Understanding Willow

Hunter and Willow were walking around the hallway, Flapjack on Hunter's shoulder. Apparently there were some classes at Hexside that a person from any track could attend, so naturally Hunter was curious. The two stopped at Hunter's locker, some students fighting over a red butterfly invite to Skara's birthday party.

"So in photo class you can make pictures of your actual memories?" Hunter asked, fascinated, opening his locker. "Wow! Surely thats pretty dangerous though, right? Making memories into a physical object is pretty risky."

"Yeah, it can be - but I'm sure Hexside has some pretty good security to make sure no one tampers with the photos." Willow said. Just then, Skara, Boscha and Amity passed by, Boscha putting her hands to her eyes to mimic glasses.

"I can't believe she'd even hang out with him! It's just embarrassing." Boscha laughed. "'Oh, look at me! I'm going on a date with ferns!'"

Skara laughed as the three passed, and Willow frowned at the ground. Hunter noticed.

"Hey, that could be anyone." Hunter said, trying to comfort her.

"Solid Willow impression, Boscha!" Skara said. "Amity, weren't you friends with Willow?"

The three of them stopped walking.

"I'm a Blight. We only associate with a select few." Amity said. "Keep annoying me though, I'm happy to select fewer." And she walked off.

"Oh, I coulda sworn that you guys hung out." Skara said, her and Boscha following.

Willow sighed, as Hunter put a hand on her shoulder.

Hunter and Willow were in a darkroom-like classroom with other pairs of students, all of them sitting front of undeveloped photos.

"Okay, lets get another one..." Hunter said, grabbing a pair of tweezers.

"Be careful with my brain!" Willow said, as Hunter pulled a photo out of Willow's ear with the tweezers. Willow rubbed her ear as he hung the photo on a wire.

"As you work, note that some prints have greater clarity than others. These are moments that invoke strong emotional response." The photo teacher said. "But, if you damage the prints, you'll damage the memories themselves! Be very careful."

One of the photos developed, showing Willow on a chair, blushing a bit, with a band-aid on her cheek, and with wavy and poofy hair.

"Aw, cute." Hunter said, then his ears went red when he realized what he'd just said. "I mean-"

"Y-yeah I was adorable." Willow said, her face going red too. She cleared her throat, trying to change the subject. "Oh, look! The other pictures are coming."

Hunter turned to see the other photos developing - Willow being pushed on a swing by her dads - Willow feeding a spider demon - Willow and her dads at what looked to be a winter holiday - and finally, Amity hugging Willow at a birthday party. Hunter widened his eyes at the last photo.

"Ugh." Willow grunted, turning away.

"You mentioned that you and Amity used to be friends. Would you feel better talking about it?" Hunter asked. Willow sighed.

"No, I'd rather do this." Willow said, flipping the photo around. "That's my motto after all. 'Out of sight, out of mind'."

The bell screamed and rang. Students got up from their seats and began leaving.

"I understand you don't want to talk about it, but if you told me what happened, maybe I could help fix things." Hunter said.

"Hunter, I get it, but I don't want you to do that. Okay?" Willow said. "Now, let's get to lunch."

Hunter nodded and followed her out of the classroom, but not before flipping the photo back around.

The two approached Gus in the cafeteria, who was standing in front of a corkboard titled 'WHO TO INTERVIEW'.

"Hey Gus. What are you doing?" Hunter asked.

"My interview for journalism class is due tomorrow!" Gus said, worried. "I'm supposed to choose someone 'interesting, accomplished and noteworthy'. People aren't meant to be all those things! Curse your need for perfection, Gus!"

"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find someone to interview." Hunter said, passing Gus some apple blood. He turned to Willow, and his eyes widened. "Whoa. Willow, are you okay?"

Willow was sweating. "When did it get so hot?"

She drank some water, exhaling steam. She poured herself another cup, then just doused herself with the pitcher, releasing more steam. Gus sipped at his apple blood, confused, while Hunter was concerned. Flapjack chirped. She took off her glasses, cleaning them as steam continued to come from her ears, but when she put them back on her pupils dilated until her eyes were completely black.

