Bruce's POV
"Goodnight Bruce," Dick said before he entered his room. I only replied with a slight nod of my head. This whole situation is very odd. I don't remember ever living a life like this one. But, something deep inside me is telling myself that it's real. It is telling me that these boys are my entire world. That I wouldn't be who I am without them. I don't know what part of me to listen to. The one that says to return to Ra's or the one telling me to protect these boys. For now, I will stay in the Manor and rest. I will stay as long as I am able to get some real answers. I enter my room and shut the door behind me. I strip off my shirt and sit on my bed. I look at clock on the wall and frown. It is only 12 AM, usually at this time I am training or doing a task for Ra's. Normally, I never get any rest. I doubt that is going to change, even if I am in the home I grew up in. Nonetheless, I should attempt to get some rest. I climb into bed with a sigh. I lay there trying to allow sleep to take over my body. Surprisingly, after a few minutes my eyes slide shut and I fall into a deep slumber.
I wake to the sounds of opening and closing doors. I hear voices muttering outside of Jason's room. I silently stand up and move closer to my door in order to hear the conversation. "What the hell Dick? It's 4 in the morning. I don't want to see your ugly face this early," Jason said.
Dick replied, "Whatever Jay-Bird. I wouldn't wake you up if it wasn't important."
"What's so important than Dickie-Bird," Jason said in an annoyed tone.
"They're here. They're in the Batcave," Dick said.
"Why didn't you start by saying that? C'mon, let's go wake up the replacement," Jason sighed.
I hear footsteps pass by my room and stop at Tim's room. After a few seconds, Tim knew what was going on. The three boys headed over to the staircase. "Hey, wait, what about Bruce? Should we wake him and tell him what's happening?" Tim asked.
Dick answered, "No. We don't need him to be there while we talk to them." After that all I could hear is footsteps as the boys made their way to the Batcave. Who in the world were they talking about? An enemy possibly? An enemy that has invaded the Batcave and is a threat to all of us? If it is an enemy, why would Richard wish to exclude me? I am more than capable of holding out my own in a fight. No matter how tough or powerful the opponent may be. Whoever it may be, I had to find out. The boys were going down there all by themselves and could be in danger. I frown, confused, at the unknown feeling that I have begun to have. It is a sense of worry, I had when I thought about the boys being injured or even worse killed. I growl and my hand tightens into a fist. I look at my clenched hand and facial expression. Since when did I become an overprotective father? I shake the thought from my head and decide to focus on the task at hand. My plan is to quickly and silently go to the Batcave and observe who is there. I will then determine, whether or not they are a danger to my family. Wait. My family? I consider these boys to be my family? It seems like such an odd thing. But, something inside me tells me it's not weird at all. I slowly open my door and make my way to the Wayne Study. Lucky for me, the entrance to the Batcave was left open. I slip through the doorway and disappear into the shadows. Standing in the Batcave, is the three Batboys and a group of brightly colored people. There is a tall man with a blue suit that has a giant red S on it. Next to him is a lady wearing red and gold armor. There is also a man glowing a tint of green with a green outfit and mask to match. There's a man carrying a giant fork-thing and he's wearing an orange and green outfit. Lastly, there's a man wearing a red suit with a lightning bolt symbol on it. The group of people didn't look like they would cause much trouble. They look like they could be defeated fairly easily. I analyze the situation in front of me and frown. If the brightly-colored freaks lay a hand on any of my boys, I will show them no mercy. "We know its late. We were in the middle of an off-world mission when we received your message." Blue suit said.
"Are you three positive Batman has forgotten?" the armor lady asked. All three boys nod. The group all frown and look at the boys. "I am so sorry boys. I know how much he means to you. Maybe it would be best if you don't stay at the Manor for a while," red suit man said.
Jason glares at him, "Hey Flasher. We're not going anywhere. We aren't little kids who will burst into tears. By being here we were able to get Bruce to remember some shit."
"Flasher" replied, "I-I just thought it would be better for you if you stayed away."
"Yeah, well you don't know us Flash. If you aren't going to do anything to help Bruce, why don't you just leave," Jason snaps back. Dick looks at Jason and then at the League.
He sighs, "Jason. Calm down. He is right about a few things though. We aren't leaving. There's nothing you can say or do to stop us from staying here with our father."
"He may not remember us. But, we remember him. He was always there for us when things seemed bad. We want to be there for him. We are going to get his memories to come back, with or without your help," Tim said. Something inside me made me smile. I got this feeling as the boys were talking about me. This foreign feeling that was actually pretty nice. The group's expressions all soften and all of them surround the boys. My hands tighten into fists. What were they going to do to my boys?! I will kill them the second I hear a scream of pain from my children. The group begins to move closer to the boys with their arms stretched out. "Hey. Stay away from us you creeps...." Jason says. The boys look at each other and then at the advancing group. In seconds the group was squeezing the boys. The boys cough and wheeze. "To tight!!!!" Tim yells out.
"Ow! Quit squeezing us!" Jason exclaims.
