Luffy vs Popeye

Requested by SinnamonSymon

One Piece vs Thimble Theatre, Devil Fruit vs Spinach, Haki vs Toon Force, Pirate vs Sailor, when the aspiring King of the Pirates encounters Popeye the Sailor Man, both combatants will be in a fight for their lives. Will Luffy send Popeye flying with his Gum Gum techniques or will Popeye knock Luffy's bloody block off?

<Cue: Invader Theme>

Toomi: Monkey D. Luffy, the future king of the pirates!

Megumi: And Popeye, the Sailor Man,

Toomi: In history, pirates and sailors had a major rivalry, fighting over territory, treasures, well being, freedom, and... women...

Megumi: Well, we can't say much for these exaggerated eating happy go lucky sea travelers! She's Sachi, Toomi and I'm Megumi

Sachi: And it's our job to analyse their weapons, armor and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle

Luffy Gums Gums into What if Battles

<Cue: Music by AAA>

Toomi: A long time ago. Gol D Rogers the king of the pirates was sent to be executed. He was the pirate king, and had things like the money, jewels, and treasures to him.

Sachi: Until before being executed in public. Rogers told everyone he had some buried treasure in this near never ending manga called the...

Megumi: ONE PIECE!!!

Toomi: Right?. But before his death. Rogers told an acquaintance of his from the Marines to raise and care for his soon to be borned son. Who he feared would have been executed. So Rogers acquaintance: Monkey D. Garp adopted his son, and raised him alongside his own grandson who he was left to take care of after his son: Monkey D. Dragon the Revolutionary bounced and gave his son, Monkey D. Luffy.

Megumi: Anyways. Luffy, Ace, and their friend Sabo declared themselves brothers, and formed a path to forever live life as free as possible. But eventually in two different scenarios Luffy ate a devil fruit from Garp, or Shanks and his crew of pirates.

Sachi: Luffy's signature devil fruit ability: Gomu Gomu No Mi, which is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. This fruit makes Luffy's body rubbery and can make Luffy stretch out his limbs to an incredible length. And with moves like Gatling and Bazooka. Luffy's body can deflect blades, bullets, and is so strong he can knock marines and other pirates over 500 yards.

Toomi: Luffy can unleash a barrage of punches and kicks from his rubbery arms and legs, sense his surroundings with observation Haki, and even armor up his arm with armament haki, or even more forms of haki.

Megumi: Luffy can also air up his arms and turn them into huge cannon balls. Plus he can use all kinds of moves like the Red Hawk, which can heat him up more and more.

Haoshoku (Conqueror's) Haki

Toomi: Defensively, Luffy, being made of rubber, is completely immune to lightning. He also cannot be harmed by blunt attacks not imbued with Busoshoku Haki, including punches, blunt weapons, and even being stepped on by gigantic opponents. If struck by blunt projectiles, such as bullets or cannonballs, he can bounce them back toward the place it came from, potentially threatening the one who launched it.

Megumi: Luffy has also shown a limited ability of moving in mid-air, by grabbing onto something with an extended limb and propelling away from what could have been a fatal attack. This gives Luffy the option of several jumping and mid-air attacks that would have been disadvantageous to most other people as it would have left them vulnerable.

Sachi: Luffy also have Haki, an ability to sense spiritual energy and overpower enemies. Broadly, there are two types of Haki common to everyone, given the proper training; however, there is a third type that only a certain group of "chosen ones" are said to possess. Is like KI in Dragon Ball or Chakra in Naruto.