"Uhh, hi! I'm Willow! Remind me of your names?" She said. Hunter frowned.

"This is serious journalism, Willow. Clowning around will get you nowhere." Gus said.

"I'm - I'm serious! Who - who are you?" Willow asked.

"I'll admit, this amnesia spin has piqued my interest." Gus said. Hunter paled as he came to a realization.

"Gus, she legitimately lost her memory! Someone must have done something to the photos!" Hunter said worriedly.

The two of them immediately burst into the photo classroom, Willow following drunkenly behind them.

"Hexside Free Press! What's going on here?" Gus said. Hunter gasped, seeing Amity desperately trying to blow out the flames.

"...Hi!" Amity said nervously.

"You destroyed Willow's memories?!" Hunter yelled. Flapjack chirped.

"I-I saved as many as I could!" Amity said. She held up a picture of Willow's awkward hair phase, another one behind it. An ember burnt both of them to ash, and Amity and Hunter watched the ashes fall.

"Ugh! Why would they make memories so flammable?" Amity said, frustrated.

Hunter just gave Amity a withering glare, as Willow was acting really weirdly at the doorway to the classroom.

The four of them were at the Owl House, Amity looking around the living room.

"So this is the Owl House." Amity noted.

"Yes." Hunter said coldly, still rightfully angry at her for tampering with Willow's memories.

"And you... sleep here?" Amity asked, ignoring his frustrated tone. Hunter just rolled his eyes, not answering.

"So, you set Willow's memories on fire and erased everything. Even minor damage can have huge effects!" Eda said.

Willow walked into the couch, where King was sleeping. "Ahh, a chair for sitting!"

She flopped face front on the couch, doing a handstand while trying to sit, and then flopped upside down.

"Yep, her brain's burned up real good. Damage like that can change everything about a person. Willow may never be the same." Eda said. Hunter's eyes widened.

"No! There has to be some way to fix this!" Hunter said quickly. Willow finally sat properly.

"I got it!" She said, then looked at King. "Ooh, a furry fruit! I'm gonna peel it."

She picked King up, and King tried to wriggle free as she tried to do so. "What? What is happening?!"

"Nap time." Eda said. She cast a spell, putting Willow to sleep.

"Sleep spell..." King said with a yawn.

"I didn't cast it on you." Eda said.

"Eda, is there anything we can do?" Hunter asked worriedly.

"There is one way, but it's terribly dangerous and partially illegal." Eda paused. "So you're in the right place! I'll send you into her mind to fix the damage."

"Into her... mind...?" Hunter asked, his cheeks and ears going red.

"It won't be easy. You have a lot to fix in there, 'cause its a mess! Yep, whoever did this to Willow showed unbelievable disregard for her safety, downright despicable." Eda said. Hunter looked over at Amity with a glare.

"Agreed." He growled. Amity looked away guiltily.

"Anyways, Hunter, who's going inside with you?" Eda asked. Hooty opened the door.

"Maybe I can help! I'm pretty good at getting stuck inside people's heads!" Hooty said.

"This is someone's brain, not a night club!" Eda said, spinning a spell circle and closing the door. "Two max."

Hunter looked at Gus, who was pacing in front of his corkboard.

"I'm running out of time. Ugh. I'm in total free fall!" Gus said, looking at a pile of books. "Must I turn to forbidden sources?" The books growled and he yelped, falling to the ground.

"Gus has a lot on his plate. As much as I really don't want to..." Hunter sighed. "Amity, you're gonna have to come with me."

"Willow might not want me in there." Amity said.

"I don't either! But you made this mess, so you have to help fix it." Hunter said, glowering at her.

Amity paused, then sighed. "Okay, I'll do what I can."

Eda drew a spell circle around them and summoned a bell. Hunter took it. Flapjack chirped, nuzzling Hunter's cheek before flying onto Eda's shoulder.

"When you're done, ring that and I'll cast you back. Oh, and keep an eye out for her 'Inner Willow'. She's the gatekeeper of emotions and memory. She might help ya." Eda said, lifting her hand.

The spell circle around Hunter and Amity produced a light that encased them.

