Chapter 6: The Shepherd
Storybrooke. Present. Nolan House
David Nolan and Kathryn Nolan are standing outside their house as she says to him," You know, you had the same look on your face before we bought it, too. You couldn't see past the ugly windmill on the lawn. And said you'd never buy an old lady house. Do you remember what made you change your mind?"
David answers," I see the windmill's gone."
Kathryn then urges him," Come on. Everyone's waiting."
Confused, David asks her," Who's everyone?"
They enter the house where David was welcomed by a cheering party of guests.
Kathryn introduces him to a man," This is Gene."
" Good to see you, David." Gene greets him.
David greets him back," How are you doing?"
Kathryn then introduces the woman next to Gene," And this is Ellen, his wife."
David smiles at her," Ellen, hi."
Ellen nods," Good to see you, too."
" And Frank."Frank welcomes David,"Welcome home, David."
David nods at Frank and he greets him,
" Hey."" Hey." Dr. Whale greets him back as Kathryn introduces him," Dr. Whale."
Dr. Whale waves at him," Hi, David."" Hi." David responds.
Dr. Whale says to him in an assuring tone," Look, I know this is a lot, but it's good for you. The smallest things can trigger your memories. Just try and have fun."
David nods," Thanks you Dr. Whale. I'll do my best."
In another part of the room, Henry turns to both Emma and Zatanna who are also in the house, asking them," You know why he doesn't remember? The curse isn't working on him yet."
Emma stares at him," Henry, David has amnesia."
" Which is preventing the curse from replacing his fairy tale story with fake memories." Henry states.
Emma spoke," Right, because everyone here has fake stories that prevent them from remembering who they really are."
Henry nods," Right, and now is our chance to help him. We just have to get him to remember that he's..."
" He's Prince Charming." Zatanna finishes his sentence.
Henry urges the two," We just have to jog his memory by getting him and Ms. Blanchard together."
Emma asks," Didn't we just try that?"
" And it woke him up." Henry points out.
David steps you to the two and he points out," Hey. You're the ones who saved me, right?"
Both Emma and Zatanna nods as David continues," And, uh, you're also the only one's I know here."
Zatanna welcomes him," You can hide with us."
David smiles at her," Fantastic."
He accepts some food from a tray, stabbing it with a toothpick and twirling it, thanking her,
" Thanks you."
Henry asks him," So, you ever use a sword?"
David laughs out, amused by the boy's question before turning to Emma," I'm sorry? Emma? You live with Mary Margaret, right? You know if she's coming tonight?"
Emma shakes her head," No, she couldn't make it."
" Oh." David sighs out in disappointment.
While David is in the midst of conversation, at the same time, Regina is in the kitchen with Kathryn.
Regina says to Kathryn," You should go out there. There's plenty of food. Go. Be with your husband."
Kathryn sighs out, lamenting to Regina," I lost him once. Now I have him back. But it's like I still don't have him back. You have no idea how that feels."
Regina disagrees," Actually, I do. I lost someone once too."
Kathryn looks up," Really?"
Regina nods," Yes. But the love I lost, there's no bringing him back. You have a chance here. Go to him."
Realising the merit in her words, Kathryn nods," You're right. And, Regina, thank you. Thank you for being such a good friend. It's been so lonely. I'm not used to having one."
Regina spoke," Neither am I."
Kathryn places a hand on Regina's shoulder," Well, like it or not, you have one now."
She leaves the kitchen and walks up to both Emma and Zatanna, asking them," Have you seen David?"
" Um, he..." Was all Emma could stutter out.
She look at Dr. Whale as hecshakes his head," No."
Storybrooke. Present.
David spots Mary Margaret trying to hang a birdhouse on a tree outside.
He rushes up to her, asking," Did you not get the invite?"
Mary Margaret looks at him," David."
" Here." He hangs up the birdhouse, saying to her," So I heard you resigned from the hospital. Was it me? Because of what I told you. About how I felt. About you. Come on. Don't tell me it's one-sided."
Mary Margaret shakes her head," You're married. It should be no-sided."
David however, isn't having it," What is should be doesn't matter. Whoever married Kathryn, it's not me. I didn't choose her. I'm choosing you. Now I know you feel it. I can tell."