Toomi: With Hoashaku Haki he can knock people back with Kenbunshoku Haki he can see the future to some extent and with Busoshoku Haki he can increase his attack powers while also increasing durablity he also can explode people from inside

Megumi: But Luffy also has Gears where Gear 2 makes him more faster Gear 3 is attacks where he made his arms or legs giant and hit you pretty hard and Gear 4 turns him to a literal walking tank where he can perform King Kong Gun WHERE HE BRİNGS THE FORCE OF GOD UPON YOU WİTH A GİANT FİST

Sachi: Not even mentioning Gear 5, which strengthens the user's rubbery body. It also allows the user the ability to manipulate and transform their environment, similar to a Paramecia's awakening. And best of all, he can do the things he did with Gear 2 and 3 without the need to inflate air into his bones

Toomi: Even before all of these, Luffy has lots of incredible victories, defeating Alvida, Kuro, Don Krieg, Buggy, Arlong, Wapol, all that before he even got his Gears.

Sachi: The fact that his starting bounty was 30 000 000 berries, which continues to grow and Luffy defeated more powerful warlords, to the point even world governments and even celestial dragons

Megumi: And he even managed to match Laboon in fight, who is a Kaiju Whale.

Feats

3,000,000,000 Berry Bounty. Luffy's feats and crimes against the World Government concern even the Celestial Dragons.

Defeated some of the most powerful pirates in the world.

Defeated three then-Warlords of the Sea; Crocodile(in Alabasta), Donquiote Doflamingo(in Dressrosa), and Gecko Moriah(on Thriller Bark).

Also defeated Buggy the Clown, who would later become a Warlord.

Other victories include; Kuro, Don Kreig, Arlong, Wapol, Eneru, Foxy, Lucci, Hordy Jones and Caesar Clown.

Defeated Bellamy the Hyena in one punch.

Matched the kaiju whale Laboon in combat.

Can eat at least his bodyweight in food in 1/4 of a second

Near the beginning of the series, reacts to bullets

Survived being crushed by Kuro's Figurehead and was able to sleep soundly despite the fact.

Catches up with Kuro and even snatches him while he was using Shakushi, an FTE technique that is similar to Soru.

Tanks Mr. 5's explosions

Before he could even utilize Gear Two, he reacts to, and intercepts Bellamy, who is Massively FTE, he punches him

Ran and attacked with a 600 000 pound golden ball attached to his hand

Recovered from having all of his cells regenerate to remove a deadly poison from his body in less than a day. The average length for this process takes a week, but usually kills the patient.

Deflects Garp's Cannonballs. Even though this was Old Garp, in his prime he fought Roger numerous times.

Wrecks a small mountain

Reacts to Pacifista Lasers

Reacts to Lightning

Figured out Crocodile's weakness, and used it to his advantage in their second battle. He defeats Crocodile in their third fight.

Tanks a powerful punch from Moriah, who can do this

Gigant Pistol plows through a wall of a large building, and through another large building rather casually.

Gigant Axe snaps the bow of a Marine Battleship, amongst the strongest seafaring ships in the One Piece verse.

Dodges Overheat from Doflamingo

Calls Pacifista Lasers "too slow"

Outruns a huge liquid explosion, at point blank

Easily bites through Steel Chains

In their fight, he easily keeps up with Doflamingo, who is extremely fast., and he is a fighter who is able to react to meteors at point blank.

Fourth Gear is quick and fast enough to disappear from Doflamingo's sight

Fourth Gear easily overpowers Doflamingo, even when he was using God Thread (Haki Strings) and Spider's Web simultaneously, with the Kong Gun. Doflamingo being a person who can stop someone like Jozu in the middle of them attacking.

Effortlessly dodged thousands of throwing weapons.

Defeated Charlotte Cracker, one of the Big Mom Pirates Three Sweet Commanders

Defeated Charlotte Katakuri, the strongest of the Three Sweet Commanders, and a person whose Kenbunshoku Haki is so advanced he is able to see seconds into the future.

Defeated Kaidou on nearly equal footing in Gear 5

While weakened, he could block several stabs from Doflamingo aimed at his chest

Toomi: He can contend with enemies on the level of Shanks and Blackbeard and even defear Kaidou with Gear 5.

Megumi: This weird-ass fruit made Luffy a living rubber band, stretching here and there, but like rubber bands in general, he can't fricking swim.

Toomi: Correct, and his fighting style though is tried-and-true, he's no martial arts master by any means; while he is an expert in combat, outside, he's not really smart... at all.

