"KAITLYN!"

"WALKER!" kaitlyn leaned over the doorstep and fell into his arms. "awww, did you bring me food?" she peered into the wrinkled chick-fil-a bag.

"yeah, but i kind of ate half of it on the way here..." he said, pretending to look guilty.

kaitlyn smacked his arm. "you're a fatass."

"kidding. half of it was for me?"

she laughed, then said, "we're watching never have i ever today."

"we watched that last week!" he protested. 

"there are four seasons, stupid."  

"bleh bleh bleh. you're the stupid one." walker stuck his tongue out at her. he knew it wasn't the most mature comeback, so he scooped her up in his arms - with absolutely no difficulty, kaitlyn noted - and carried her over to the couch as she pretended to kick and tell him to let her go, even though she secretly loved it. he tossed her on the couch and flopped down beside her.

"we should go do something. i love watching stuff with you, but that's all we've done for the past week."

she sighed. "i know, but it's gonna start pouring rain in ten minutes. and i hate going out in rainy weather." 

he stretched and put an arm around her. she snuggled into him. "we could bake something?"

"yeah, in a minute. i'm comfortable." she buried her head in his chest. they were both wearing thick sweatshirts, so she was extra cozy.

"you're heart's beating really fast." she told him softly.

"yeah, it always does when we're... this close." he let his eyes linger on her, then cleared his throat. "i always hoped you didn't notice."

"i don't think i ever did because mine was going just as fast." she looked up at him with adoring eyes, making his heart melt. 

he kissed her forehead. "do you know how much time i spent trying to convince myself that this was normal?"

"what?"

"this. us. being this close all the time. all i ever wanted was to be close to you, and i told myself it was because you were my best friend." 

he thought back fondly to their will-they-won't-they-stage, momentarily forgetting how painful it was to him. he would do it a million times over again just to be with her, but every day felt like his heart was being pulled through a paper shredder. he'd had no hope that she would like him back, and after she'd blatantly rejected him post-surgery, he'd cried for days. the first time he'd cried in forever. he'd only been caught once. it wasn't just that she didn't like him back - it was that he thought he'd lost her forever.

"yeah, i did the same thing. and i justified it to everyone else, too. the next time we see two people acting like this, we're calling it out." she joked.

"hey, our friends tried to tell us." he laughed. "i don't think anyone in our same situation is gonna listen if we tried to convince them that they'll end up together.

"yeah." she said. then she pushed herself up and clapped her hands. "okay! baking!"

"CAN WE PUT ON LEGO BATMAN IN THE BACKGROUND?"

she rolled her eyes. "fine. no spilling flour again."

"maybe i will just so i can actually kiss you this time." he winked. for once, kaitlyn was the one left momentarily speechless.