"Now, here we go!" Eda yelled, as Hunter and Amity screamed and disappeared into the yellow light of the spell. Eda directed it to Willow, still fast asleep.

Hunter and Amity landed in a black void, before light appeared and burst forward. The two of them shielded their eyes, and when the light dimmed they saw they were standing in a forest - each tree growing around a dark picture frame. Hunter and Amity looked around and started walking.

"Where's her Inner Willow? Do you really think it'll help?" Amity asked.

"I don't know. We'll just have to start fixing stuff on our own." Hunter said. He walked over to a frame and blew some dust off and coughed. The picture showed a fort on a beach. Hunter reached towards it with his hand, but it just passed through. He poked it a few more times.

"I think I found something." Hunter called to Amity. She headed over, poking it just as he'd done, before he rolled his eyes and just pushed her in. She yelped, landing on the other side, Hunter climbing in after her and landing on his feet.

"What was that for?" Amity asked with a glare, getting and brushing herself off.

"You know why." Hunter said. "Anyway we need to focus."

They looked around at the memory they were in, but it was in grayscale and burning. They were at a grassy beach with a dock and sign that read 'LAKE LACUNA'.

"Lake Lacuna! This is where Willow and I took swimming lessons! The ash must be from the fires." Amity said. She gasped. "Our fort! In the dunes!"

The two ran up to the fort, as Amity started taking things off of it.

"One time Willow wanted to play hooky from our swim lessons, so we built this!" Amity said, shoving a plank into Hunter's hands. "We knew the swim teacher would be on the prowl, but Willow said she'd protect us with an illusion spell." She looked at the fort with pride.

"Isn't the Boiling Isles surrounded by boiling waters, though? How would you guys swim through that without getting burnt?" Hunter asked. Amity didn't answer, concentrated on the fort.

"Something's missing..." She said, staring down at it. She looked down, swiping sand off a small flag that said 'A+W'. Amity smiled at it fondly before putting it in a small flower pot tied to the top of the fort. "There."

The memory's color returned.

"So by fixing the fort we fix the memories?" Hunter said. "Thought it'd be more complicated than that. Not complaining though."

The memory started playing in color, a young Amity and Willow laughing and entering the fort.

"Ugh! The seagulls are back again!" Young Amity said.

"Don't worry, I'll get rid of them!" Young Willow said, casting a spell. Instead of getting rid of the seagulls, however, she got rid of the fort.

"Willow!" Amity said.

"I'm sorry, I thought I was getting better!" Willow said. The swim teacher spotted Amity and Willow and dragged them back to class.

"Willow was... a late bloomer." Amity said.

"So what? You just up and left her?" Hunter said, as the two left the meemory. Amity stayed quiet, and Hunter sighed. "Fine. Let's just do the next memory."

He spotted the birthday party photo. "We should save the important memories first. Since you seemed really adamant about burning that one, we should do it first." Hunter said. Amity paled.

"Wait! Uhh. You want important moments?" Amity asked, and pointed towards the awkward hair phase memory. "This one might be about... using magic for the first time!" She smiled nervously.

Hunter turned. "You're acting suspicious. But fine, we'll do that one first if you really want to." And he headed inside with Amity.

Hunter and Amity had fixed a memory about Amity and Willow riding on the 'Roller Ghoster'. Young Willow screamed.

"I don't feel so good!" She yelled.

"We don't need to see how this one ends..." Hunter said, exiting the memory with Amity.

"Yeah, Willow threw up a lot that day. That's when you knew she was havin' fun." Amity said. After a few moments she looked downcast.

"Are you okay?" Hunter asked after some hesitation. Amity sighed.

"Yeah, I just... I can't believe I almost erased all of this. I really messed things up." She said.

"Yeah, you did." Hunter said. He paused, then sighed. "But, you helped fix your mess, so I guess you made up for it. Just don't do anything like this ever again, okay?"

"I won't." Amity said. After a few moments she elbowed him. "You're really protective of your friends, huh?"

"Yeah... I didn't have any friends back in the human realm. They saw my eyes and ears and called me a freak." Hunter said, looking at the ground.

"Well, you're in a world that accepts you now. Pointy ears and weirdly colored eyes are just scratching the surface of the weird things here." Amity said. Hunter smiled.