Mary Margaret sighs out," I know you think that we have this connection, but maybe it's because I happened to be the person who saved your life? So why don't we leave it at that."
With that, she walks away.
Enchanted Forest. Past. King Midas Kingdom
In the enchanted Forest, Prince James is fighting a Behemoth.
The Behemoth throws Prince James over its head, and Prince James lies on the floor, seeming to be dead.
When it attacks, Prince James rolls out of the way and he plunges his sword into the Behemoth, slaying the creature.
Prince James stares up at the Behemoth, spitting out," Next time, make sure I'm really dead."
The Behemoth falls onto the ground as King Midas claps his hands," Well done."
" Well done?" King George questioned out," There's an understatement. You see what my son did to that brute? He just killed the unkillable."
King Midas nods," A valiant feat for sure. But it is still just a man. Can he do the same with a dragon?"
King George replies by asking King Midas a few obvious questions," Do Fairies sprinkle dust? Do Trolls live under bridges?"
Prince James goes up to King George, assuring him," Father, relax. I can kill whatever beast you set after me."
King Midas laments,"My kingdom is plagued by a dragon like nothing you've ever faced before. He has killed every warrior that's tried to slay him."
Prince James arrogantly boasts," He has yet to face me."
" My kingdom needs this threat vanquished." King Midas states.
King George said," And my kingdom needs gold. I'm sure we can work something out."
King Midas holds up his glove and someone removes it, with him saying cautiously," Careful. Remember what happened to Frederick." He turns to James, saying," Your sword."
Prince James held out his sword and with a single touch, King Midas turns it gold, saying to him," Consider it a down payment. You'll get the rest when you deliver the dragon's head to me."
Prince James bows in grattitude," It's a deal. Forgive me if I refuse to shake on it, King Midas."
King Midas laughs out in amusement, directing his attention towards King George," Come. Let's discuss the details."
King Midas and King George walk away as a Burly Knight declares out," A toast to our fearless prince!"
" Yeah!" The rest of the knights cheers out in unison only for Prince James to refuse.
"No. There's no celebrating today. This was but a simple test. The task before us it too big, too important to make light of. Just because I was easily able to kill this brute doesn't mean..."
Prince James couldn't finish his sentence as he felt a sharp blade pierce through his back.
It turns out that the Behemoth was not only alive but it was even using the Prince's speech as an opportunity to reaches up and and kill him
Prince James falls onto the ground, dead as the knights gathers around him.
Enchanted Forest. Past.
King George looks at Prince James, who was killed by the Behemoth, saying whispering to him," Good bye, my son."
As the Knights take Prince James's body away, the Burly Knight spoke to the King," Your majesty, there is no time to grieve. If Midas learns he is dead, he will find another warrior to slay his dragon, and we will never see an ounce of his gold."
King George nods," Yes. Yes. The kingdom must survive."
" So what are we to do?" The Blurry Knight asks.
King George answers," I have asked for help. It should be here soon."
Within seconds, he heard a familiar voice saying from behind," Oh, it's here."
King George turns to his knights, ordering them," Leave us."
As the knights leave, Rumpelstiltskin asks the king," So this is how you treat my gifts. You really must be more careful."
King George retorts," He was no a gift. He was my son."" A son I gave you." Rumplestilskin reminds him.
King George reminds the creature," In a deal we made. You did me no favors."
Rumpelstiltskin nods," Yes, yes I did. Shame you and the queen couldn't conceive a child on your own. My price for that is a pittance. But now that she's gone, well, I assume that conceiving an heir is out of the question. Let alone a dragon slayer."
King George asks," Then let's do another deal. Bring him back. I need my son to do this. I'll give you anything."
" Anything?" Rumplestilskin repeats, the King's proposal piquing his interest.
" What do you want?" King George asks, prompting Rumpelstiltskin to answer," There's a magic wand I desire. It belongs to a certain fairy godmother who's patron to your family. I want to know here whereabouts."
King George nods," Done. Now tell me. How do I bring my son back to slay the dragon?"
" Bring him back?" Rumplestilskin began shaking his head," Oh, no, no. That's out of the question. He's dead. Magic can do much, but not that!"
" But you just said..."" Nothing about resurrection." Rumplestilskin interrupts.
