Formula 1 Mark Webber's 2010 defeat.

For any sport or career there are people lying in the background thinking "If i get THAT chance I can show everyone what I can do." Arguably one of those people could be former F1 driver Australian🇦🇺 Mark Webber. Early on in his career he just seemed to have bad luck with either not being in quality cars or just unreliability. In 2002 he had 7 DNFs with Minardi with points at his home race the only highlight. 15 of his 34 races with Jaguar during 2003-2004 were races he had DNFed. 2005 saw more reliability for the Aussie as he raced for Williams with only 4 DNFs..... before BMW joined Sauber, 7 of the 18 races in 2006 he actually finished. In 2007 he joins Red Bull but has 7 DNFs 2008 he only DNFs 3 times but his career starts to look like a lost cause for the big F1 teams. In 7 years he only scored 2 podiums and never won a race or finish better than 10th in the drivers championship. But to REALLY show how important 2010 was for Mark Webber we must go to 2009, AKA the breakout year for him and Red Bull themselves they were a midfield team but NOW they are a WINNING team with Webber winning two races and finishing 4th while teammate Sebastian Vettel🇩🇪 winning 4 races and finishing 2nd in the championship to Jenson Button🇬🇧. 2010 would not start too good for Mark. In Bahrain🇧🇭 his engine would be smoking into turn 1 would cause worry and finished 8th. He'd like to redeem himself the next race his home grand prix at Australia🇦🇺 he'd start 2nd behind his teammate Sebastian Vettel🇩🇪. Due to a rain shower means everyone is starting on intermediates. Webber would lose 2nd to Felipe Massa🇧🇷 at the start though as the saftey car is out after a crash from BMW Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi🇯🇵 Toro Rosso's Sebastian Buemi🇨🇭 and Williams's Nico Hulkenburg🇩🇪. Lap 5 and Webber has Renault's Robert Kubica 🇵🇱 but holds off the Polish driver. A lap later Webber gets by Felipe Massa's Ferrari. While another lap later Jenson Button pits for McLaren getting dry tires but goes off in turn 3. Now the hometown hero is after his teammate as everyone else pits for dry tires at lap 9 Vettel pits the next lap costing Webber because the dry tire is now seconds faster as Renualt's Vitaly Petrov🇷🇺 spins off and gets stuck in the gravel putting the Russian out of the race. Webber finally pits for dry tires as the aussie comes out 5th...before going wide in turn 1 loosing the place to Massa. Lap 16 he gets the place back from Massa and he defends from Lewis Hamilton's🇬🇧 McLaren but goes off and loses MORE time back to 8th. His fight with the Ferraris continue as he gets by Fernando Alonso🇪🇸 for 7th. Vettel's fight for a win ends with a brake faliure. Webber pits again and a lap later Rosberg🇩🇪 pits for Mercedes and gets by the German for 6th place and now 8 laps to go and Hamilton, Alonso, Massa and Kubica are all in front of Mark Webber 3 laps to go now Alonso and Hamilton battle and here comes Webber and he collides with Lewis Hamilton! Webber looses his front wing and finishes 9th. So with only 6 points on the board this left Webber 31 points behind Alonso in 10th. And after Red Bull losing the championship from their rivals getting a better start at the beginning of the season Webber needed to translate some results if he is to compete for the championship. F1 goes to Malaysia🇲🇾 for race 3 and it had an interesting starting grid to say the least. Mother nature let down a heavy rain shower early before the session. But Ferrari and McLaren thought it would be dry at the end of Q1 Vitaly Petrov nearly got stuck in the gravel as the track gets worse as oth Ferraris starting 19th with Alonso, and 21st with Massa while Hamilton started 20th and Button would start 17th. And insult to injury he would have made it to Q2 but got stuck in the gravel so he couldn't even participate. Webber got pole so it was key to execute on a day when their rivals are playing catch up. He'd lose out on the start to Vettel and eventually the win but with the new points system that is 18 points in the bag for Mark Webber getting 2nd. This moved the Australian up to 8th 15 points behind the championship leader Felipe Massa. Next was China🇨🇳 when he'd be on the front row once again but would still be 2nd after the start because of Alonso's start but the spainard would layer get a drive through penalty for jumping the start. It was beginning to rain and after a saftey car for the first lap wreck of Sebastian Buemi, Vitantonio Liuzzi🇮🇹, and Kamui Kobayashi brought the perfect