"Thanks." He said. "You know, you kind of sound like Luz saying that."

Amity tensed at the mention of Luz. "Oh... uh... about that..." She suddenly gasped and pointed behind him. "What's that?"

Hunter looked to see nothing, before turning back, confused. "There isn't anything there...?"

"I thought I saw something..." Amity said.

Finally, after what felt like ages, they'd managed to fix all the memories except for one - the birthday party memory.

"Alright, only one more memory left to fix." Hunter said. "The one you're suspiciously avoiding."

"Me? Avoid? No." Amity said, sweating nervously. "But let's skip it! Where's Eda's bell?"

Amity tried to reach for the bell, but Hunter stopped her. "Amity, we have to fix all the memories. Unless... there's something in there you don't want me to see."

Amity crossed her arms defensively.

"Look, I'm not here to judge, I'm just here to help Willow." Hunter said.

Amity sniffed. "Is something... burning?"

Hunter sniffed, smelling it too. Both of them turned to see pink flames destroying the memories they'd just fixed. A pink, flaming monster ran towards the two, who both screamed.

"Hide, hide, hide!" Amity yelled, dragging Hunter behind a tree. The pink monster jumped into the photo, and watched as the photo reignited.

"That thing is burning up all the memories!" Hunter said.

"Please call Eda, I don't wanna be here when it comes out!" Amity said.

Hunter pulled out the bell and rang it multiple times, but nothing happened.

"Why won't she answer?" Amity asked.

"Yeah... she's not super reliable." Hunter said. The flames behind the duo grew. "Run!"

Amity yelped, and the two ran away as the flame monster emerged. It went into several other photos.

"Why is it destroying all the photos?" Amity asked.

"I don't know - but some of them are untouched." Hunter's eyes widened when he came to a realization. "Amity, it's only going after the memories you're in!"

The monster turned and locked eyes on Amity.

"What?" Amity said.

The monster growled, burned brighter, and ran towards them.

"Run! I have an idea!" Hunter said, shoving Amity to the beach photo.

"We can't go in there, I'm in there!" Amity protested.

"Just trust me!" Hunter said, shoving Amity inside. He checked to see if the monster was following them before heading inside too.

Hunter started drawing an ice glyph in the sand, while Amity watched. He slammed down on it, summoning an ice pillar. The monster leaped through the photo and landed on the pillar as it grew, sliding it into the lake. The two looked around the pillar.

A shadow stood in the lake, surrounded by fog. The fog cleared, revealing Willow, pink flames around her. She looked at Hunter and Amity.

"Are you... the Inner Willow?" Amity asked. The Inner Willow's eyes turned completely purple.

"I was. Love, sadness, fear." She said, walking forward and leaving behind pink flames in the sand. "I used to be a being of all emotions. But ever since you set Willow's mind on fire, all I can feel is anger!"

Her hands ignite in flames, and around them, the memory started to burn again. A tree was set on fire, then another, and then the fort. The flag burned to ash. Hunter and Amity watched the destruction in horror.

"Please! Stop!" Hunter said.

"But Amity wanted this." Inner Willow said, summoning the birthday party photo and grabbing it with a hand made of fire. "Every moment she touched, I'm going to burn."

"You're just hurting Willow. Why are you doing this?" Amity asked. Inner Willow got in Amity's face.

"Still haven't figure it out, yet? Then I'll show you!" She threw Amity into the photo, then turned to Hunter. "You wanted to know everything, right? Then come take a trip down memory lane."

"Not sure I like the sound of-" Hunter said, but screamed as Inner Willow grabbed him and tossed him inside as well.

Amity bounced off a bed and landed on her feet, realizing that they were in her childhood bedroom. Hunter fell down and crashed into something, getting up and rubbing his head.

"Where are we?" Hunter asked. Inner Willow floated into the memory.

"You said I was hurting Willow? I was just finishing what you started!" She said. With a bell toll and a flash of flame, the memory started playing.

The door to Young Amity's room opened, and both young Amity and Young Willow enter.

"You have to get out, Willow, now!" Young Amity said.

"Wait, why?" Young Willow asked.