Sachi: He's not an idiot by any means, but he's definitely not on the bright side. He's much more of an on-hands guy rather than a strategist.

Megumi: And since his body is made of rubber, you mean I can defeat Luffy with just a needle?

Weakness

Can't swim in any standing water (fresh, salt, or whale stomach acids), vulnerable to seastone, and his body gets immobilized if more than half of it is covered in water.

His rubber body has no resistance to sharp objects like blades or pointed bullets (like those from Don Krieg).

Gear 2nd drains his stamina quickly. After defeating Lucci: Luffy was unable to move for several minutes. After defeating Moria: Luffy was knocked out.

After its use, when Third Gear wears off, Luffy temproraily reverts to the size and stature of his 10-year-old self, rendering his attacks useless for roughly 30 seconds.

Kenbunshoku Haki isn't always active, and Luffy cannot dodge an attack if he doesn't have enough time to get out of the way.

Luffy is only resistant to poisons, not immune: some poisons can still harm or kill him if they are potent enough

Is easy to deceive.

Rarely thinks of a plan until halfway through a battle and can be impulsive, suborn and reckless.

Has frequently picked a fight with other characters, sometimes for minor reasons.

Tried to rip his own arms off when they were nailed to a wall.

Simpleton outside of battle.

His lifespan has been cut short by about 20 years due to two doses of the Emporio Healing Hormone and repeated use of 2nd Gear.

Vulnerable to Hypnotism and Mind Control

His hunger is so intense that he has tried to eat Chopper -- EVEN AFTER Chopper officially joined his crew.

Terrible, terrible liar

Loves ninjas and laserbeams

Toomi: But he also has a great appetite for food, even once being so hungry he even tried eating Chopper, whom even after he had joined his crew.

Sachi: And of course, his Gears severely weaken his stamina and health, making him vulnerable should his opponent survive his onslaught.

Megumi: But despite his weaknesses. Luffy will keep on pushing as a pirate until he reaches his goal in becoming the King of Pirates

Luffy: Who am I? Monkey D Luffy. I'll surpass you...and become King of the Pirates.

Popeye is What he is in What if Battles

<Cue: Drunken Sailor by Irish Rovers>

Toomi: I'm sure everyone grew up hearing adults tell them to eat their vegetables if they wanted to grow up to be big and strong. And while there is truth to that, there's no greater example than a certain one-eyed sailor.

Megumi: He's strong to the finish, 'cause he eats his spinach! He's Popeye the Sailor Man

Sachi: Born to the cruelly named Poopdeck Pappy, Popeye was, immediately upon birth, horrifically ugly. So ugly, his father fled in embarrassment of his spawn and never returned.

Toomi: Popeye was adopted by the sailor Whaler Joe. Throughout his childhood, Popeye would learn how to fight and take up the mantle of being a defender for the weak and bullied.

Megumi: It was there he'd learn the sweet science of boxing and do battle against World War II-era racial stereotypes. I'm being non-specific, not just for sensitivity, but because there are SO MANY examples.

Sachi: Originating in the era of , Popeye's body is essentially made of, well, rubber, able to stretch, twist, squish and squash any way he likes.

Megumi: Or rev up his arm for a punch that'll knock you around the planet!

Toomi: Popeye's punches are fascinating, since they can disincorporate their targets into composite elements, like turning anchors into fish hooks, an alligator into handbags, and several Native Americans... y'know, I don't even want to know.

Megumi: It's pretty simple Toomi, he's a cartoon. He's a cartoon, he can basically do whatever he wants. He can shoot fire from his corncob pipe, pull a canyon closed, punch bolts of lightning out of the air, and even give the Sun a black eye.

Sachi: Judging by the distance the Sun is from the Earth, as well as the time it took for the high-striker puck to reach it, the puck must've been moving at 500 times the speed of light. In order to generate that force, Popeye must've swung his fist just as fast. Hell, he's even shadow-boxed so fast, he somehow occupied two places at once and hit himself!