Feeling distressed, King George shakes his head hopelessly," Then my kingdom is lost. I am alone."
However, Rumplestilskin is still not finished," Oh, dear. Oh dear, dear, dear. Did I not tell you that I could I have your son slay the dragon? And am I not a man of my word?"
King George looks up, questioning out," I thought you said he was gone forever!"
Rumpelstiltskin rephrases," Oh, that he is. But his brother."
" His what?" King George questioned, shocked at what he heard.
Rumpelstiltskin states," His twin brother. Did I not mention there was another?"
Meanwhile, at a farm,Prince Charming, or David is dressed as a shepherd, looking over the sheep on a farm.
Storybrooke. Present. Blanchard Loft
Back at the house, Mary Margaret is roughly scrubbing a plate while washing the dishes in her apartment.
At that moment, Zatanna approaches her, saying," Hey. Mary. I get that the dishes are dirty but come on. There's no need to scrub that hard."
Mary Margaret stops scrubbing, sighing out in exasperation," Sorry. Just that there's a lot going in my mind right now."
" This have anything to do with David?" Zatanna asks," You know, it doesn't take a love expert to know that you have feelings for him."
Embarrassed, Mary Margaret stutters," We just, um, he just..."
Zatanna however, spoke," Yeah, I know what you both just. Look. I know that by right, what you two are doing is wrong but based on what I think. The only thing I could say is don't give up so easily."
Mary Margaret however, dejectedly sighs," But he's still married."
" I know. I was just at the party." Zatanna nods.
Mary Margaret then asks," What do you think I do?"
Zatanna then suggests," Well what I think you should do is just stop washing for a while and go for a drink. Come on. Emma is waiting."
Storybrooke. Present. Nolan House
At the same time, David is looking through old pictures at his house as Kathryn spoke about his old haircut," You look different. Your hair. It's longer. You used to always have a buzz cut. You used to complain that long hair was itchy. And hard to take care of."
David shrugs," I guess it grew while I was in there."
Kathryn then asks," So I was going to go to bed. Do you want to join me?"
David looks at her, asking," Do you mean "go to bed" go to bed? Or go to bed?"
Kathryn shrugs," Whatever you want."
David asks," Why don't we just sit and talk some more."
Kathryn leans forward to kiss David only for him to pull back, shaking his head," This isn't right."
Enchanted Forest. Past.
David is herding a sheep into its enclosure., speaking to them in the process,
" Come on. Come. Come on. Hey. Didn't see that coming, did you?"
Just then, Ruth, David's elderly mother approaches him," Honey."
David turns around, acknowledging her," Mother. How was the market?"
" It was interesting." Ruth answers, shocking her son," Interesting? Normally, you come back cursing the prices."
Ruth explains," Oh, well, that's still the case. But this time I had a very interesting talk with the grain merchant."
David asks as he is busy tying the fence shut," Grain? We don't need any grain."
" He has a daughter. She's ready for marriage. He thinks the two of you would make a great couple." Ruth spoke, attracting David's attention," Mother."
Ruth spoke," I know, I know, I hate myself for even bringing it up."
David then remarks," Let me guess. She has a dowry that will save the farm."
" We are running out of options." Ruth states.
" Mother, please." David strongly states," As poor as we are, love is one thing I can afford. I will find a way to save this farm, but I won't do it by marrying for riches. When I marry, I want it to be because I choose to spend the rest of my life with someone I love."
Ruth sighs out in exasperation," When are you going to learn? You can't have everything."
Right at that moment, both of them heard a voice saying," Oh, perhaps he can"
The two spun around, seeing Rumplestilskin standing there, laughing.
David looks at Ruth, questioning out," A twin brother? And you gave him to that man?"
Ruth explains," We were poor. Barely surviving. And he came along with an offer. One of you for the farm."
" Why didn't you ever tell me?" David asks.
" The deal forbade us from ever speaking of it. Your father regretted the decision the minute that man took your brother. He carried the guilt with him to his grave." Ruth sadly answers.
Right at that moment, Rumpelstiltskin interrupts," Hate to interrupt this tender moment. Time is of the essence."
David turns to Ruth, instructing her,
" Mother, wait in the house while I deal with this."