opportunity to pit for intermediates. The Australian would do so coming out 11th. But the tires would burn out cause the track isn't wet enough for intermediates bringing him and everyone else who pitted for them back to pit road. At least Webber maintained his position in 9th until he was passed by Vettel and Hamilton put him in 11th. But he would follow them through to 8th. Lap 20 and Webber pits for intermediates as it is raining again but will it be wet enough this time? Well debris causes a saftey car and bunches everyone up. Webber would restart 6th but falls to 12th after going wide in turn 16 but he says that Hamilton pushed him off the track. What happened was Vettel was on the left of Hamilton and couldn't go anywhere so unfortunately Webber lost out. Webber would only recover to 8th putting him 32 points behind Jenson Button in the championship in
8th. Heading to Spain🇪🇸 Webber needs to rebound massively if he is to be considered a championship contender. And he started on pole and lead every lap to win in a dominant fashion. Monaco🇮🇩 was not so easy but despite saftey cars from Hulkenburg, Barachello, a drain cover check into turn 3, and with just over 4 laps to go a wreck from Jarno Trulli🇮🇹 and Karun Chandhok🇮🇳 he would dominate again and now shares the championship lead with Sebastian Vettel. The momentum would continue in Turkey as Webber would start on pole for the 3rd week in a row and the 4th time this year. But it would not be so dominant thjs time for the aussie. He would be pressured all of the first 15 laps by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton but after the stops would fall back to 3rd but now Webber instead has the pressure of Sebastian Vettel but both McLarens were all within 2 and a half seconds so one mistake big enough and Mark could be off the podium. Now another thing to add is rain is coming and now it is sprinkling on the track lap 40 Webber is saving fuel and coming on the backstretch would be the turning point of the race

This would cost Webber the lead and would finish 3rd. And true he might have a 5 point lead over Jenson Button but behind closed doors tension would rise within Red Bull. Helmut Marko a worker at Red Bull said to the media to the media that he doesn't blame Sebastian for the move so instantly it appears he blames Webber for it but Marko says it's unnecessary to the situation but he says that if Vettel never went for the move the McLarens would blast past them but the team never told Webber to let Sebastian through and he says that the right communication isn't going on. But even if Red Bull wanted to put team orders true they can't cause rule 39.1 says that team orders which interfere with a race result are prohibited or banned. But regardless at Canada🇨🇦 some corners of Red Bull blamed Webber and his engineer Ciaron Pilbeam for the wreck but as the video above says that the media made up some stuff that Red Bull claims isn't true. Anyway Canada needed to show that regardless that the team put their differences behind them and not be their own enemies for the championship fight. Webber would qualify 2nd but a gearbox change meant he'd start 7th but it isn't so straight forward as he'd start on the prime(medium) tyre which is the race preferred tyre as the (supersoft) options would not last long. After Massa and Vitantonio Liuzzi tangled alowed him to get to 5th and is challenging Button for 4th and at lap 5 he'd pass the McLaren at turn 8. He was setting up Alonso but he and Hamilton pit so Webber is now 2nd behind his teammate Sebastian Vettel. But at lap 14 Webber pits cause Both McLarens and Alonso are flying on the fresh tires and when Vettel pits he'd be 5th. But lap 29 Vettel, Alonso and both McLarens pit. What is going on? Fernando just posted the fastest laps the last 2 laps and his rivals pit again. Webber sets his personal best at lap 31 and is pulling away from the field. But lap 40 tides are turning as he says on the radio that his tires are beginning to go with 21 to go he'd lose the lead to Hamilton and pits for the options and finished 5th. He would lose the championship lead to the McLaren drivers and as F1 returns to Spain for the European🇪🇺 grand prix the Australian would hope to rebound getting the points lead back. Well he'd start 2nd but after a miserable start he'd end up in 9th so Red Bull pit him early for and aggressive strategy to get track position but a delay with the left front put him in 18th now he needed to get on the move first was Hekki Kovalainen's🇫🇮 Lotus but this happened.

