Chapter Nine

After Levi had scared off the demon, apparently out of the town, John had immediately went to bed, exhausted, while everyone else watched the walls tensely, as if they expected the demon to jump over. John slept, but it was filled with thoughts that weren't his. He wouldn't remember them in the morning.

Well that was nice seeing a demon. Then again, it's nice seeing anyone, after being asleep for about four thousand, maybe five thousand years. Hmmm... Well, I guess it's my own fault I made myself a nice, happy, do gooder alter ego. Probably because I was sooo alone all those centuries. First would come the dreams. Those dreams would become so, so, so very real. And then those dreams would be filled with people. I guess part if me is one of those defective, goodytooshoes people now. Oh well. I guess I'll just take over when he's at his weakest. Well, he's waking up now. Guess it's time for me to go.
John stretched and yawned, the sun going through the open window. He felt like he could have slept forever, but now he was fully awake. He looked outside, wondering how the reconstruction was going. Many of the buildings had been burned or blown up, but it looked like everything was okay. There had been ten deaths though, and John didn't want that to happen again.

Adjusting his jacket, he opened the door, walking outside. The air was still, but filled with the smell of wood, and the banging of hammers and construction. Taking a right, John found Kristof, Frederick, and Katherine at Kristof's house, at a table on the porch. They were talking while looking at a weathered old map.

John nocked on the wall, trying to get there attention. Frederick fell out of his chair, startled. John sat in the fourth chair, helping Frederick up. I can't be that scary can I? I mean I get that I'm part giant evil fire breathing lizard, but I'm still part angel too. And demons have feelings too, you know?" He pointed at the map. "What's that?"

"It's a map of the land outside the walls," Kristof said. "Before the demon showed up, people used to go out there all the time, so we mapped the place out. We're looking at this, because we're planning on going to the demon's cave, and killing it."

John looked startled. "Are you even sure that's possible?"

Kristof nodded. "We know how to kill it, but we don't know how to kill it."

"What's that mean?", John asked, confused.

Frederick sighed. "What Kristof means to say, is that we know demons burn in intense ultraviolet light, such as the sun. But the demon goes back into its cave during the day, such as right now, during that time. So, we need to get those intense ultraviolet rays, into that cave, to kill the demon."

This time, Katherine spoke. "You know that bag you stoll from us? With all of Frederick's crud? Well, we have these gems, not unlike mine that control earth, and the ice ones. These are able to act as a container of sorts, but for sunlight."

"Did it kind of look metallic?"

"Yep."

John paused, thinking of what to do. "I hid the bag when I saw this place up ahead. I still know exactly where it is, but please, please, please don't try and murder me or something."

Kristof stood up, gesturing for everyone else to do the same. "Lead the way."

After a few minutes of walking out of the walls, next to the road, John led them to the blogs where he had hidden his and their belongings. He handed them their bag, and threw his on his back. "There you go. So, how do these crystals work?", John asked as they walked back to the town.

"Well," Frederick began. "They charge up sunlight in the day, but at night, they project all that sunlight out. So, since the demon doesn't like sunlight, we're using these, which there aren't very many of."

"They won't hurt me will they?", John asked, staring at the now open bag.

Frederick shook his head. "Demon angels come in different forms based off of whether they're like demons or angels more. From what we've seen, you have the armor and jumping ability of an angel, but the fire and healing ability of a demon. If you were more like a demon, you probably would have burned out in the sun." He paused, taking a drink of water, but then stared at the bottle, his eyes wide. "Wait, water doesn't hurt you right?"

"When I woke up, it was very humid, and that night, it rained. I didn't notice it then, but when I drank some water last night, it felt really weird, like I was frozen in place for a few seconds."

Frederick sighed. "That's a relief. You could have blown up in the very spot you were standing."

When John looked at him, wide eyed, everyone laughed.

After they went back into the town, they went to the table again, noting the suns position. Levi joined the conversation, happy to help at all. "So you're all going tommarow?", John asked.

Kristof nodded. "Frederick will stay here, but Katherine, Levi, and I will be going so we can kill the demon. We're hoping you'll come too, but if you don't want to, we could always use you as bait again. Besides, Frederick and the other local doctors and scientists need to do some final tests on you. You know, see if you're more demon than angel, the other way around, that kind of stuff."

John smiled a little. "I don't know, killing a demon sounds sooo exhausting. But if you want me to do it, I suppose I could help." He broke out laughing. "Okay, I'll do it. But I get a brake afterwards."

Kristof nodded. "I think we all need a brake after this," he said, as John followed Frederick, off towards a white building that had all the scientists and doctors.

About an hour later, Frederick stumbled over to John's porch, supporting John on his shoulder. When he reached the porch, he fell over, and John sat down, half asleep in one of the chairs.

"What happened to him?", Kristof asked.

"He was heavily sedated," Frederick said. "Apparently, John is right in the middle of being an angel and a demon. There's a small bit of him that may be demonic, but the chances of it affecting his everyday life are very small."

"Did YOu knOW My blOOd Is MoSqUito PROOF?!?!?!?!?!", John asked, barely able to raise his head, which had a goofy grin on it. A mosquito landed on his arm, it's abdomen filling with a dark black. But as it flew away, the demon-angel blood glowed a bright orange, and the back half of the mosquito blew up, a tiny trail of smoke going up as it fell. When it hit the table, it only twitched its legs. "SeE?!?!?!?!?!", John said, clapping his hands.