Megumi: So what is his secret to becoming this powerful? Is being born ugly somehow unlocked some hidden potential within him?

Toomi: No. Though his secret of power may not be some exciting magic or something, the secret to Popeye's immense physical strength is simply the virtue of... nutrition.

Megumi: Really? That can't be right?

Sachi: Specifically, Popeye has spent his life consuming a miracle herb that has turned him from a mere sailor into a veritable god: Spinach!

Megumi: Propaganda, straight from the bean counters at Big Vegetable! You'll never get me to eat my greens, damn you!

Sachi: Originating in Persia, Spinacia oleracea is a leafy green nutrient and antioxidant-rich vegetable that can help prevent cancer and reduce blood pressure.

Toomi: While a normal can of spinach contains about 44 calories, when used in Popeye's world, its effects are multiplied! Not only does it immediately increase Popeye's already impressive speed and strength even further, it makes him virtually impervious to harm!

Megumi: It lets him fly, turn invisible, shapeshift his body into literally anything, and even survive the universe getting turned off! That's right, this big whatever-the-hell-that-thing-is is apparently God, and he turned off reality in order to kill Popeye and his friends. 'Cause why not? Except guess what? Popeye was fine! Why? Because he eats his spinach.

Toomi: While not the healthiest habit, Popeye's just not complete without his pipe. It could be that Popeye smoking just doesn't have any negative effects on him, as we've even seen that Popeye can breathe in space just fine. But his pipe isn't just a trademark of his character since it can actually help him out at times, as we once saw him spin his pipe like a propellor in order to fly, or simply use it to launch himself through the air.

Megumi: As if he actually needs to fly. He can jump up and punch fighter jets out of the sky, and once even jumped up so high he was able to punch the man in the moon and give it a black eye. Or how about the time he punched Bluto into space and alter the constellations. Yeah, try and figure that one out.

Feats

Punched bullets, lightning bolts, lasers, and magic spells

Moved so fast he occupied multiple spaces

Knocked out his animator and torn apart his own film strip

Gave the sun a black eye with a High Striker game weight

Tilted the planet's axis after knocking Bluto into it

Punched Bluto around the world and into the moon (turning it into a crescent)

Knocked Bluto into space, altering the constellations

Knocked Bluto through time to turn him into an infant

Punched Bluto into the real world

Pulled the Grand Canyon and the continents together

Used a lasso to pull the moon closer to Earth and make the sun rise

Caught and withstood bullets

Lifted Earth and juggled planets

Dog-paddled an island

Defeated Bluto, Zeus, Sinbad, animals, giant monsters, dinosaurs, ghosts, giant machines

Received the Medal of Honor from Eisenhower

Destroyed a comet to save Earth

Fought and defeated a lightning bolt; a feat so impressive that it scared away the storm clouds.

Sunk a whaling ship with "the force of a torpedo". He was also compared to a tsunami.

Split a pirate ship in half with a single chop.

Casually lifted a house.

Physically bent a shotgun.

Punched out a building-sized sea monster.

Caught bullets.

Took over 50 rounds of rapid-fire bullets while already critically harmed and didn't suffer from any added injuries.

Killed a great white shark with his bare hands.

Survived the explosion of a factory.

Defeated an entire building of armed men without a scratch on him.

Jumped up and punched the man in the moon

Rematerialized after being disintegrated

Withstood God turning off reality

An iron maiden's spikes bent when trying to crush him.

A sniper tried to headshot Popeye; only for the bullet to bounce back and hit the sniper.

While walking under a Pile Driver the machine struck Popeye directly onto his crown. But the recoil of the impact destroyed the machine while Popeye was oblivious to the event.

Unharmed by lightning strikes to the head

After getting completely vaporized by a laser, Popeye re-materialized by eating spinach: SOMEHOW

Has fought higher dimensional beings on more than one occasions

Has fought and beaten ogbert from the seventh dimensio

Toomi: What's even shocking is that his spinach isn't magic or anything. Literally any kind would do, even if it's handed to him by the audience in the real world watching his cartoon!

