3: Midnight Dance

"...You're right." Marcy sniffled, looking down at the empty void below her. "Why would she love me...she's a brave, kind, and sweet girl...while I'm just the awkward coward who wanted to imprison her best friends just so I wouldn't have to leave..."

"Wow. You broke FAST." The Night snorted as he floated around Marcy. "Normally? It takes a few days before they start to break. I'm glad to see a new change of pace."

He then set a thumb on her forehead and forced her head upwards, making her face his eyes. Then, The Night closed them.

A few seconds later? 11 more eyes grew across her face and all 13 of them stared at her with their wicked orange glow.

"Let's see what else your demented mind cooked up."

"Hey, Anna-Banana!" Marcy cried as she walked over to Anne, with the house having just been destroyed by Grime's Volcakeno. "How are you holding up?"

"Well, considering Sasha's actually making some progress AND we just beat a giant evil cake filled with hornets?" Anne laughed. "I'd say pretty well. Just another day in Amphibia!"

Marcy smiled. "Yeah. I still can't believe this place exists."

"I still can't believe we're so close to getting home...I hope we can visit here. Maybe King Andrias will let us keep the box and we can travel from world to world!"

"That's a fantastic idea, Anne!" Marcy exclaimed. "We can spend most of our days in that human world, while we do the real fun here! Adventuring and fighting off monsters!"

"A dream come true for you, huh?" Anne laughed.

Marcy laughed. "In ways you can't imagine!"

Anne smiled before looking up at the sky, the moon and the stars. "One thing though...? Everything still looks beautiful at night."

Marcy faced Anne instead of the sky and her cheeks went rosy. "Y-Yeah. The sight's nice, isn't it?"

Anne nodded. "Definitely. Kinda sucks we gotta rebuild the house again though."

"Hey! We can easily camp under the stars!" Marcy suggested.

"Oh, yeah! Remember when we were little?"

"We thought a bear attacked us but it was just your neighbor's dog!" Marcy laughed. "I think he peed on the tent."

"Gross!" Anne laughed. "Oh, and...I forgot to say. You look really nice."

Marcy's cheeks became rosy again and she rubbed the back of her neck. "Awww, Anne! You don't have to say that just to be nice."

"What? No! I mean that! You look really nice! Beautiful even!" Anne exclaimed. "I'm almost convinced you're not the clumsy Marcy I knew back home."

Marcy laughed. "Yeah. I've really grown out here."

"Yeah. And I'm proud of you for that, Mar-Mar." Anne smiled, holding Marcy's hand.

Marcy rubbed her thumb across Anne's, gently squeezing her hand in return. "So, I think the Plantars aren't gonna be home for a while since they went out for construction supplies!"

"Not to mention Chuck. He's shockingly VERY handy during this kind of thing." Anne laughed. "You would not believe how many times the house gets destroyed."

Marcy laughed again before she blushed. "H-Heh, more times than I could count is my best guess...b-but as I was saying...since we're dressed all nice and a-all that...would you maybe...want to...hold hands and move around?"

Anne became confused before realizing this as an offer to dance. She smiled softly and stood from the log she was sitting on. She then did a quick curtsy and held out her hand. "May I have this dance, Mar-Mar?"

Marcy slowly took Anne's hand and stood, gently and slowly wrapping her arm around her waist. "Y-You definitely can, Anna-Banana."

"I will never get sick of that nickname." Anne smiled, wrapping her arms slowly around Marcy's neck. "Now remember, this isn't freestyle cause I know you're not great with that. Just follow my lead."

"Uhhh, kinda? Heh." Marcy said, embarrassed.

"Move here." Anne said slowly. "Then here. And then here. Just keep going with the flow."

Marcy looked down at her feet, wanting to make sure she didn't trip or slide against the grass and dirt.

Anne smirked a little and lifted Marcy's face by her chin. "Just keep your eyes on me."

Marcy smiled softly, looking softly into Anne's eyes as they slow danced. She almost forgot how much of a klutz she was, but the worry of her falling or tripping completely disappeared.

"You're doing amazing!" Anne exclaimed.

Marcy's eyes widened. "I-I am?"

"It's been a full 3 minutes, and you haven't tripped once!" Anne smiled. "Okay. Let's try something else!"

"W-Wait, right now?" Marcy asked sheepishly.

Anne's smile turned soft again. "Relax, Marcy. I'll walk you through it. Lift your arm up, but don't let go of my hand." She instructed, slipping her arm away from the back of Marcy's neck.

Marcy then lifted her arm up, also holding Anne's up.

"Good! Now just twirl me around. Slowly." Anne said.

Marcy gulped, not wanting to accidentally push her down into the grass, but she did as instructed.

"Great!" Anne cried as she did a full twirl, and they returned to slow dancing.

"I-I did it!" Marcy cried, cheering. "I finally danced- WHOA!"

She began to stumble backwards, but Anne quickly grabbed her arm and pulled her back. "You good, girl?"

"Y-Yeah! Absolutely!" Marcy giggled. "Cheering for later?"

"Cheering for later." Anne nodded before hearing Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly come back with Chuck, all of them hopping off Bessie.

"We're back home, Anne!" Sprig cried as he hopped over, but then saw the two dancing, or at least were. "Wait...were you two...moving around slowly in a circle?"

"Yeah! Anne taught me how to slow dance!" Marcy smiled.

"Which you can now successfully do!" Anne said, playfully tapping both of her shoulders with her arm, like a king would when knighting a, well, knight.

Marcy laughed. "I dub myself Mistress Marcy!"

"I dub thee that as well." Anne said in a fake British accent, both of the girls laughing.

Sprig blinked. "I don't get it. It wasn't that funny."

"Really? I thought it was pretty clever." Anne said with a shrug.

"Hmmm, clever and funny are different things!" Sprig added.

"Touché. But this was nice, Marcy! Hope we can do it again!" Anne smiled.

"A-Again? Really! Y-You'd want that?" Marcy asked.

"Yeah! When we get home that is!" Anne laughed...before she opened her eyes. They were orange. "You did trap me here after all, so surely you know how to get home!"

Marcy's eyes widened and she stepped back. "A-Anne...?"

She then felt Sprig hop behind her. She turned and saw he also had the orange eyes.

"Makes me wonder if you think that dancing with her solves anything! Of course, that'd be ridiculous!" Sprig laughed.

Anne's orange eyes began to glow brightly in the darkness and her voice was replaced with The Night's. "Because even the buffoon you fell in love with would realize forgiving you would be trying to forget what you did...which is...IMPOSSIBLE."