Thankfully both drivers are ok. So the British🇬🇧 grand prix comes and a rebound was really needed to keep a realistic chance in the championship alive. Well it would begin with an upgrade Red Bull would bring, a new front wing. Red Bull gave Webber and Vettel 1 front wing each but in final practice Sebastian's front wing just randomly broke so Red Bull gave the German Webber's wing. Red Bull says from the data that the new wing performed didn't necessarily perform better than the old one with the difference in favor of the new wing being a tenth of a second. Than the media sensed that Red Bull favored Vettel once again. The team says the decision was made on the fact the Vettel was ahead of Webber in the championship by 12 points. Despite that another Red Bull front row lockout. You could tell Webber was a little salty about it as when asked about he said the team was happy with the results and looked like he has a point to make. He'd make it at the start being side by side for the lead and he wrestles the lead away from his teammate after Vettel gets a puncture from contact with Lewis Hamilton. Well Webber got the lead but now he has to hold off the hometown boy Lewis Hamilton he would pull a 6 second lead from him after the stops but a saftey car would come out after Pedro De la Rosa's🇪🇸 Sauber left debris all over the racing line on the backstretch but it would not stop the Australian driver from winning what could be his technical 2nd home race as he doesn't live too far away from Silverstone and on the radio you could tell he was pleased with this result "Fantastic guys not bad for a number 2 driver cheers." Well you could tell he kinda had a point to make and he did so in dominant fashion now tied with his teammate in the championship 3rd 17 points behind Lewis Hamilton. And afterwards he would say to the media that it was a different unique situation and he said he was gonna be honest how he felt and he believes that it won't happen again. So now he wants to continue the momentum in Germany🇩🇪 but it wasn't meant to be as he would only finish 6th after a oil consumption problem meant he had to back off both McLarens. In Hungary🇭🇺 though the British team was on the back foot and Mark starts 2nd assisted Sebastian in a Red Bull front row lockout. But what wouldn't be so helpful for the Aussie is that there was a small bit of oil just out of his grid slot which would do Webber no favors at the start when into turn 1 he loses out to Fernando Alonso and falls back to 3rd. But when the saftey car came out for debris he would get the lead but everyone else pits behind him. What is Red Bull thinking? Vettel built a big enough lead when he didn't need to wait behind him. Now he needs to take advantage of his race pace to make a big enough gap to pit and keep the lead. He'd set fastest lap one after the other and push like crazy. But still his teammate is in his pitstop window 6.355 seconds behind so he would still be 2nd but lap 32 Sebastian would need to serve a drive through penalty for being more than 10 car lengths behind Mark before the restart putting the German in 3rd place. Well you don't want to see your teammate get a penalty but for Webber's sake he is now about 14 and a half seconds ahead of 2nd place Fernando Alonso. 12 laps later the lead has grown to 23.7 seconds and he finally pits for his prime tires and easily keeps the lead. A little bit of a funny quote would come out of the Australian when he said it felt good to lap Michael Schumacher a legendary F1 driver but what would also feel good for Mark Webber is getting his 4th win of the season in Hungary and taking the championship lead by 4 points over Lewis Hamilton all in Webber's 150th start AND Red Bull's 100th race so it is all going very for them. So when F1 went to Belgium🇧🇪 momentum was on his side and it would be ramped up even more when Mark got his 5th pole of the year on Saturday when he celebrated his 34th birthday on Friday. So race day Sunday a race win would be the best birthday gift Webber can hope for. His hope would be slightly stalled by a miserable start of the race falling all the way back to 6th place after lap 1. The next lap he would get past Felipe Massa to get 5th. He would work on gaining positions for the next 12 laps and when Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button wrecked the championship is now up to 3rd even though on the very next lap out of Eau Rouge he fancied his chances to get by Kubica but had to mind his time. 23 laps in and Webber stops for the prime tires trying to pass Kubica but still is stuck behind the Renault. But however with 14 laps to go Webber's engineer would tell him rain expected in 10 minutes. 