Ruth obediently returns to her house, leaving David alone with Rumplestilskin. David then questions," What do you want from me?"
Rumpelstiltskin shakes his head,
" Oh, not me, dear. The king. He needs a prince to slay a dragon."
" I'm not a dragon slayer." David says only for
Rumpelstiltskin to speak out," No, but your brother was. This new found kinship will be your salvation. Simply play the part. The king's knights will take care of everything else. All you must do is deliver the dragon's head to Midas."
" What's in it for you?" David questions Rumpelstiltskin only for him to answer," What's in it for me is my business. You should be asking yourself what's in it for you. You do this, your poor mother, well, the king is going to make sure she never wants for anything ever again. Your farm will be saved, and you, should you survive, you shall come home the conquering hero! Now don't tell me you don't want that."
David looks at him," I don't have a choice, do I?"
Rumpelstiltskin states," Oh, everyone has a choice, dearie. Just make sure it's the right one."
Storybrooke. Present. Granny's Diner
Mary Margaret is reading a newspaper in Granny's Diner when she overheard Dr. Whale boasting out proudly," I'm a hell of a doctor, huh? No way he wakes up on someone else's watch."
Mary Margaret looks at him, greeting the doctor," Hello Dr. Whale."
Dr. Whale says to Mary," So I heard that you resigned from the hospital. I hope it wasn't because of me."
Mary Margaret aaks him," Why would it be because of you?"
Dr. Whale sheepishly answers," Well, our date. I never called you after. Yeah, I know, I know. It's not classy, and I'm sorry, but if you could find a way to get over it, you know where to find me. Have a good day."
As Dr. Whale leaves the diner, right at that moment, Regina enters, stepping towards Mary Margaret before asking," Ms. Blanchard, may I have a word?"
" Of course." Mary nods as Regina speaks," I wanted to talk to you about my friend Kathryn. But more specifically, I wanted to talk to you about her husband David. You don't belong together. He's not yours. He's taken. Find somebody else."
" I haven't done anything." Mary denies, causing Regina to raise an eyebrow," Really? So he just up and left his wife on a whim?"
Mary Margaret looks up," He did what?"
" You don't know." Regina questions out as Mary Margaret shakes her head.
Regina then states," Well, I suspect you soon will, so listen carefully, dear. Because it's in your best interest. Stay away. He's in a fragile state. He doesn't know who he is or what he's doing, and you're this close to wrecking multiple lives. So before you do something that can't be undone, let him remember who he was."
With that, she turns around, leaving the diner.
Enchanted Forest. Past.
David, now donning knight armor, stood studying his reflection in a shield.
Right at that moment, King Midas steps towards him, declaring out," There he is. Our savoir. The man who is going to tear the dragon limb from limb."
David draws his sword as King Midas says,
" You do this, and you'll be a legend."
As he walks away, the Burly Knight steps towards David, saying," Here. Let me. You fastened it wrong."
He properly fastens Prince Charming's armor before ordering him," Here. Give me that."
He takes David's sword, prompting him to ask,
" Well, how will I fight? How will I protect myself?"
" You won't." The Burly Knight's answer surprises David as he continues," You will stay outside the cave while we kill the dragon. If you don't come out of this alive, Midas won't give our kingdom any gold. You might have the title of hero, but not the job."
The Burly Knight leads David and the other knights towards the dragon's lair as they listen to the bellows of the beast.
The Burly Knight turns to David, saying," The dragon's lair is through there. You stay here. We'll be back."
He leads the knights into the cave as David stays behind with two other knights.
David turns to one of them, asking," Did you know him well?"
" Who?"" My brother. The prince." David rephrases his question.
The Knight nods,
" Yeah, we knew him. He was the bravest man I ever met."
From the cave, the dragon roars and unleashes a blast of fire.
The trio stood up as they heard the sounds of agonising screams from the inside.
" They need our help." David tries to run forward, but the knights hold him back.
" We stay here. Our orders are clear." The knight insists
" People are dying!" David shouts only for the
Knight to order," Don't move! Stay back!"
Not willing to stand back, David breaks free from his captors and he runs toward the cave, calling out," Hey!"
He pulls the Burly Knight out of the way, asking him," Where's your sword?"
