"it's such a nice day out. we should actually do something." said leah, who was a little stir-crazy. they'd been in walker's basement for three days, and while it had been amazingly fun to have a whole group sleepover, she was now "bored as hell and needed some vitamin D." 

kaitlyn had caught some kind of little cold and wasn't too keen on the idea of going out, but she pointed out an ad she saw on tiktok while scrolling. "hey, what if we go to the fair? there's one a couple miles away that's supposed to have world famous cotton candy AND a slingshot, and it closes at the end of this week."

"i've always wanted to go on a slingshot!" walker said, jumping up. "let's go."

they group stared at the bottom of the stairs.  

"i wonder what the world is like out there." aryan whispered dramatically.

"i wonder if there even is a world out there." kaitlyn responded quietly. "or if it's all been destroyed in the apocalypse." 

"i wonder if my parents are still out there somewhere." dior said forlornly.

"i had to leave everything i loved behind to go into hiding." charlie said hoarsely.

"i had to leave the woman i loved... oh wait, no i didn't." walker grinned at kaitlyn, who rolled her eyes at him for not being committed to the bit.

"OH MY GOD GUYS MOVE YOUR FAT BUTTS OUT OF THE WAY I NEED NON-PREPACKAGED FOOD AND SUNLIGHT RIGHT NOW!" leah screeched, sprinting up the basement stairs into the living room as everyone else dissolved in a fit of giggles. they spread out throughout the house to grab what they needed - keys, hoodie, snack, lip gloss - and walker dragged kaitlyn up to his room, kissing her as soon as they were inside. 

"i'm gonna get you sick." she pulled away and grabbed a kleenex from his bedside table. 

"it's fine, then we can be sick together." he smiled at her, grabbing a fresh pair of jeans from his closet.

"nuh-uh. i'm not getting you sick, you have to film this month." she wagged her finger at him.

"ugh, whatever. wanna match?" he held out a gray hoodie to match his sweater.

"yes, please. i'll wear jeans, too." they changed quickly and walked downstairs. 

"okay, aryan and walker with me, kaitlyn leah and dior in leena's car. let's go." charlie clapped his hands. "such a dad." leah whispered as kaitlyn giggled.

"goodbye, my love... see you in another life." walker walked backwards and waved goodbye dramatically, walking straight into charlie's car. "ow!"

"that better not have left a dent from your giant head." charlie said, opening the door and shoving walker in like cops do to the people they arrest. kaitlyn pouted and waved goodbye, tracing an imaginary tear falling down her cheek.

"kaitlyn, i don't know about you, but that 'my love' thing just gave me the biggest ick." leena said, fake gagging as they piled into her car.

"well, i would hope so, considering he's your brother." dior pointed out as they laughed.

they bought (and ate) their weight in cotton candy, funnel cake, pretzels, ice cream, pizza, slushies, chicken wings, and basically every fair food ever. walker and aryan spent twenty minutes trying to beat each other on the little basketball machine, and leena managed to win some kind of contest in which she won a baby piglet and had to beg the worker of the booth - who didn't speak english, but they couldn't figure out what language he was speaking - to let them give up the pig, exaggeratedly miming their dog eating the pig until the guy burst out laughing and let them leave. (they were being secretly recorded. the guy's name was arthur and he spoke fluent english.)

"okay, slingshot now. and don't even try to say no, because i just won you like five teddy bears."

"fiiine." she let him drag her over to the giant flashing machine and into the long line. she was stuffed from all the food and could barely stay upright for the whole line, so she knew in the back of her mind that she shouldn't be going on the machine, and she would've rather been back with dior playing whack-a-mole, but she didn't want to do to him what he'd done to her on halloween. she wasn't going to be the one who forgot about something he really wanted to do just because of an idea she had.

twenty minutes later, she was hunched over a trash can throwing up.

"never. again." she said between retches. "that was awful."

"that and all the food you ate." dior said soothingly, holding her hair back. she'd managed to make it back to the group and to yank dior away to help her before throwing up. she knew there would come a day when she would be comfortable enough for walker to see her throw up, but today was not that day.

"i hate rollercoasters. i don't know why i even thought i could go on this one."

