack said
"No it's not. Maybe if I would came with you, you wouldn't be here in pain." Kathrine said in between sobs.
"Kathrine you being upset is painful enough, but you getting hurt is like death." Jack replied sternly
"Jack I don't care about me. I care about you." Kathrine said as she began to calm down.
"Kathrine. I care for you too, you know that. I would do anything for you." Jack then began to sit up carrying Kathrine with him. "Kat, I would kill for you. I would die for you. I would do anything for you. Can't you see that?"
"I do Jack. I do." Kathrine replied "But I'd do the same for you. Maybe that's our weakness."
"Love is not a weakness Kat. Our stubbornness is the weakness." Jack said with a smirk on his face. Kathrine stared up at him with big eyes. She knew that he meant every word that he said and that he truly did love her.
They both sat in the room in the bed alone, staring into each other's eyes. Kathrine couldn't wait any longer. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him into a kiss. He seemed to hesitate at first but he accepted it and pulled her closer.
"Ewwwwww" said Les. Les scared both of them causing them to separate from the kiss that they both longed for. "Why aren't you at school?" Kathrine asked
"Because...I didn't want to go." Les replied.
"I'm walking you to school." Kathrine said as she stood up.
"Nooooo!" Les shouted as he stomped his foot.
"Let's go." Kathrine said as she grabbed his hand. Les stood there for a bit but he gave in and walked downstairs with Kathrine.
