Part XV- A plan and a solution
The sky began to lighten and the morning dawned. Our journey had come to halt as we were unsure where to go or what to do. Bilbo was invisible to us and the black riders. We decided the best thing to do was to stay put and form a plan of sorts.
"Is there any way to communicate with Bilbo while he is in the world of light?" Legolas asked .
"Not to my knowledge. " Sighed Aragorn.
"It's never been done before." Added in Boromir.
"If Bilbo is after the black riders we could just find the black riders." Pippin suggested
Gimli shot up from his seat. "Are you mad, man? Going after them would be, be as foolish as bringing lunch to a dragon!"
"My old gaffer has a saying, 'If something needs a fix'en, What you have is what's a miss'en.'"
"English please." Boromir said
"All it means is to look at what you have, the answer could be right here under our very noses."
Gandalf thought for a second, "It's worth a try."
We began to empty out all of our belongings, which weren't much. Just our weapons, water canteens, blankets, a bit of rope, pipes and pipe tobacco, some food and a few odds and ends.
"Nothing." Frodo sighed.
"It was a good try." Said Aragorn.
Gandalf sat down upon a rock and puffed on his pipe in frustration.
Pippin walked over to him and sat beside the wizard. "This is the end, isn't it?" He asked.
Gandalf looked down at the forlorn Hobbit, raised an eyebrow and said, "The end of one adventure, brings a new beginning of another adventure."
"I've got an idea!" Exclaimed Merry
We all looked to him in hope and those hope were dashed when he says, "Let's each tell one thing we have done or seen we want to see or do again someday."
"Another game?" I asked
"Don't think of it as a game, but of a conversation." Merry corrected
"Maybe our last conversation." Boromir mumbled.
"Alright, I'll start then." I volunteered. "I want to work in a garden again."
"I wish to see my uncle safe in Rivendell." Frodo said.
"To see Gandalf's fireworks again." Pippin sighed.
"Yes, you remember setting off that big one at Bilbo's last birthday?" Merry laughed.
"Aye, that was an adventure all in it's own" Pippin replied.
"What did you just say?" Gandalf inquired.
Merry and Pippin exchanged glances. "That part wasn't fun, it was a bad idea" Merry said quietly.
"Yes, never again." Pippin said looking down at this feet.
Gandalf stood to his feet and began to pace back and forth. We sat watching him. Suddenly he nodded his head and said,
"Yes of course, it's so simple, don't know why I didn't think of it before."
"What is your plan?" Legolas asked.
Gandalf smiled, "Something simple enough for a hobbit to think up and something crazy enough for a dwarf to try."
We glanced at Gimli who frowned a bit then gave a smile, "We are a people known to be called reckless."
We laughed, which we hadn't done in quiet a while. I watched as Gandalf noticed a moth flitter by. The wizard caught it in his hand and whispered something to it.
After letting it go, He turned to us and said, "I am going to go pick up something that may save us all."
"And what would that be?" Aragorn asked.
Gandalf simply replied,"Fireworks."
We stared at him as if he had gone insane.
I spoke up, "Interesting idea, but how do you plan to-"
Gandalf cut me off "No time to explain, my ride is here, I shall not be long, stay here, all of you."
We looked up to see a beautiful, golden colored eagle gracefully coming down, he landed before us and Gandalf climbed onto his back, promising a speedy return.
After he had left we started discussing what Gandalf had in mind.
"Perhaps he had a bad mushroom." Pippin suggested.
Aragorn suppressed a laugh, "No my friend, Gandalf has a reason for all of his doings."
"All may be too late." Boromir said
"Have hope." Legolas said.
Boromir shook his head, "I feel the worst."
Aragorn and Legolas exchanged glances.
While we waited Aragorn, Gimli and Boromir sharpened their weapons. Legolas stood off by himself, he needed solititude. Frodo and I packed up our belongings that were left out.
"I don't know if I can bear this much longer." Frodo said.
"Everything will work out, keep hanging on." I tried to encourage.
"He has returned!" Legolas suddenly announced.
We all looked toward the sky and indeed, there in the distance was the eagle. As it came closer we saw Gandalf carrying a rather large sack. We then saw something that made all worries, doubts and fears vanish. As the eagle came near, he gently laid something on the ground. We watched as Gandalf climbed down from the great bird. He thanked the eagle and as it flew off, Gandalf smiled and said,
"On the way back here I ran into a dear old friend."
For the first time in ages, it seemed, Frodo gave a genuine smile and said, "Bilbo! You found Bilbo!"