Megumi: He can summon cans to his side by whistling for them, praying to gods, painting them into reality, or just waving his hand! The dude has literally been disintegrated into nothingness, then his nothingness grabbed a spinach can out of nowhere and ate it, NOTHING ate it, his NOTHING, and then he came back good as ne-I-I don't-I don't know...

Toomi: Popeye still has his fair share of weakness and isn't that OP such as he is soft hearted and doesn't want to hurt innocents

Sachi: And has shown some hypocrisy like he doesn't like hurting animals even though he does so while he may be OP, he's not perfect.

Megumi: And his spinach can power up his enemies as well. As shown when Bluto ate some spinach and he gained incredible strength that can hurt Popeye himself.

Weakness

Before eating his spinach; Popeye's strength is significantly weaker. Some depictions of Popeye are not superhuman without spinach.

The effects of the spinach are temporary; (although there is no constant time limit).

His spinach can power-up his opponents as well; any enemy able to steal his spinach will be able to mimic Popeye's absurd feats of power.

Popeye's later depictions are not as absurd as his original cartoons/comics.

Popeye is very aggressive and is willing to pick a fight, even against obviously stronger opponents.

Toomi: And before eating spinach, Popeye is weaker to the point some versions of him can even lose to Bluto.

Sachi: And the effects of the spinach are temporary though there is no known time limit.

Megumi: Even so, it's best not to get on his bad side, not unless you want to experience first-hand just how strong he really is.

Popeye: So keep good behavior, that's your one lifesaver, with Popeye the Sailor Man.

Toomi: Alright, the combatants are set, let's end this debate once and for all.

Sachi: Don't forget to vote, comment what you think of the fight.

Megumi: Yeah, but right now, it's time for a Death Battle!

Fight

Market Place

At a small town, Luffy saunters around the market place, looking for food.

Luffy: Man, I'm hungry, I wanna what should I eat tonight.

Luffy then notices a can of spinach at a stall, attracting his attention as he picks it up.

Luffy looks at the can, noticing a cartoonish sailor character printed below the brand of the spinach written as "Segar's Spinach"

Luffy thought for a while before saying.

Luffy: Ehhhhh, not interested.

Luffy tosses the can of spinach aside, with not a care in the world.

However, that action causes the can to shake, attracting his attention.

Luffy: Huh?

Luffy looks as the cartoonish man suddenly faces him before thrusting his fist out, but what shocked Luffy the most is that the fist flies out, striking him hard in the face.

POW!!!

The impact sends Luffy flying, crashing into a stall.

CRASH!!!

As Luffy recovers, Popeye puts the can of spinach back and he says to the Straw Hat Pirate.

<Cue: Lucky by Lucky Twice>

Popeye: I's cant's stands no one bad mouthing me spinach. Put 'em up, ya's big palooka!

Luffy: Okay, not expecting that but I could really use some exercise, so bring it on!

Luffy and Popeye faces off as the announcer screams out.

Announcer: Fight!

Luffy: Gum Gum Pistol!

Luffy extends his arm out just as Popeye throws a punch, both their fists colliding into each other.

POW!!!

Luffy extends his other hand out only for Popeye to slide underneath his arm before jumping up, punching him several times.

WHAM!!! BAM!!! POW!!!

Popeye then spins his arm around before throwing one powerful punch, striking Luffy in the face.

POW!!!

The punch sends Luffy's head flying, his neck stretching to an extended degree before bouncing back, shooting straight back at Popeye

Luffy: Gum Gum Bell!

BOING!!!

Popeye watches in shot as Luffy's head flies back, headbutting Popeye in the head.

BAM!!!

The strike sends Popeye flying, crashing into the spinach stall.

CRASH!!!

Luffy: Gum Gum...Battleaxe!

As Popeye is dazed from the attack, he looks up, noticing Luffy's leg extending out up into the sky.