10 to go and rain begins to fall. And with 9 laps to go and the rain has arrived and most of the field pits for intermediates except for Mark Webber, Robert Kubica, and Lewis Hamilton. And they kinda meesed up but Webber was better at being cautious when Hamilton nearly beached his McLaren. A lap later though and the Aussie gets his intermediates and after a mistake by Robert Kubica by going to deep in his pit box Mark gets 2nd place. And with 6 to go a opportunity is presented to win when a saftey car comes out for Fernando Alonso's crash. 4 laps to go and it's restart time. He would not get as close as he wants and it may not be a full 25 point victory Mark would like 2 days after his birthday but 18 more points are in his bucket which would be critical when 3 of his championship competitors failed to score and is only 3 points behind Lewis Hamilton. Is the tide beginning to turn into a 2 horse championship race? If so Italy🇮🇹 would set up a chance for Webber to fall back when Red Bull know that Monza just doesn't favor their car. So it's all about damage limitation for the championship. The damage would get even worse when a bad start means that puts Mark Webber in 9th place but it's better when his championship rival Lewis Hamilton DNFs from right front suspension after contact with Felipe Massa. Lap 6 and he recovers a place by getting past Michael Schumacher's Mercedes but the 7 time world champion wasn't going to give up but in the end the Red Bull wins the battle. Lap 20 and he gets by his teammate who suspects his engine is dying. Next on Webber's hit list is Nico Hulkenburg's Williams. But a couple of times he would lose the back end and go off the track in the first 2 turns and second chicane. After his pitstop he would get real close to Nico Hulkenburg and the Renault of Robert Kubica. He'd slipstream past the Polish driver into the second chicane. And then guess who is ahead of Webber, Nico Hulkenburg. And into turn 1 he would go off the track for the 3rd time now which didn't impress Mark when he said this on the radio. "Come on he's defended his position 3 times by going off the circuit so he has to give me the position." It wasn't meant to be though when he was told by Ciaron Pilbeam that he Nico wasn't going to let him through. But Webber would get encouraged by being told to force the Williams into a mistake knowing he's been of the track 3 times he was pushing so hard. But frustration is building when at the end of the first sector Hulkenburg got loose and aggressively defended against Webber and the Aussie was not happy with it. But with 4 laps to go he would be closer than ever to Nico Hulkenburg and goes side by side but the Red Bull driver had enough of being behind his former team and snatched 6th place finish. This allowed Mark Webber to retake championship lead heading to Singapore🇸🇬 the championship race was tightening up as the points lead could have been taken by any 1 of 5 drivers with 5 races left. It went like so, leader Webber, Hamilton 5 points back, Fernando Alonso 21 behind Button 22 off the lead and Sebastian Vettel 24 points back in 5th. And speaking of 5th that's where he'd begin the race. The worse of the championship contenders and not where he wants to be. He admits that he just wasn't fast enough. He wasn't fast enough to gain a place at the start either but still maintained his position. Strategy would make a first appearance because a rear suspension faliure forced Vitantonio Liuzzi to park his Force India and bring out a saftey car. Webber would be the only front runner who takes the opportunity to pit and get his mandatory stop out of the way and comes out 11th. The race gets restarted and he gets by Timo Glock's🇩🇪 Virgin into turn 4 and is now in the points. A lap later he'd get by Kamui Kobayashi in the same spot after the Sauber made a mistake. Lap 11 and Webber would do the same to Michael Schumacher after the Mercedes driver made a replica mistake. Then in the early stages of the 61 lap race Mark would be to to start saving his car brakes and tires for later. The Australian would do so, then on lap 22 he closes on Rubens Barrichello and is beginning to size up his opponent for an overtake into turn 18 but he JUST misses the wall after losing the back end. Cairon Pilbeam even told him to just keep the car in 1 piece after that scare. But the pieces would begin to fall Mark Webber's way when the leaders began pitting and is now in front of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button and gets all the way up to 5th but when a saftey car came out for a wreck in turn 18 by Kamui Kobayashi and Christian Klien🇦🇹 who's racing return gets cut short when his HRT runs into Kobayashi's