The dragon unleashed another blast of fire, the Attack followed by the sound of agonising screams from the men.
" Stay here." David instructs.
He tries to pick up a sword, but immediately drops it after realising how hot it is.
He runs between two rock faces, picking up the golden sword along the way, and the dragon runs after him, only to get it's head stuck in between the pillars.
As the dragon struggles to free itself, David steps towards him, questioning the creature," You didn't see that coming, did you?"
He swings his sword down, slicing the dragon's head clean off it's neck.
Storybrooke. Present. School
Mary Margaret is opening mail in her classroom at Storybrooke Elementary School.
Right at that moment, David enters the classroom, saying to her," Careful. Looks sharp."
Worried, Mary Margaret quickly objects," You can't be here."
" I need to see you." David insists.
With a feeling of dread growing, Mary Margaret says," Tell me you didn't leave your wife because of me. I do not want to destroy your marriage."
David shakes his head," You're not. It's me. I don't want to hurt her either. But the most hurtful thing to Kathryn would be me pretending. She needs someone to feel about her the way I feel about you."
Mary Margaret explains," I'm really trying hard to stay away from you. To do the right thing."
" Why is that the right thing?" David asks.
Mary Margaret then promptly answers," Because you already have a life."
" With someone I didn't choose." David says.
Despite the school bell ringing and the students streaming into the classroom, David stood his ground, saying to Mary," The man who chose that life, whoever married Kathryn is gone. The man here wants someone else."
Mary began pushing him towards the door, stating," You really have to leave me alone."
" Is that truly what you want?" David asks as
Mary Margaret orders," Go."
David however, is unwilling to give up, persuading her," Meet me tonight. At least think about it. I'll be at the bridge where you found me at eight o'clock. Think about until then and then decide. If you don't show, I'll know, and I'll never bother you again. But if you choose this, if you choose us, you know where I'll be."
He then turns around, leaving just as Zatanna walks in, greeting him by tipping her hat before looking at Mary Margaret.
After Class
At the end of the lesson, as the students streams out of the classroom, Zatanna sat down next to Mary and she asks," So what just happened?"
Mary Margaret answers," He left his wife. He left Kathryn!"
Zatanna widens her eyes upon hearing the news," Okay. Didn't see that coming."
Mary Margaret expresses our," He did it for me. He wants me to be with him. He wants me to meet him tonight."
" Really? That's great!" Zatanna compliments Mary, only to see a rather doubtful expression on her face.
Mary Margaret twiddles her thumb, saying,
" I mean, I'm trying so hard to be strong, but he just keeps coming. I mean, how do I stop it? You know, how do I let him down? What would you do?"
" I'd go." Zatanna simply answers in a clear cut manner, surprising Mary Margaret.
" Really? Are you sure about that?" Mary asks.
Zatanna then says," Mary. You have been rather selfless and kind to everyone. But have you ever consider what you really want?"
Mary looks down, pondering Zatanna's words as the magician continues," He already made his choice. But it is up to you to make yours. If you like him, then go for it. Don't be afraid just because it might upset Kathryn."
Mary then asks," So, you think I should give it a shot?" Zatanna nods.
Mary Margaret says," Given her new friendship with Kathryn, I don't think Regina would be happy."
Zatanna smirks and she says,
" All the more reason to do it."
Mary Margaret then asks her," You really have something against the Mayor do you?"
Zatanna answers," You have no idea."
Storybrooke. Present. Sheriff Station
Emma is seated down, looking through files at the Storybrooke Sheriff Department.
Right at that moment, Sheriff Graham enters the office, holding a box of donuts as he spoke,
" Sometimes the cliches are true."
Emma looks up at him," Okay. What do you want?"
Sheriff Graham then requests," Remember when I said no night shifts? I need you to work tonight. Just this once."
" Why?" Emma asked.
Sheriff Graham explains," I volunteered at an animal shelter, and the supervisor is sick, and someone needs to feed the dogs."
Emma takes out a bear claw from a box, expressing out the irony," Very lucky you brought a bear claw."
Sheriff Graham awkwardly says," I'll just go patrol my office."
He then goes into his office, locking the door as Emma simply shrugs to herself.
Room
In his room at Granny's Bed and Breakfast, David paces his room.
