Chapter Twenty-Three
(Nathaniel's pov)
Its been exactly one month since I was taken that night. One month of pure hell, one month of nothing but pain.
My days started off the same, I'd wake up, they'd let me shower, eat something, then that's when it would start.
My question had been answered, about whether or not those knifes would be used on me.
I had several deep cuts, scattered across my body. Most of my body was covered in bruises at this point, if I wasn't getting cut on I was getting the shit beat out of me, kinda like how I was right now.
My body tensed as another hard kick was delivered to my stomach, causing the wind to be knocked out of me.
I was currently on the floor, curled up in a fetal position, trying to get air into my burning lung's.
"That's enough Vlad," the man named Father said, I could hear him walking closer to me, until his leather boots were level with my eyes.
He crouched down, running his withered hand across my bruised cheek.
"You're strong, I'll give you that much, most would've broke by now," Father said.
"W-Why?" I asked, my voice barely over a whisper.
"Why what?"
"Why are you d-doing this." Tears blurred my vision, as they threatened to fall.
"Well you see, I had a daughter once, her name was Katie, but my sweet little girl had a few things wrong with her, so she had to spend a little time in treatment, and at the time Hanson Orphanage was the only one who treated mental illness, so that's where she went, but she wound up staying there a little longer than originally planned, she eventually did get better though, they were supposed to release her on December 25th, 1966, but something tragic happened, I'm sure by now you know about the fire that killed everyone. Well my little girl was one of them, and do you know how the fire started?" Father asked me.
"N-No."
"Then I'll tell you, your grandfather was a doctor there, so your Father would come by and visit him from time to time, your Father was about fifteen or so at the time, so one night your Father and a few of his friends was just hanging around and one of them lit a cigarette and they dropped it, never finding it. Then that night everyone died."
My eyes widened as I stared up at him, was he telling the truth?
"Now I know what your thinking, oh my Father wouldn't do that, but you're wrong, you see one his friends felt so bad about what happened, that they went to the police, your Father only spent a year in prison for what he did, but your grandfather had a lot of pull in this town so it wasn't to surprising, when he made sure no one found out about it, also made sure that his prison record couldn't be found, so your Father just went on living like nothing happened, while I had to go home day after day to an empty house," Father said angrily.
"It was just an accident," I said defending my Father.
"An accident that took my little girl from me," he angrily yelled, causing me to flinch.
"So since you can't have her back you go and kidnap all those kids that went missing, trying to find a replacement for your daughter, but when you realize you couldn't you would just kill them," I yelled right back, causing him to give me an unreadable expression.
"That is until I found sweet dear Elizabeth over here," he said pointing over to where Lizzy stood, looking terrified.
"I was walking through the store one day when I spotted your Father, it took me a few minutes to recognize him, I mean he was a lot older than the last time I saw him, then I saw Elizabeth run up to your Mother, and I thought, I found her, I finally found Katie, after all that time I finally found her."
"The best part though, was that Elizabeth didn't fight me, you see she really loves you Nathaniel, you're quite lucky to have such a loving little sister, all I had to do was threaten to kill you and she was more than willing to do anything to keep you safe."
"You're fucking sick, you try and make my dad out to be some psycho child killer, while you're out here killing these little girls just cause they don't look like Katie, Katie is dead, she's not coming back," I screamed out at him, causing his jaw to twitch in anger.
"Our family suffered for fifteen years, because of you, you broke our family apart, why, because you wanted revenge so badly. Our Mother died, thinking that her baby girl was dead somewhere."
In the distance I could hear a gasp come from Lizzy, followed by what sounded like her sniffling.
Father stared down at me, tilting his head to the side as if he was confused.
"You know what's a shame Nathaniel?"
I just looked at him, waiting for him to continue.
"Your sister has done all of this for me, because I told her to, because I kept telling her that I would kill you and your family if she didn't, it's a shame she did all of this just to watch you die."
"You told me you wouldn't kill him," Lizzy yelled as she walked closer to us.
"Shut it Katie," Father yelled at her.
"Her name isn't Katie, it's Elizabeth."
He brought his fist back, slamming it against my face, causing a loud ringing noise in my ears.
"Shut up," he screamed out as the door opened.
"Sir I think you need to see this," a man said as he entered the room.
"Vlad come with me, Katie you stay here with him." Father stood from his crouching position, as he and Vlad left the room, locking the door behind them.
"Nate are you ok?" Lizzy asked, kneeling down beside me. She lifted my head up, to where it was resting in her lap.
"Nate?"
"I-I'm ok," I said, trying to reassure her, but truth be told, I was far from ok, I was in so much pain right now. I honestly didn't know how much more I could take, before I finally just gave up.
"God I'm so sorry Nate, I wish I could've just lied and told him that I couldn't find you or that I never saw you but he always had someone watching me," Lizzy sobbed out.
"I'm the one who's sorry," I said, as a confused expression spread across her face.
"W-What?"
"I'm sorry that I yelled at you that day Lizzy, fifteen years, for fifteen years I've been carrying that with me, I'm sorry I yelled at you that day, all you wanted to do was hangout with me, and I yelled at you to leave me alone." Lizzy looked at me for a minute, before she started to laugh.
"We haven't seen each other in fifteen years and here you are apologizing to me for telling at me."
I laughed as she pushed some of my hair out of my face.
"So what have I missed in all these years?"
"Well I got married."
Lizzy's face lit up as she looked at me.
"Really?"
"We're divorced now."
"Oh."
"But I did meet a really nice girl," I said looking up at Lizzy.
"Is she nice?"
"She's perfect, if I get out of here alive, I'm going to make her Mrs. Curtis."
"You mean the next Mrs. Curtis," Lizzy said, causing me to chuckle.
"Yes the next Mrs. Curtis."
"What's daddy like now, and what about momma before she passed away?"
"Well dad's retired now, he keeps bugging me for some grandkids, keeps bitching about how he's not getting any younger and neither am I." Lizzy smiled down at me, as she listened to what I was saying.
"And well momma, she was still working at the hospital before she died."
"That's all you have to say about momma?"
"After you left we drifted pretty bad, it was my own fault though, I wound up getting into some pretty bad habits, I was drinking to much, popping pain pills when I could get my hands on them, stealing money from momma and dad, even ran away from home once, they both eventually gave up on me, it wasn't until momma died that dad and me got close again."
"Oh." Was all Lizzy said, before several gun shots could be heard, before there was loud banging against the door.
Lizzy helped sit me up, as we watched the door, waiting to see who was in the other side of the door.
The door flew open as several cops ran into the room.
"We found him, tell them to bring the paramedics," one of the officers yelled.
"L-Lizzy," I stuttered out as everything around me started to get blurry, my body fell back, but before I could hit the floor, Lizzy wrapped her arms around me.
"Oh my God, Nate, Nate wake up," her voice desperately said as everything went black.