Sauber but the Austrian couldn't see because the marshals didn't get a chance to get the flags out and Klien was not too happy. Speaking of a racing return Nick Heidfeld🇩🇪 would return for Sauber for the rest of the year replacing Pedro De la Rosa and in the end he scored the same amount of points as him. But anyway Mark Webber would be pretty happy when Rubens Barrichello and Robert Kubica would pit putting the Red Bull in 3rd place. But he is going to have the McLarens chomping at his heels on the restart. The race would get restarted on lap 36 and he has the two Virgin cars to lap of Timo Glock and Lucas di Grazzi🇧🇷 and he gets stuck behind the briefly and here comes Lewis Hamilton along his inside out of turn 6. The two leading championship contenders side by side for 3rd place going into turn 7 and contact is made! Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton make contact and Webber keeps going but Hamilton is out of the race! If Hamilton is out what's happened to Webber's car? His car according to Cairon the front wing and car is just fine. But what isn't so fine is that he would be under investigation by the stewards for the incident. But luckily for Webber and Red Bull no further action will be taken for that, and luckily for Mark Webber his tire was actually damaged and it survived the last 26 laps to a podium finish in 3rd place. This would leave the Aussie with an 11 point advantage over new 2nd place driver Fernando Alonso. He looked like he was going to extend his championship lead going to Japan🇯🇵 because the Red Bulls are on rails. He would start 2nd behind his teammate Sebastian Vettel. But after the start he'd lose out to Robert Kubica but the saftey car came out for Petrov, Hulkenburg, Massa, and Liuzzi all wrecking into turn 1. 1 more retirement is Robert Kubica who lost his right rear wheel out of the blue. And what's even stranger is before the race even began not on the formation lap but when the cars first joined the track for the start Lucas di Grazzi just lost his car randomly from a failiure. Well Webber is back in 2nd now. But he wants 1st from Sebastian Vettel and he would pull away from Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, and Lewis Hamilton so he can focus on beating Vettel to extend his championship advantage. He would need to decrease the lead his teammate has over him though to maximize the day and he would after pitstops by lap 30 he was beginning to close up on Sebastian Vettel. But he was closing on Jenson Button who hasn't stopped yet but after the McLaren driver did Webber did all he could to catch up to Sebastian Vettel. The Australian may have left his mark with the fastest lap of the race a 1:33:474 but Vettel won the race. But Webber was pleased nonetheless to claim his 9th podium of the season extending his points leas ever so slightly to now 14 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. But however it was clear that the Red Bulls were the fastest car on the grid but most of the pole positions the team has scored only 7 of the races this year they actually won. Before the inaugural Korean🇰🇷 grand prix there was a press conference with all 5 of the championship contenders with 3 races to go and Webber stated that he and everyone else could say for hours what they are gonna do but nobody knows.Well the Red Bulls for the 8th this season have locked out the front row. Webber is going to need to up his pace a little bit to beat Sebastian Vettel to make sure he doesn't get the upper hand. It would take 10 minutes for the race to start because of HEAVY RAIN. The saftey car would run for 3 laps until the race got red flagged to wait and see if the rain got better. Well that wasn't the case so the saftey car was needed once again. But after 17 laps, 1 hour and 40 minutes later the green flag is out in the inaugural Korean grand prix is underway! Now conditions are still treacherous and it showed when Bruno Senna🇧🇷 and Jarno Trulli went off into turn 1. So it is all about getting into a rhythm, with a wet race like this there could be SO much to lose but also so much to gain. Even it the result stayed the way it started Mark would still have a 7 point advantage over his teammate. Lap 19 and Webber is around! Mark Webber is around and and just touches the wall at turn 12! And the Red Bull gets hit by Nico Rosberg after he spun back onto the track! Oh no! Mark Webber, the championship leader who only needed an uneventful 2nd place to be happy is now out of this race! 2010 has been one of the most intense seasons in Formula 1 history! Nearly every race this season has thrown something unexpected at us in some shape, form, or fashion and another one has been