He looks out his window and sees that the clock tower reads 7:45.
Enchanted Forest. Past. King Midas's Castle
In King Midas's castle, King George and David present King Midas with the dragon's head, which has been turned to gold.
King George declares out to King Midas," He has done it. Everything you asked for and more. My son battled the dragon and prevailed."
King Midas then instructs his knights," Bring it to the palace. Put it between the chimera and the mapinguari."
As knights carry the dragon head away, King George says to David," We did it. We pulled it off."
" Yes." David nods before he asks," Now how much longer before I can return home?"
King George looks at him sternly and he dismisses him," That's a discussion not for now."
The two turns as King Midas announces out,
" From this day forth, may that beast's head be a reminder to us, of the valiant warrior who killed it. The bravest, most noble prince I have ever met. You have earned my utmost respect."
King George bows," We treasure that respect, King Midas, just as we respect your treasure."
King Midas nods," Yes, yes. You were promised gold, and gold you shall have, but I did not get to where I am by thinking small. I stand before you now because I dared to dream big. I was not just looking for a dragon slayer. I was looking for the strongest warrior in the land, a hero. Someone who could unite the kingdom. Someone I would be proud to call family. Bring her!"
At that moment, Princess Abigail enters the room as King Midas introduces her, " Gentleman, may I present my daughter Abigail? Beyond gold, beyond anything, I value her most. I promised her I would only give her hand in marriage when I could find a companion worthy of her, and now I have."
Princess Abigail turns to her father, asking, " He killed the dragon?"
King Midas nods. Princess Abigail looks at David from up to down before she haughtily comments out," I guess he'll do."
King Midas then says to David," And so, Prince James, I offer you my daughter's hand in marriage."
Surprised, David tries to refuse," King Midas, I am humbled by your generous offer, but I can't honestly say I'm..."
King George suddenly interrupts by laughing out," My son. Always so humble."
He pulls Prince Charming in and whispers in his ear in a rather sinister and menacing tone,
" If you say anything but yes, you will be responsible for the destruction of everyone and everything in our kingdom. You will marry this girl. Or I will kill you. I will kill your mother. I will turn that farm to ash. Do you understand me? I'll take your silence for wisdom. Follow it. I know you'll make the right decision."
Storybrooke. Present.
David walks along the sidewalk, looking at a map.
He seems to be lost. As he is busy trying to find the Toll Bridge, he heard a familiar voice calling to him," Mr. Nolan?"
" Oh!" David exclaims out, startled to see Regina behind him.
Regina quickly apologises," Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. I was just heading home from work and I saw you. Are you lost?"
David nods," Yeah. Yeah, kind of. I'm looking for the toll bridge."
" Ah, where you were found." Regina says.
" Yeah." David agrees as Regina asks," Trying to jog your memory?"
David shakes his head," No, I'm meeting someone."
" So you made your choice." Regina expresses out as David nods," Yes."
Regina sighs out," Well, I don't suppose I can convince you to change your mind?"
" I can't change what I feel." David states.
" No, of course not." Regina agrees before instructing him," Walk down the street to Mr. Gold's pawnshop. You'll find a fork in the road. Go left. It will take you to a hiking trail that leads directly to the bridge."
David thanks her," Thank you, uh, for understanding.
As he starts to walk away Regina calls out to him," Good luck, David. I hope you find what you're looking for."
Storybrooke. Present. Toll Bridge
Mary stood waiting for David at the toll bridge.
Storybrooke. Present. Outside Mr. Gold's pawnshop
David is searching for the toll bridge.
Having no other choice, enters Mr. Gold's pawnshop for directions.
" Hello? Hello?" David calls out as he enters the shop.
Suddenly, he spots the mobile that hung over Emma's crib in the Enchanted Forest, going over to look at it.
He has no idea why, but something about the mobile looks rather...familiar.
" Charming." David heard a voice from behind before turning around, seeing Mr. Gold standing behind him.
" I'm sorry?" David asks as Mr. Gold addresses the mobile," The mobile. Isn't it charming? Exquisitely designed. Masterfully crafted. I could get it down if you like."
David walks up to him, saying," No, no, no. I mean, it's very nice, but actually I'm looking for the toll bridge. The mayor said there was a fork in the road by your shop, but..."
