Chapter Twenty-Two

(Jason's pov)

After the police got through questioning everyone, I went over to George's house to check on him.

When they had declared Nathan missing, George didn't take it so well. He was having to file another missing persons report, for the only kid he had left.

From what Nathan's aunt had told me, George had went missing, later that day. When they had found him, he was sitting in front of Martha's grave.

When Elizabeth went missing, he had his wife and Nathan to keep him half way sane.

Sadly, two years ago, Martha had passed away from a deadly car crash. That was around the time that Nathan and his Father, had started to work on their relationship.

Nathan's relationship between his parents, had really went down hill, when his addictions had started. Especially with his Mother, his Mother had basically given up on him, without even trying to help.

His Father on the other hand, tried for a while, but between the stress from Lizzy and then what Nathan was adding on, he eventually gave up as well.

Sighing, I pulled up to the local archives.

Katie had moved out of her house, about a day or so before, Nathan's disappearance.

The police were trying to locate her, so they could question her, but they've had no luck in locating her.

Did I think she had something to do with this, hell yeah I did, and I wasn't the only one, the police had marked her as a top suspect.

I may have left out a few details, about Katie, like how Nathan and I had suspected her to be his missing sister. I didn't need the cops thinking I was crazy, that and I didn't want to upset George more than he already was.

Pulling the keys from the ignition, I opened my door, exiting the car before locking it.

I walked towards the old building, feeling uneasy. The knots in my stomach, haven't left once since I found Nathan's house the way it was.

Walking into the building, I was immediately hit with the smell of old books. I started walking in the direction of the secretary's desk.

I was starting to feel really nervous, the Hanson Orphanage case was a very touchy subject around these parts. So to say I was nervous was an understatement, I just hoped I could find what I was looking for.

"Hello, how can I help you," the secretary asked me, once I had reached the desk.

"Um, I was wondering if there was any way I could take a look at the stuff that you have stored from the Hanson Orphanage case."

A few people around me, quit what they were doing to give me weird looks, that also included the secretary. From the corner of my eye, I could see a few people whispering to one another, while they would glance over at me from time to time.

"Sir is there any particular reason you want these record's?"

"A family member of mine had told me that at one point someone from our family had lived there, that and I was kinda hoping I could use some of the information I found for this paper I'm currently writing for school."

"Give me a minute," she said, before getting up from her chair and walking away.

I released a shaky breath, that I didn't know I had been holding. God I really hope she bought that, I was hoping my nerves wasn't showing to much.

The woman returned, with two other people with her. Are they security, I thought as I started to panic a little bit.

"Hi, my name is Bryce, I work as one of the historian's here, this is Jace, he is also a historian," Bryce said, I shook both of there hands before Jace picked up where Bryce had left off.

"The reason Mrs. Jean came and got us, well we don't really have anyone who comes here asking for this specific case." He explained, I just shook my head, letting him know I understood.

"Well can I see them or are they not open to the public?" I asked.

"We will let you see them, but on one condition."

"Ok?"

"Mrs. Jean has informed us that you were wanting to use some of the information for a school paper, but we can't legally let you do that, a bunch of the family members have signed waivers, that forbid anyone from using the personal formation that is in the storage room," Bryce said.

"That's fine," I said.

"Please follow me then." I followed Jace and Bryce over to this electronic door. Bryce entered a code into the door, causing the little red light to turn green, before the door opened.

We started to walk down a dimly lit hallway, stopping at a metal door on the right. Jace reached into his pocket, pulling out a key card, as he held it in front of the card reader.

There was a loud beep, as you could hear the click of the door unlocking. Jace opened the door as he and Bryce entered the room, with me following right behind them.

"Please have a seat here and we will be right back," Bryce said, pointing to a huge wooden table that sat in the middle of the large room.

Bryce and Jace disappeared, somewhere behind the many shelf's that filled the room. I pulled out the chair that sat pushed up against the desk, taking a seat as I waited for them to return.

"So, you said you had a relative who had resided at Hanson Orphanage?" Jace asked, as he sat down a huge box on the table.

"That's what my uncle had told me."

"Well there's a good chance you could have, there were a lot of kids who had lived there at one point," Bryce said, also setting down a huge box on the table.

"This is all we have from the orphanage, so hopefully you can find what you are looking for in these."

"Are there any of the patient's records in these boxes?" I asked.

"Those will be in the box I brought in," Jace said.

"And the box that I brought in, has books with the names of every patient that has ever resided in the orphanage," Bryce said.

"Ah."

"Is there anyone in particular you are searching for I these record's?"

"Actually yes, I think my uncle said her name was Katie, I'm not sure about the last name though."

"Hmm, let's see if we can find a Katie." Jace opened the box, pulling out folder after folder, till the box was completely empty.

On the table laid exactly four huge stacks of folders full of patient record's. Each stack had at least twenty thick folders in them, each stack was held together by rubber bands, that had been slipped over them.

Jace slid one pile over to me, then to Bryce, then one for himself.

"These are stacked alphabetically, so start from the top and work your way down," Jace said, as we begun to look at the names written on the folders.

"No Katie here," Bryce said, as he grabbed the last stack of folders.

"None here either."

"Same here," I said.

"Found it," Bryce said, slipping the rubber band off, as he pulled the folder from the stack, sliding it over to me.

"Hopefully this is the right Katie."

Looking down at the folder, I saw the name, Katie Jones. Carefully, I opened the folder. The first thing I was met with was a picture of a little girl, that strangely looked a lot like Elizabeth.

Pushing the picture out of the way, I saw a page filled with her personal information. Skimming through, I noticed that the last recorded age for her was at twelve years old, the same age Elizabeth was when she went missing.

Looking further into the folder, I came across her medical records.

                Hanson Orphanage

Name: Katie Jones.

Age: Twelve.

Medical Conditions: Bipolar Disorder, Hallucinations.

Date of Admission: April 6th, 1962.

Release Date: N/A

Date of Death: October 31st, 1966.

The page just went on and on about what kind of test they did on her, and if they helped, but the thing that caught my eye was the year of her death. If I remembered correctly, that was the year of the great fire, that killed everyone in the orphanage.

I started to flip through the rest of the pages, until I came across a death certificate. Pulling it from the rest of the papers I started to read through it, my eyes widened as I kept reading over it.

Katie had died from smoke inhalation, and from how severe her burns were. I placed the death certificate back where I had gotten it, I took one last look at the picture of the little girl before closing her file for good.

"Are you through?" Bryce asked.

"I am." I slid the folder over to Bryce, as he put it back where it had been.

"Did you find what you were looking for?"

"I did, thank you very much," I said, as I stood from from my seat, before pushing the chair back against the desk.

"Glad we could help," Jace said with a small smile.

"Have a good day." And with that I left the room. I hurriedly made my way through the building, quickly leaving as I made my way to my car.

Once I was in my car, I tried to ease the uneasy feeling I had in my gut. I think I was more confused now, than I was before I went in.

Sighing I leaned against my seat, so was the Katie we had met, really Elizabeth, who was pretending to be this Katie girl. If it was Elizabeth, then why would she lie about who she was?

I had so many questions, but no answers. Groaning, I started my car, putting it in drive as I left the parking lot.

I tried pushing everything out of my mind, but I couldn't get Nathan out of my head, I just really hoped we were gonna find him.