Dick wheezes, "C-can't breathe!" At those words I jump out of my position from the shadows and pounce on one of the group members. "Arthur!" armor lady yells. The group moves away from my boys and looks at me with shock. "Bruce. What are you doing?" blue suit asks calmly. I looked at all of them with murder in my eyes. "Be careful Superman. He doesn't remember us. And I am pretty sure we did something to make him mad," Flash said, his voice wavering.
"You touched my sons. That is punishable by death," I growl. The boys look at me in shock. I punch Arthur in the face, before standing up and advancing to Flash. "Arthur? Why didn't you fight back?" Green light asks.
"He is not himself, Hal. I will not fight an ally. A friend. As brother in arms," Arthur replied.
"I'm not so sure he thinks of you the same way," Hal replies. I swing at Flasher repeatedly, but I am unable to land a single blow. I growl and fake a punch, before performing a sweep kick. Because of this, Flash lands flat on his back. I grab a dagger from my pant pocket and throw it at Flash's head. Before the dagger could meet its mark, armor lady caught it. "Are you alright Barry?" armor lady asks.
"I am thanks to you Diana," Barry says taking a deep breath. Diana looks at me and then at the dagger in her hand. She quickly breaks it like it was a stick and throws it onto the floor. "Bruce. Please. Calm down," Diana says. The three Batboys gape at the actions occurring before their eyes.
I growl, "Well, Diana, you hurt my boys. That is unforgivable. It is my duty to protect them. All that matters is that they are safe. You have brought them pain. In turn you will receive no mercy." Before I could even attack once more, blue suit moved in front of me. "Bruce. Don't do this. We're your friends. We've been through a lot together. We're a team, remember," Blue suit said calmly. I scoffed and rolled my eyes. This man has clearly not been listening to a word my sons have been saying. "C'mon Bruce. You remember us, don't you? I'm Clark or Superman. That's Diana. You punched Arthur. And knocked over Barry. And Hal is the one in green. You can't forget us. We're your friends. Your teammates. We're the Justice League," Clark said.
"I have no friends. Or teammates. Apparently, you weren't paying attention. I cannot remember anything about you. Which means, I can kill every last one of you without a single regret. This is what happens when you hurt those I care for!" I exclaim getting into a fighting stance. I didn't even get a chance to attack before I was encased in a green orb. "Woah, woah, woah. Hold your horses, Bruce. We didn't hurt your kids. We were just giving them hugs. We may have hugged them a bit too hard. We don't know our own strength sometimes. They deserved hugs though. They wanted to help you, without our help at all. That takes guts," Hal states.
I glare at him, "Let me out. Or else. I will be the one to determine whether or not you have ill intentions for my boys. I will protect them even if it means risking my own life." The three boys approach the orb I am trapped in."Hal. Let him out. We'll handle this," Dick said.
"We can deal with Bruce. This is just all a simple misunderstanding. And by keeping him inside that thing, might just make things worse," Tim adds.
"Yeah, you know it would be even better if you guys just left. You are all honestly just causing an even bigger mess. We're more than capable of dealing with Bruce. We don't need you right now. We may or may not contact you if we need help later," Jason said, crossing his arms. The League made their way to the Zeta Tubes. As Hal and the rest of the team left, the orb encasing me disappeared. I land on my feet and stand up. "Hey, Bruce. Before we talk, maybe, you should take a deep breath. Calm down a bit," Dick said. I nod my head and take a deep breath in and out. I have no idea what came over me. I was driven by this force that was telling me to protect my boys. It was telling me to hurt anyone that dare lay a hand on them. It was telling me to do anything I possibly can to make sure they are safe and protected. This has never happened to me ever before. I have never felt this feeling in my entire life. It was peculiar and odd. But, it made sense given the situation. Those boys mean something to me. Even though I can't really remember them, they are family. Family. That word is pretty new too. "Um....Bruce? You okay and everything? You spaced out for a few seconds there," Dick said concerned.
"I am fine Richard. I should be asking you three the same thing. Are you alright? Did they hurt you?" I question with worry.
Jason smirks, "We're perfectly fine old man. Even if the JL was trying to hurt us, we could handle them. They're honestly just a bunch of softies. Nothing to worry about. Surprisingly, I found myself a lot more relaxed when Jason gave me that answer.
"Um....Bruce. Dad? C-can I ask you something?" Tim mutters softly.
"Sure. What is it?" I reply.
"Before. You called us your sons. You said you would do anything for us. You told them that all you cared about was that we were always safe. You said you would protect us with your life. D-did you mean that?" Tim asks, hope peeking out as he spoke
I couldn't help but show a small smile, "Of course I meant it. I may not remember everything about you all. But, your safety means the world to me. I have no idea where that comes from, wanting you to be safe. It doesn't matter. I know that you three are important to me. I would do anything to keep you safe from the dangers of this world. I care about you. All of you."
"We love you too, Dad," Dick said grinning.
I do not know if all my memories will ever come back. I know I want them to. I want to remember everything about these boys and the memories I shared with them. Even if the memories don't come back, I will protect the boys. I promise that no harm will ever come your way as long as I am alive. I do not know what I would do if I lost any one of you. There is one thing I will always remember, no matter what. And that is that, I love the boys.