Mr. Gold finishes his sentence," It seems Ms. Mills had led you astray."
David nods," Yeah. Yeah, you'd think the mayor would know her own town."
" One would think." Mr. Gold agrees, then he instructs David," Out of the door, turn right, two blocks, you'll find the trail. Can't miss it."
David thanks him," Thank you."
He starts to leave but right at that moment, he spots the windmill that used to be on the front lawn of his house.
" See something you like?" Mr. Gold asks. David turns around, pointing at the windmill before asking," Where did you get that?"
Mr. Gold looks at the windmill," That old thing? That's been gathering dust for forever."
David spins the windmill, saying," I think this belonged to me."
Mr. Gold raises an eyebrow," Really? Are you sure?"
David nods," Yes. I remember."
Enchanted Forest. Past.
David, now donning a Prince garb, rides a horse onto his mother's farm.
David dismounts the horse as he say," Mother."
Ruth looks up from her work, surprised to see her son standing before her," Oh, you're back. You're alive."
" Yes." David nods.
Ruth hugs David as he says," I did it."
Ruth then asks him," Are you hurt? I've been so worried."
" I'm fine, mother, really." David assures her as
Ruth expresses out, staring at his royal garb,
" Oh, look at you. Look at you. You... you look like a... like a... oh, you look like a prince! Come inside, I'll make us some supper. You should see the house, the farm. The king is going to take care of us. He's already started."
She points to David at the sight of Zatara and Zatanna using their magic to transform the farm.
She starts for the house but realizes that David isn't following.
Surprised, Ruth asks her son," What? What's wrong?"
David answers," Midas wants us to unite the kingdoms. By marrying me to his daughter."
Ruth stares at him in disbelief," What?"
" It makes the grain merchant's dowry look like sheep dung." David expresses out only for Ruth to say," No. You were right to turn down that offer as you must this one too. Every day you've been gone has shown me it was shameful of me to ever encourage you otherwise. Your freedom to choose is more important than anything. I'll give up the farm."
" No."" They can't force you."
" Yes they can," David insists before he explains," And because of our ruse Midas can never know who I am, which..."
Realisation dawns on Ruth as she sadly concludes," We can't ever see each other again."
" Yes." It was all David could answer.
Ruth shakes her head, saying to her son," Then don't do it. Run away."
David refuses," I can't. They will kill you."
Ruth sadly states," I lose you either way. At least I'll know you'll be happy."
David however, spoke up," I already accepted Midas's offer. I didn't come here for advice, Mother. I came her to say goodbye. There was too much at stake. I couldn't let the kingdom suffer on my account. I couldn't let them hurt you. You know, you were right about one thing. I can't have everything."
Ruth shakes her head sadly," Oh, my boy. My sweet, sweet boy."
She takes off her wedding ring, handing it to David as she instructs," Give this to your wife to be."
David quickly refuses," No, mother. I don't love her. I don't even know her. I can't take this."
" Just because you don't know her doesn't mean you won't grown to love her." Ruth states," True love follows this ring wherever it goes, my son. I had it with your father. I've had it as your mother. Now you will have it. Take it."
" No. No." David tries to refuse only for Ruth to put the ring in his hand, insisting," Take it, and I'll know, even if I never see you again, I'll know you'll find love. I'll know you'll be happy."
Storybrooke. Present. Toll Bridge
Mary Margaret waits for David at the toll bridge, twisting the same ring Ruth gave Prince Charming around her finger.
Right at that moment, David runs up to her, saying," You came."
Mary Margaret briefly looks at him, realising that he wasn't smiling and she points out," You sound surprised. In fact, you almost sound a bit disappointed."
" I remember." David says as Mary guesses," Kathryn?"
" Everything." David answers.
Mary Margaret inquires," And you love her?"
David sadly answers," I don't know. But I know I did. I remember how I felt, and I think I have to honor that."
Mary Margaret then asks," And everything that you said to me..."
David finishes," Is true. I do have feelings for you. Intense feelings. Feelings I don't quite understand."
Mary Margaret concludes," You're going back to her."
" It's the right thing to do." David reluctantly expresses out.
Feeling rather hurt and heartbroken, Mary Margaret scolds him in an accusing tone," The right thing to do was not to lead me on."