"Because - Because-"

"Is it because I still can't do magic?" Young Willow asked, taking Young Amity's hand. "Amity, I'm - I'm sorry I got us in trouble at the beach, I just - I can't get the spells right."

Young Amity ripped her hand away. "Well, yes, that - that is why! Because you're a weakling! You can't do magic so I don't wanna be your friend. Now, go!"

Inner Willow reduced them to dust. "Then you let your new friends pick on her for years. All because you thought she was weak." She said, floating upwards. "Well, now I can erase all that pain. After all..."

Her eyes turned black. "'Out of sight, out of mind'."

"Amity!" Hunter said, as a ring of fire encircled Amity's feet.

"Wait! Please." Amity said. The flames disappeared. "Before all this started, there - there was something else."

Something banged on the door. "Amity?"

The door opened to reveal Amity's parents.

"What is Willow doing here? She wasn't on the guest list for a reason." Her mom said.

"But, she's - she's my best friend!" Young Amity said. Inner Willow's eyes widened.

"Nonsense, Blights only associate with the strongest of witchlings. You can choose a new friend from one of the suitable companions we invited." Her dad said.

A black and white picture of young Boscha and Skara appeared next to the Blights, both witchlings looking bored.

"But they're mean! Just because you work with their parents doesn't mean I have to like them!" Young Amity protested.

"Good children don't squabble, dear. Sever your ties with Willow, and if you don't..." Her mom said.

"Then we will." Her dad finished. Young Amity gasped.

"We'll make sure this girl is never admitted into Hexside. Now go, and try not to make a scene." Her mom said, as the door closed. All the colors in the memory faded as the flames went out.

"Willow, you were never too weak to be my friend. I was too weak to be yours." Amity said. "I can't take back what I've done, but I can promise you this."

She took out Skara's invite out of her pocket. "I won't let Boscha and her gang pick on you ever again!" She tugged on the butterfly but paused. "I'm not actually going to rip it because it's a real butterfly, but you get the gesture, right?"

Amity pocketed the invite and held out a hand to Inner Willow, who turned with tears in her eyes.

"I do." She took her hand. "I think Willow should keep her memories of you. The good, and the bad."

"Me too." Amity said.

"Then, if it's okay, Amity and I still have work to do." Hunter said. Inner Willow nodded.

The three of them put their heads together, and in a flash they appeared back in the main forest of Willow's mind. Hunter handed Amity the repaired birthday photo, and Amity hung it on the tree. Young Inner Willow ran behind them, making them turn around. Inner Willow walked out from behind a tree, taking Young Inner Willow's hand, no longer surrounded by pink flames.

Amity and Hunter waved at them, as Young Inner Willow and Inner Willow waved back and left.

"So, does this mean you and Willow are friends again?" Hunter asked.

"I'm not sure." Amity said.

"Let's go see." Hunter said, pulling out the bell and ringing it.

+.*.+

Hunter and Amity landed in the Owl House living room with a puff of yellow smoke, and the bell disappeared from Hunter's hand. Flapjack immediately flew over to him and landed on his shoulder, nuzzling into him as he chuckled and gave him a pat. He then looked around, confused.

"Woah, what happened in here?" Hunter asked. "And where's Gus?"

"The kid's fine. He's just dead to us." Eda said, as she and King left the room grumpily.

"Those are very mixed messages." Hunter said, confused. Willow woke up.

"Willow! Do you know who I am?" Hunter asked.

"A friendly scarecrow?" Willow asked, sitting up. "Ha! Just messing, I remember everything."

Hunter sighed in relief. Amity turned to leave, giving a shy wave before taking a step out the door.

"I remember what you did, too." Willow said to Amity. She stopped at looked back.

"What you did in there." She pointed at her head. "I can't say we're friends, but... it's a start."

Amity waved again, smiling, before leaving and closing the door behind her.

"Hunter, question: how did Amity happen to see the photo I hid in class?" Willow asked. Hunter went suspiciously silent and stared at everything in the room except Willow.

"Well?" Willow asked.

"Uh... bathroom!" Hunter said, getting up and locking himself in a random room, his ears red.