Luffy then swings his leg down, the leg smashing through a large buildings, going down before striking into Popeye.

POW!!!

Popeye: Oof!

CRASH!!!

The leg smashes through the building, creating a massive crater onto the floor.

As the dust clears, Luffy stretches himself back, he looks at the crater and he asks.

Luffy: Come on, is that all?

At the same time, a can of spinach rolls past him before falling into the crater, bouncing off the rocks before the metallic plate cracks, spilling the green contents out.

The unconscious Popeye lay on the floor, his mouth open and his tongue sticks out as the spinach lands on his tongue.

SPLAT!!!

Popeye's tongue shoots back into his mouth, chewing and swallowing the spinach before his eyes shot open.

His muscles extends, his body bounces back, Popeye smirks as he felt empowered by the spinach.

Popeye: Alrighty, 'ere we go!

BOING!!!

Popeye shoots himself up, flying as fast as a torpedo as he closes in onto Luffy.

Luffy looks down, noticing something flying and he asks.

Luffy: Hey, what is that...

WHAM!!!

Popeye's head smacks Luffy in the chin, uppercutting the pirate as Popeye grabs Luffy, spinning him around before throwing him down into a building.

CRASH!!!

The building collapses from the impact as Popeye remarks.

Popeye: Well, I'll be. Y'ere a tough nut to crack.

Luffy pushes himself out of the rubble, complimenting the Sailor.

Luffy: Well, you're not so bad yourself. Show me more.

WHOOSH!!!

Both Luffy and Popeye bounces across the street, punching each other in a pinball fashion.

BOING!!! POW!!! BOING!!! POW!!! BOING!!! POW!!!

Luffy: Gum Gum Bazooka!

Luffy extends both hands out, the two fists striking Popeye in the chest.

WHAM!!!

To Luffy's surprise, the punch sends Popeye's body stretching, before the Sailor retracts his body, punching Luffy with one powerful punch.

BAM!!!

Luffy was sent flying from the blow, smashing through buildings after buildings before crash landing on a ship.

CRASH!!!

Luffy lay dazed as he pushes himself up, groaning.

Luffy: Ohhhh, my head. Huh?

Luffy notices a crate of meat next to him and he quickly takes a bite, munching onto it.

NOM!!! NOM!!! NOM!!!

Just as Popeye arrives at the scene, he notices Luffy standing there, his body stretching and smoking as he says to Popeye.

Luffy: You are strong, but you are no match for me. I have reach a new level. Gear 2nd!

Popeye: Eye. What in th' blazes.

Luffy: Jet Punch!

Luffy throws a punch faster than Popeye can react, sending the sailor crashing through a ship.

POW!!!

CRASH!!!

Popeye pulls himself up, turning to face the audience before reaching his hand out, his hand moving out of the tv screen, grabbing some spinach beside a can of peas and a bottle of olive oil while Violet Evergarden is busy cooking before pulling his hand back in just as she turns around, confused.

After taking the spinach, Popeye began immediately gulp down the leaves, eating it.

GULP!!! GULP!!! GULP!!!

BOING!!! POP!!!

Popeye's body stretches and pulls as the spinach empowers him further, causing him to say.

Popeye: Yer' fast, I give ya that. I'd tip m' hat to you.

Luffy: I see you ate some veggies. I don't know how that helps but let's see what you got.

ZOOM!!!

Luffy launches forward, moving at super speed as he strikes into Popeye.

WHAM!!!

As Popeye staggers, Luffy launches back, striking into Popeye again.

WHAM!!!

Popeye then extends his arms, shielding himself as Luffy began attacking him with a flurry of punches.

WHAM!!! BAM!!! POW!!!

As Luffy continues to punch Popeye at rapid speed, Popeye's eyes began to follow every punch thrown, adapting to his opponent's speed, before just as Luffy throws another punch, Popeye ducks and he swings his leg out, kicking Luffy in the body.

WHAM!!!

Luffy bounces back, wincing in pain before he launches himself back.

