"HAPPY BIRTHDAYYYY!" kaitlyn squealed, jumping into walker's arms. he beamed at her, practically radiating happiness. nobody loved their birthday more than walker scobell loved his.

"and happy my birthday to you too." he said as she giggled, readjusting the "birthday boy" crown leena had placed atop his head. 

"did you eat breakfast yet?" she asked. "di said something about us all going to pancake house, but we didn't have anything really planned for breakfast."

"pancake house sounds good." he nodded. "what are we doing after that?"

"trampoline park." kaitlyn grinned devilishly. it was all walker could do to keep from jumping up and down, squealing, and clapping his hands. he'd wanted to go to a trampoline park for AGES.

"open my present before everyone else gets here." she sat him down on the carpet in front of the fireplace and thrust a shiny blue bag into his hands

"wow, that's so sweet, you shouldn't have, no, really, i couldn't accept it." walker said, snatching the bag and starting to yank the tissue paper out. "there's so much in here!" he exclaimed.

"only the best for my boy." she said. then, she wrinkled her nose. "ew. that was so gross. i'm never saying that again."

"yeah, please don't." he agreed. "okay, card first."

"mama scobell raised you right." kaitlyn said, leaning forwards on her knees to get walker's reaction.

"oh, kaitlyn, this is so cool." walker said, tilting around the black-painted card with his name on it in bright yellow and little flecks of white in the background, like star wars and batman. he opened the card, which was so thick and filled with pages that it looked like a book. 

"i didn't want to make one of those corny congratulations books like on tiktok," she said anxiously. "it's just a bunch of little things. i made a collage on that page, and that other page has a picture of us, and that one is a letter from me to you when i liked you and i didn't know how to say it. it's kind of disorganized, but-" walker cut her off by kissing her. 

"i love it. i'm gonna take the pages apart and hang every single page of it on my wall."

kaitlyn's cheeks flushed pink with pride. "please do."

"oh my god, kaitlyn, you didn't." he reached into the bag and took out a little silver digital camera. "this is insane."

"you've been telling me you wanted one like dior's for forever. i assumed it was a hint."

"it wasn't." 

she stared at him.

"okay, it was. but it's amazing. god, you're amazing. i love it. i'm gonna take so many pictures of you on this thing." she giggled. he was overreacting a little. the camera was only about forty bucks, because he wanted one that looked like it was a digital camera instead of being perfect quality. he knew it was only around forty bucks, too - it was the fact that she'd picked up on all the hints and that she'd remembered that counted.

he pulled out some candy and a couple of other snacks that were his favorites, and then he drew out a little box. she snatched it from him. "i'm supposed to open it."

she cracked open the box. it was a ring the same shade of gold as kaitlyn's promise ring, and it was still discreet, but a little less dainty than hers. he stared up at her.

"i felt like we should both have promise rings. if you're making that promise to me by getting me one, i'm getting one for you to promise that to you."

he was unable to find the words to express how much it meant to him. instead of speaking, he leaned in and kissed her again, this time slower and full of more meaning. their cheeks were both flushed when he pulled away.

"i- it's so pretty. i love it. i love you. you're so pretty." they both laughed. she gave him another quick kiss after sliding it on his finger, then jumped up.

"come on. pancakes."

"and then trampoline park!" walker clapped his hands and jumped a little has he stood up.

"oh my god, you're such a little girl." kaitlyn imitated his hand clap and hop.

"ugh, shut up." he shoved her shoulder, and they walked out the door like that, talking and laughing, both happier than ever.
