"'twas the night before christmas, and all through the house, every creature was stirring, including kaitlyn's pantry mouse." leah began, giggling her way through each word. this was a tradition of theirs - a custom shortened night before christmas poem where they each wrote a few lines. 

"the percy jackson ornaments were hung on the tree with care, in hopes that big back santa claus could fit through the chimney there." walker continued as everyone snorted.

"the cast was sitting all snug on the couch, charlie hit walker and he said..." charlie improvised, punching walker hard on the arm. "OUCH!" walker exclaimed as everyone cackled with laughter.

"snow didn't fall, because global warming, and in twenty minutes, charlie would be snoring." dior said, poking fun at charlie's often early bedtime.

"we slowly went quiet, not even a peep, except aryan, who sang 'rolling in the deep'." kaitlyn giggled, aryan pretending to choke himself and smacking kaitlyn with a pillow.

"and suddenly it was time for bed. visions of presents danced in our head. we went to sleep, though no one was bored, and dreamed of eating the food that the refrigerator stored." charlie said. kaitlyn stood up, clapping. "okay, i wanna go to sleep so we can wake up super early and do presents."

"i agree." charlie stifled a yawn. "okay, dior and leah in leena's room, me and aryan in the basement, and kaitlyn and walker in walker's room- NO FUNNY BUSINESS, you two. it's a holy night. okay?"

kaitlyn didn't answer, smirking as she drifted up the stairs singing "siiiiiilent niiiiiight. hoooooooly niiiiiight."

"allllll is calllllllm alllllll is briiiiiight." walker continued, grinning as he followed kaitlyn up the stairs, pointing at her when he said "bright."

"GROSS!" aryan yelled, walking downstairs.

"'night, everyone!" leah called from leena's doorway a few minutes later.

"'night, lee!" kaitlyn called. "'night di, 'night grandpa, 'night aryan, 'night leena!"

"you could've just done a simple 'goodnight, everyone'." walker laughed, shrugging on a hoodie and kissing kaitlyn's forehead before flopping down in bed next to her. 

"but that's so impersonal!" kaitlyn argued, turning off the lamp before rolling over on her side to face him. he traced her features, illuminated by the moonlight streaming through the window, with his finger. she smiled as it tickled her face.

"kaitlyn?"

"yeah?"

"did you-" he cleared his throat a little bit. "the instagram post. i mean, i know it was a joke. but i could really see myself-" he drew in a breath. "i mean, one day. someday."

"someday what?" 

"the last slide. the wedding rings."

"oh."

he took another deep breath. "i'm all in, kaitlyn. i'm serious. i've never wanted anyone else. i doubt i'll ever want anyone else again. if, someday, a long time in the future but, i mean, not that long in the future, we both wanted to... i mean, i would."

"would what?" kaitlyn asked, holding back a smile.

"marry you. and i think i probably will." it rushed out of him quickly, the words tumbling over each other like he'd been holding them back for a while. she covered her mouth with her hand in shock, eyes glimmering with happiness.

"i just- i mean, i'm obviously not asking you that question now. we're about to turn sixteen. but i just want to make sure that you're in it for a long time too. i'm not asking you to make a giant commitment. i'm just making sure, or just asking, if you- i don't even know what my question is." kaitlyn laughed a little. 

"it's just... if you think you just like me for now, or that this is just a little teenage thing that'll probably end a couple of months or years down the line, i don't think we should do this. it'll hurt too much when it's over." he said, avoiding her eyes. she nodded, thinking for a second, then took his face in her hands, making him look at her.

"i'm all in, too, walker. i have never been more sure about anyone or anything in my life." she stated calmly. "i love you so much. and it's so easy. it's like breathing." she grinned. "and, you know, you breathe till you're dead."

"is that a metaphor?" he laughed, trying to cover the tears of relief in his eyes. he'd been struggling with this all day, this information that if it wasn't going to last, it needed to end.

"awww." she kissed his tear as it fell. 

"love you. so much. forever and ever. today, tomorrow, always." he said, kissing her gently one last time before rolling over on the other side.

they both fell asleep smiling.

SORRY FOR THE SPORADIC (vocab wordddd) UPDATES i have been so busy but i love this chapter i hope it makes up for it!

next chapter will be christmas day with cute little hauls and perhaps a big gift from walker to kaitlyn 🤔🤔 any guesses???