Luffy: Gum Gum Gatling!

WHAM!!! BAM!!! POW!!!

Both Popeye and Luffy began throwing punches at rapid speed, their attacks only getting faster and faster before their fists disappears into a speeding blur.

Luffy then extends both hands out as he shouts.

Luffy: Gum Gum Gum Gum / Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk!

FWOOSH!!!

Luffy's arms engulfs in flames as he throws the punch, only for Popeye to dodge the blow before launching himself forward at high speed, headbutting Luffy in the process.

BAM!!!

The impact sends Luffy crashing back, panting as he drops his 2nd Gear.

Luffy: Incredible. That power.

Popeye: You ain't seen nothing yet!

Popeye launches himself forward, forcing Luffy to raise up his arms in defense as Popeye throws a punch, striking into him.

BAM!!!

Luffy skids across the floor, amazed at the sailor's power and he smirks.

Luffy: Incredible. Just incredible. But you wanna see what else I'm capable of?

Popeye: Ey?

Luffy bites his right thumb, to the bone, and then blows air directly into the bare bone.

SHOOSH!!!

Luffy's arms then inflates, growing larger and larger until they are much bigger than even his own body.

Luffy: Behold, Gear 3.

Popeye notices this and he remarks.

Popeye: Ey, I can do that too!

Popeye puts his thumb in his mouth and he began blowing into it, inflating his arms.

SHOOSH!!!

With both their arms inflated, both Popeye and Luffy launches at each other, going out in a massive punch up with each other.

WHAM!!! BAM!!! POW!!!

Luffy's fist collides into Popeye's cheek.

WHAM!!!

Popeye's fist collides into Luffy's cheek.

BAM!!!

Both Luffy and Popeye throws an upward and downward punch, striking each other's groin at the same time.

POW!!!

Both Luffy and Popeye bounces back realizing that they are both evenly matched before Popeye launches himself towards Luffy.

Luffy charges up his Haki, in his mind, thinking to himself.

Luffy: I must end this with Haoshoku Haki. This...is the only way!

Luffy throws both hands out, screaming out

Luffy: Gum Gum Grizzly Magnum!

THOOM!!!

That one blow instantly causes Popeye's body to be sent flying across the sea.

With Popeye gone, Luffy pants in exhaustion, remarking out.

Luffy: Damn, this guy sure did a number on me.

As Luffy stood there recovering, far from the island, Popeye skids across the water before crashing into an island.

CRASH!!!

Popeye gets up, shaking his head as he looks around.

Realizing that he is not where he is, Popeye began running around, collecting several trees to build himself a raft.

Port

<Cue: That's The Way It Is by Celine Dion>

While Luffy is munching on a bunch of meat to recuperate his energy from his fight, at that moment, he notices something moving from the distance.

Luffy: Huh? What is that?

Luffy picks up a telescope and he takes to look, what he saw causes his eyes to widen.

Moving across the sea is Popeye seated on a makeshift row boat, rowing across the water at unnatural speed.

Luffy: Whoa! He's good. But he's heading towards me fast!

Luffy then picks up several of the ship's debris before hurling them at Popeye, to which the sailor easily dodges the projectiles, the barrage barely slowing down his progress.

Luffy: Geez, what are you?

Luffy asks as he picks up a large cannon, throwing it directly at Popeye.

Popeye jumps up just as the cannon destroys his boat, declaring out.

Popeye: I yam what I yam...and that's all what I YAM!

Popeye's arm expands once more as he slams it down onto Luffy.

BAM!!!

The impact destroys the shipwreck, sending Luffy crashing into the water.

Luffy struggles as he thrashes his arms, realizing that he cannot swim.

At that moment, Popeye lands in the water, noticing Luffy before swimming down after him.

Realizing he is at a disadvantage, Luffy quickly activates his Second Gear, performing his attack once more.

Luffy: Gum Gum Red Hawk!

FWOOSH!!!

The flames bursts underwater as Luffy throws his punch, causing Popeye to turn to the audience, saying.

