Chapter Ten

The next day, Kristof, Katherine, Levi, and John set out to face the demon. Katherine's father wouldn't be coming, because his job was to protect the town.

Before the sun had even risen, they set off, waving their goodbyes, and making sure they had everything they needed. Now all they had to do was get to the cave, and kill the demon.

For the first few hours, they had walked on the dirt road. After a while though, this got covered by grass, and it turned into a step hill. They just kept going strait forward. Eventually, the hills of grass turned into more of a forest. The day was almost completely silent, but the slight breeze made an eerie whistling and creaking noise in between the trees.

Looking up into the trees, John was truly amazed at how tall they were. "So, since we're on the topic of killing demons, how did this one get here anyways?"

"Well," Kristof began. "When everyone was still allowed to go out of the town, there was this man, who lived in a small cabin, just in the middle of the woods, all alone. So supposedly, this man had man had gotten his hands on some pretty strong teleportation magic." Kristof paused, unzipping his bag, and eating part of an apple. "This guy, wanted to study strange and alien things that weren't exactly from around here, so he decided it would be a good idea to summon a demon. Before he knows it, he's dead, and he's ruined many human lives."

"Do you think that's how I got here?"

Kristof shook his head. "Nah, we would have felt it. The demon came through a... A portal of sorts. Kind of a rip in space and time. You can just tell its there. You've probably been here for a while though."

They all walked in silence for a while, not a sound in the air. "So, what about Levi here?", :o) asked finally.

"He's definitely been here for a while," Katherine said. "Golems start out really small, but then, they slowly take up all the minerals around them to grow. Their asleep the whole time, but when they're full grown, they just kind of wake up. Being a Golem, he has incredible strength, can regenerate at pretty fast, has rock hard skin, and can pass through and control any solid rock or rock-like materials."

"Oh... Well that's definitely useful."

Done with talking for the moment, they all walked in silence. For a place a demon lived at, John thought it was surprisingly cold.

Right when John was getting used to the silence, he was surprised when he looked up and saw all the crows starring down at him. "Wo! Why are they all doing that?"

"They expect the demon to come and kill anything, so they're just getting ready to eat. Not to mention, that the demon might be using magic to see through their eyes. Lucky for us, he won't come out till night."

John shivered, extremely nervous now. None of the crows made a sound. They just sat on the branches of trees, and whenever the group moved, their heads moved to watch them. If they got too far out of sight, they would fly onto another branch, their wings not making a sound.

John thought he would have preferred silence over noise, but now, he thought the quiet would drive him insane.

Then, they all stopped when they saw a small cabin. Opening the door inside, they closed it quietly. There were three rooms, with each of their doors closed. On the floor were scattered papers.

"So this is where that guy lived," John said. "So, why are we here?"

"You're part demon, so you might be able to find out where the portal is." Kristof said, starring around the place. "There will be that weird feeling... You see how this whole place is so dark? Even with the little cracks of light? The demon is doing that. It shows he's been here the most."

Shivering, John went to the first door, trying to ignore the whistling noise from the wind outside. As he opened the door, he expected to see the demon, sleeping right there. Instead, there was just a torn up bed.

As he opened the second door, Kristof and the others looked through the various papers and books thrown throughout the house. Apparently, they had decided they were all important, and had started carefully putting them in their bags. The only thing in the second room was a cabinet, but all the drors were empty and thrown across the floor.

The very second he opened the third door, he got the a weird feeling in his head and chest, like he was about to throw up, but couldn't. Opening the door fully, he fell over, his head filled with migraines. "Holly crud, yep, that hurts my head."

The group ran over, starring into the room. "Well that's nice," Katherine said.

John finally sat up and starred into the room.

In the center of the room, which was otherwise empty, there was a large hole, which seemed to make the whole room even darker. Apparently, the hole had once had a door, but that had been torn off its hinges, and was now at the back of the room.

Then, right as they all cautiously stepped into the room, which seemed to get even darker, even with the window next to them open, deep down somewhere in the cave connected to the hole, there was a distant roaring sound, which vibrated the floor a little.

"So," John began, stepping back from the hole. "Who's first?"