" I know." David nods.
Mary then concludes," So you've made your choice."
David looks down, sadly apologising to her," I'm sorry."
Mary Margaret sadly brushes him off," That's okay. I guess it just wasn't meant to be."
She turns around, quietly crying as she walks away from him.
Storybrooke. Present.
Emma is driving through the streets of Storybrooke on her night shift with Zatanna seated by her side when she sees someone exiting the window of Regina's house.
She pulls over, prompting Zatanna to ask," Huh? Why are we stopping?"
Without answering, Emma gets out of the car
She then strikes the figure in the stomach as they walk by. The figure is Sheriff Graham.
Staring at him in disbelief, Emma questions him," This is volunteering?"
Sheriff Graham tries to explain," Plans changed. Regina needed me to..."
" Sleep with her?" Emma interrupts though Graham tries to deny," No."
Emma then probes further," Why were you sneaking out the window?"
Sheriff Graham sighs out, realising that there is no point lying," Because she didn't want Henry to know."
Zatanna looks down, questioning Graham upon hearing what he said," You did this with Henry in the house?"
" He's sleeping. He doesn't know." Graham states.
Zatanna simply widens her eyes as Emma remarks out," Oh my god. I wish I was Henry right now. This is disgusting."
" Yeah. TMI." Zatanna adds.
" TMI?" Graham asks as Zatanna rephrases her sentence," Too Much Info."
" I really do work at an animal shelter." Graham tries to convince her only for
Emma to bitterly state," You can finish my shift. I'm done working nights."
She tosses the police cruiser keys to him and walks away.
Nolan House
David rings the doorbell to the Nolan house, waiting just as Kathryn answers the door.
Looking at her, David says," You were right. I did hate that windmill out front."
Kathryn stares at him," You remember. How much do you remember?"
" Enough." David answers," I know we weren't at a good place when I left. I know you thought I was leaving you, but I wasn't. I wanted to work things out, I just needed some time. Then I had my accident and got much more time than I expected. I'm sorry."
" I'm sorry too." Kathryn apologises.
David says," I know we have work to do. Let's see what happens."
Kathryn smiles as she accepts his proposal," I'd like that."
Enchanted Forest. Past.
David walks towards King Midas and King George with Princess Abigail.
King Midas then declares out," Let this mark the beginning of a new era, of a new kingdom, united and strong."
King George adds," An era of mutual prosperity."
King Midas turns to the pair, instructing them,
" Abigail, James. As I stay to work out the particulars of our land with King George, go to your new home at my palace. We'll be along shortly. And the celebration will be beyond your dreams."
Princess Abigail nods," Thank you, Daddy. I trust that you know best."
King George leads David to the side, saying to him," I'm glad you made the right decision, son."
He holds out his hand as David took it, shaking it as he thanks the King," Thank you, father."
" Come. I'm tired of waiting." David heard Abigail's calls before saying to King George,
" Well, then our journey shall begin. I thought we might take the scenic route."
King George then says to David," Smile son. You're on the road to true love. "
King George stood back, watching as David follows Princess Abigail.
Enchanted Forest. Past.
Up on a tree, Snow White watches Prince Charming and Princess Abigail's carriage roll by. Listening as Princess Abigail complains to
Prince Charming," I told you the troll road would have been quicker. Are you even listening to me?"
" Halt! There's something in the road. " One of the knights shouts as Snow White smiles, preparing to initiate her plan.
Storybrooke. Present. Granny's Diner
Mary Margaret sits alone in Granny's Diner, brooding over her horrible day when Dr. Whale enters and sits next to her.
" Rough day?" He asks.
Mary Margaret moodily tries to brush him off,
" Don't feel like talking."
Dr. Whale says," Come on. Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone when you don't give a crap what they think."
Mary Margaret then asks him," You ever walk into a situation where you know exactly what's going to happen? And then you go into it anyway. And then when what you're afraid of happens, you kick yourself because you should have known better. But that's just who you are, so you keep punishing yourself."
Dr. Whale shakes his head," No."
" How do you do that?" Mary asks as Dr. Whale answers," By never doing what's expected. It keeps life interesting. Can I buy you a drink?"
Mary Margaret accepts his offer," You can buy me two."
