Playing Dress-up
Author's Note: Hello! I hope you all are enjoying these one shots so far.
Because of Halloween being tomorrow, I figured this would be fitting.
Here are some things you should know before you read: In this one, you don't know that Steve is Captain America yet. You've been friends for quite a while. This takes place right before Age of Ultron.
"Finally," you breathed, curling up on the couch in your fuzzy pajamas. You hugged the warm box of Chinese take-out to your chest as you got situated and found the remotes. It was Friday evening; you had just gotten home from a long shift at work. It had been a very long week. Needless to say, you were ready for a movie marathon.
You clicked play and lifted the first bite of shrimp lo mein to your lips. Anyone can understand why you were greatly disappointed to hear the phone start to ring. Groaning dramatically, you paused the movie and tried to locate your phone.
Your spirits did lift a little when you recognized whose ringtone it was. Clips of a certain monkey's voice yelling "Gummy bears," "Mustache," and "Celebrate!" put over dubstep music came from the kitchen. It was on its third loop when you finally found it sitting on the counter.
"Hello?"
"Hey, (Y/N)." Steve's voice came over the phone, making you smile.
"Hey, Steve. How are you?"
"I'm alright. You?"
"Fantastic."
He chuckled. "I'm glad to hear it. I was calling to ask you- Or, I was wondering if you had any plans on the 31st."
"You mean October 31st? Halloween?" You had experienced far to many mis-communications like that to be completely sure.
"Yeah."
"Just to stay home and give candy to the trick-or-treaters. I don't really celebrate Halloween."
"Oh... Never mind then." He sounded disappointed.
"Wait, why? Did you want to do something, or..."
"Well, I was invited to this costume party at Stark Tower and wanted to know if you'd like to come with me."
"Wait, wait, wait! Did you say Stark Tower? As in, 'Billionaire genius, Tony Stark' Stark Tower?" No way! How did he get invited to a party at Stark Tower?!
"Yeah. So... is that a yes?"
"Yeah, sure! Who are you going as?" You asked excitedly. You loved costumes. And a costume party at Stark Tower?! With Steve? Who could say no to that?
"Oh, I haven't gotten that far. Stark said that we should try to match."
"Okay. Hey, tomorrow's Saturday. Wanna come over for lunch and we can decide then?" You looked around your apartment. It was going to need a bit of tidying up before he came.
"That sounds great! You want me to bring anything?" Aww! He's so sweet!
"No, that's alright. I just bought a bunch of sandwich fixings today. Do you like ham and cheese?"
"Who doesn't?" He laughed.
"That settles it. I'll see you then."
"See you then. Goodnight."
"Night!"
So much for relaxing! You scarfed down your lo mein before jumping to work. You raced around the apartment, picking up all of the mess that had piled up over the week. You vacuumed all the floors and washed the dishes. After dusting everything, you finally sat back down at the couch and glanced at the clock. 11:42 pm.
Remembering how tired you were, you muttered, "But my movie..."
To sleep, or not to sleep? That was the question. Another question was if you would be able to calm your excited self down enough to sleep.
'Eh, what the heck.' You resumed the movie and were immediately drawn back in.

You awoke with a stiff neck at 8:00 in the morning, still on the couch. The menu screen was still on loop. 'Well that was a stupid idea.'
After performing your morning ritual (showering, dressing, coffee, etc.), You pulled out your laptop and started searching for fun, matching costumes. There were so many, varying in difficulty and obscurity. From Thing One and Thing Two to a Coca-Cola can and a Pepsi can. Some of them were adorable, others... not so much.
At around 10:45, you came to a startling realization. 'I never told him what time!' you thought, panicking. 'He could be one of those people who eats lunch at eleven. Or he could be one of those people that doesn't eat until 1:30!
'Hold on. Calm down, (Y/N). No need to get all worked up. Just be ready at eleven, and if he comes later, then so be it.' That calmed you a little bit. It was a good thing you didn't need to run to the store or anything.
Soon enough, there was a knock at your front door. It was noon on the dot. 'Wow. Punctual.'
You opened the door to see Steve standing there with a two-liter of Coca-Cola in his hand. "Hey, Steve! You did not have to bring that! I mean, I'm not complaining... But still."
"I had to bring something," he smiled, walking to the kitchen,"Plus, I know how much you love Coke."
"Thank you. I hope you're hungry, because I've got sandwiches, tortilla chips, carrot sticks, Whales crackers, cookies..."
"Wow. You were prepared."
"Well, it helps that I had just been to the store when you called," You said as you started fixing the sandwiches, "About that, how on earth did you get invited to a party at Stark Tower?"
"Oh, I... I work there," he stuttered.
"You work there?! What do you do?" You were surprised. The two of you had known each other for quite a while and you didn't even know where he worked.
"It's, uh... It's complicated. I'm not sure I could explain it, but maybe I could show you at the party."
"Sounds awesome!"
You migrated to the table and began to eat.
"So, do you have any costumes in mind?" you asked.
"No, not really. I've never done anything quite like this before. You?"
"I've found a few that looked pretty cool. I think my favorite was the Peter and Lucy Pevensie one. But that's more of a brother-sister thing, I guess."
"Who?" He looked kind of embarrassed at the question.
"The Pevensies... From Narnia?" You waited, but he simply shook his head. "You've never seen the Chronicles of Narnia movies?"
"I've never heard of them."
You couldn't believe your ears. "Have you at least read the books?"
Again, he shook his head. "Sorry."
"Oh gosh. I have officially failed as a friend. This needs to be remedied as soon as possible." You took a moment to recover, then continued, "That's alright. How about Mary Poppins and Bert?"
"No, sorry." He looked down.
"You don't have to be sorry. We'll find something. Link and Zelda?" He smiled and shook his head once more. "Have you lived under a rock your whole life?"
Hmm...
To be continued...