thrown now with Mark Webber. And when he was asked by a reporter it was thought that he spun because of the conditions on track but Webber said he didn't spin because of that but because of him making the mistake of getting on the kerb. That would cost Mark the championship lead to new title favorite Fernando Alonso by 11 points. Next up, the penultimate race at Brazil🇧🇷 where Webber needs to rebound fast to stand a chance in the points battle. And the Australian knows it so he gets a 3rd place in qualifying. It may not be pole but his teammate who is behind him in the championship is 2nd behind Nico Hulkenburg's Williams so a chance for victory is still very realistic. Race day and he would have to defend against a fast starting Lewis Hamilton but successfully does that after the first 3 turns and now sizes up Nico Hulkenburg lookes at the outside but goes down the inside of the Williams to get into 2nd place. Now with Alonso behind Hulkenburg he could focus om getting to Vettel amd passing him. It was not so easy being teammates knowing the guy you are trying to beat has the same machinery, tools, and engine modes as you do. He put fast laps together but Vettel matched him and pitstops didn't do anything they held position all the way to the checkered flag. But it was an ok day in the championship race as Webber closed the gap from 11 points to 8. Still a tough task lies ahead at yhe season finale at Abu Dhabi🇦🇪 but with the Red Bull car if he can get pole and Alonso finishes 3rd than Mark Webber will be the world champion of 2010. The points would go like this before the weekend, Fernando Alonso 1st Mark Webber 2nd -8 points behind, dark horse or in this case dark Red Bull Sebastian Vettel -15 back and extreme longshot Lewis Hamilton -24 points out of the lead. The championship battle that had 5 drivers all year now has become 4 and it's time for Webber to unleash the pace of the Red Bull in qualifying. But his tires didn't have the grip because he ran too many laps on them and now he's 5th behind Fernando Alonso who qualified 3rd while Vettel and Hamilton locked out the front row. He is really going to have to buckle down in the race to get the championship crown and he would at the start like a dog biting the heels of 4th place Fernando Alonso into turn 7 but a saftey car for a wreck involving Michael Schumacher and Vitantonio Liuzzi stoped his charge. But at the restart he was still pushing even though he was in the meat of a Ferrari sandwich with Massa behind him. Still the Australian is pushing his car trying to get away from Massa and catch Alonso and ut showed at lap 8 at turn 19 just kissing the wall. He can't afford to do that especially if later on something happens to Alonso and Vettel ahead of him. But he is losing his rear tires though as he would say that on the radio when it appears he is falling off the rear of Fernando. Lap 12 he would pit pretty early trying to undercut Alonso. But he comes out in traffic city. His tires were pretty worn so he didn't have much of a choice and now has some passing to do. First Jamie Algersuari but he is really losing time behind him and he NEEDS to get past him as soon as possible and a lap later he would get by him into turn 8 and the lap and a half he spent behind him would prove very costly when Fernando Alonso makes his stop he comes out behind the Ferrari. So he tried the pits to get past him and now he has to pass him on the track. And insult to injury he is in deep traffic with Vitaly Petrov and Nico Rosberg not needing to pit again cause they stopped after the first lap saftey car. But for whatever reason he is beginning to fall off the back of the Ferrari! He just doesn't have the pace at the moment. But the Australian refused to give up at lap 22 when it's noticed that he locks up slightly in turn 1 trying to find the pace but he just is still stuck behind him and 4 laps later he gets loose of the last corner knowing that he needs to pass Fernando Alonso knowing his championship is slipping away! And in the end it just slipped away, he just was stuck behind Fernando Alonso and Vitaly Petrov for over 35 laps which made him end the season 3rd in the championship standings 14 points behind his teammate who won the first of his 4 consecutive championships Sebastian Vettel. Mark however would never be able to perform this well in a season again. Webber would do 3 more years with Red Bull and never won a F1 world championship. He'd
What if he hadn't ran his tires so hard during Q3 in Abu Dhabi qualifying? What if he wasn't stuck behind Jamie Algersuari for a lap and a half? What if he never wrecked at Korea? And last but not least what might have been for Mark Webber in 2010?