"because you wanted to please your boyfriend, which i totally get, because a. you love him and b. you guys just started dating a few months ago, but you really need to know your limits, babe." she stroked the side of kaitlyn's face. "i'm sure he's worried sick about you and wouldn't want to put you through this again."

walker, having no idea the turmoil kaitlyn was going through, was having a blast playing the water gun game with charlie. "i'm gonna kick your ass!" charlie shouted over the cheers of passerby clamoring for a photo.

"i'd say the same about you, gramps, but you're all skin and bones at this point. you don't even have an ass to kick." charlie fought a chuckle as he aimed his water gun at the little round circles and did his best to get the water through the hole. 

the girl behind the counter, a blonde with big blue eyes, watched intently. walker scobell, her celebrity crush, at her fair, at her booth. this was the chance she'd been waiting for. she had to play this right. 

"excuse me?" she said. "hey, i don't know what all those people want with  you guys, but could you get them to go away? parts of the sensors of this game are based on the sound of where the water hits, and if them shouting messes with a game, we could get our booth taken away because it would get accused of being rigged. and this is kind of my job, so..."

"oh yeah. sorry." walker and charlie turned around and asked the fans to meet them by the merry-go-round for pictures once they were done with their games.

"thanks." the girl said, smiling. "what did they want with you, anyway?"

"uh... me and walker here, we're on this show, so people wanted photos with us, i guess." charlie explained, a little incredulous. this girl was the spitting image of most of walker's fans. no way a fifteen- or sixteen-year-old girl nowadays hadn't heard of walker.

"oh, what show?" she asked. "i'm so sorry if this is rude. i don't have tiktok or anything so i didn't recognize you guys. is it something marvel-related? i'm obsessed with deadpool right now."

"no way, you like deadpool?" walker said. his eyes lit up. "those are my favorite movies."

"i know, right? deadpool 2 is my favorite. my dad is actually friends with ryan reynolds, so i got to go on set once." she said. the part about her dad being friends with him was true, but they really weren't that close. she'd never been on any set before.

"i love ryan! i was in a movie with him once."

"wait, no way, are you the adam project kid?"

"yeah, i am." walker shrugged modestly, smiling.

"dude. you're hilarious! my little brother loves that movie. do you mind if i get a picture? for him?"

"sure, go ahead." walker smiled and did a thumbs-up for the camera.

"sorry, i didn't get your name. whenever me and my family talk about the adam project, we just call you adam." 

"oh, my name's walker. what's yours?"

"aleena. nice to meet you!"

"oh, that sounds like my sister's name. she's right here. aleena, meet leena."

leena did a little wave. aleena looked leena up and down with a bored expression, then turned back to walker. "hey, kinda random, but are you going to ryan's thanksgiving dinner party? my family and i were invited, so we might be able to go."

"i think we'll probably go! i might see you there." walker waved and made as if to walk away.

"oh! um, could i get your number so we can confirm if you're going? i don't wanna go if there aren't going to be any other kids." walker hesitated. he knew something was up, but if this girl knew ryan, she was practically family. and it would be nice to have more kids at the thanksgiving thing. 

"okay, sure." he relented, scribbling his number on a piece of paper. "i'll text you if i go."

"okay, so great meeting you!" she called after them as they walked away. success.

"so that was weird." leena said, charlie nodding in assent.

"what about it was weird?"

"um, a girl asked for your number and you gave it to her while fully having a girlfriend you're in love with? that's kind of weird. and she definitely knew who you were."

"oh. maybe. but if she's going to ryan's..."

"oh my god, walker, you're so stupid. please go talk to your girlfriend who was just throwing up because of the ride you made her go on instead of giving your number to random girls."

"she was throwing up?" all thought of aleena left walker's mind as he rushed to kaitlyn's aid. but as he helped her clean up, speaking to her gently and apologizing for making her go on the ride, he thought about what leena had. sure, it was a little weird. and aleena was pretty. but he probably wouldn't be going to ryan's for thanksgiving anyways, and besides, kaitlyn was the only girl for him. now, tomorrow, and forever.

"now, tomorrow, and forever, huh?" she repeated, smiling up at him. luckily, he'd only said that part out loud. she looked gorgeous despite her fatigue and the fact that she'd spent the last twenty minutes throwing up. 

"yeah. pretty much." he kissed her forehead and pulled her up. "you up for a few more games?"

kaitlynbright never going on a slingshot again. i say that like it's a joke but it really is not.
