That day ...

It was the dusk of one cold December day.

I sat at the balcony, attached to my bedroom, wondering why SHE, has not arrived  yet. I occasionally, kept glancing towards her balcony.

Ok … before you wonder about this awkward introduction to my story; let me give you a proper introduction.
I am Krishna.
And SHE is my Ratna, my  childhood best friend. We were neighbours since forever. (Well ... maybe not  forever, but as far into past,  my memory can travel; since then, I had known her as my neighbour. And that would precisely mean, her birth, 14  years before the incident from where I had started narrating.) Yeah, so other details, later. And why have I not started narrating from our childhood? Because, this particular  incident, which I would love to share with you eagerly; plays a major role in  our life.

So, as I was saying, I kept glancing towards her balcony, which was just opposite to mine. When I was about to go back into my  room in disappointment; she arrived. I leaned on the railing of my balcony, so I could look at her closer. I could not see her clearly because it was dark. But I came to know that she was  crying. How did I know? I don’t know.

“Ratna!” I called out to her softly. She lifted her head to look into my eyes. My heart ached to see the pools of tears swirling in her brown eyes. A tear slowly ran down her cheek.

“Why are you crying?”

She wiped her tears and whispered. “Nothing much.”

“Whom are you kidding?” Now I almost yell out of anger … no concern.

“Shh …” She placed her index finger on her lips, and looked around cautiously. Then she leaned on the  railing of her balcony. “Don’t  shout. I don’t want to worry them.” She whisper-yelled.

“But you want to worry me?”  I raised an eyebrow, crossing my arms across my chest.

She sighed in defeat and whispered. “Fine. At the swing in 5.” She turned around, and walked into her room. I kept staring at her back until she left the room, switching off the lights.

{Yeah … well … I can get a clear view of her bedroom; if the balcony doors are open and curtains are pulled apart. But don’t judge me. I never peeped into her room  when it is wrong. But I do enjoy the sight of her jumping on her bed; and behaving like a monkey! Occasionally … ok … always. What? It is entertaining to watch her have fun!!}

I too locked my room and rushed downstairs. “Mom! Will be at the swing, with Ratna.” I shouted, while unlocking our main door.  Without waiting for mom’s reply, I hurried towards our childhood hangout spot, the swing in my garden.