Popeye: Well, I'll be...

BOOM!!!

The impact sends both Luffy and Popeye flying out of the water and back on dry land.

Luffy takes the time to catch his breath.

Luffy: Boy, glad that worked. Now time to...whoa!

Luffy exclaims out as a Marine ship flies into the air, striking into him.

Down on the ground, Popeye pats the dust off his hands as he smirks.

At that moment, the ship went off in a massive explosion.

KABOOM!!!

Popeye looks up, and what he saw causes his eyes to widen.

Luffy's hair and clothes have turned white, his eyes glow with red ring-like pupils, and white clouds float around his neck, similar to the clouds of steam that accompany him in Gear 4

Luffy has activated Gear 5!

Luffy and Popeye launches up into the air where the two throws one punch at each other.

<Cue: You Are A Pirate by Stefán Karl Stefánsson>

KABOOM!!!

The impact creates a massive atomic level explosion, sending water flying everywhere.

THOOM!!! THOOM!!! THOOM!!!

Luffy and Popeye throws punches after punches, the two clashing as they move across the ocean.

Luffy dodges a punch from Popeye before striking him in the face.

THOOM!!!

Popeye then notices the Black Pearl floating in the middle of the ocean before grabbing it, flipping the ship over as he empties the ship of it's crew before launching himself back at Luffy.

Jack Sparrow watches in sheer horror while floating on the ocean and he cries out.

Jack: Wait wait wait! Where are you going with that?!

Popeye swings the Black Pearl, striking into Luffy.

BOOM!!!

Luffy's shape began shifting as it takes the form of the Black Pearl while Popeye swings him around, throwing him across the ocean.

Popeye: Here's a widdle trick I learnt fr'm someone I used t' know.

Popeye launches himself after Luffy as he throws a punch.

WHAM!!!

As Luffy is sent flying, Popeye closes in and he threw another punch.

WHAM!!!

Luffy recovers from the blow, taking the Black Pearl before swinging it over his head, slamming it down onto Popeye.

SPLASH!!!

While Jack Sparrow is sobbing at the destruction of his ship, at that moment, Deadpool and Pinkie Pie emerges out of the water with Deadpool patting Jack Sparrow on the shoulder while Pinkie Pie comforts him.

Pinkie Pie: There there, it's okay.

Popeye reemerges from the ship wreck and he closes in to face off Luffy.

<Cue: Still Love You by AAA>

Luffy: You know, you're really strong. How did you get this strong?

Popeye: I eats me spinach.

Waves crashes around them, the water even separating as Popeye and Luffy closes in, punching each other once again.

WHAM!!! BAM!!! POW!!!

Despite feeling the exhaustion hitting, Luffy thinks to himself.

Luffy: This guy...is amazing. And if he wants to...he can become the King of the Pirates.

Charging up his Haki, Luffy throws one more Busoshoku Haki, screaming out.

Luffy: YAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

Popeye also throws one final powerful punch, their fists colliding right into each other.

THOOM!!!

As both Luffy and Popeye stood, at that moment, Luffy felt the bones in his body crack and shatter, causing him to scream out in agony.

Luffy: HUARGHHHHH!!!

Luffy then staggers back, his body twisting and turning before going off in an explosion of blood and gore.

BOOM!!!

Popeye stares at him looking up as he notices Luffy's straw hat floating down, catching it before turning to the audience, singing out.

Popeye: He's sure he is elastic, but th' end sure is drastic, I'm Popeye the Sailor Maaan!

Toot toot!

KO!

<Cue: Island Song by Ashley Eriksson>

Megumi: Man, Jack Sparrow's been real quiet ever since this dropped. Say, what should the Wanted Poster say about Popeye's Bounty?

Toomi: I don't know, over 9000 berries that's for sure. Anyway, both Popeye and Luffy have displayed great amount of elasticity and can stretch their bodies to a cartoonish degree but when it comes to durability and strength, shockingly it's not even close.

Sachi: While Luffy has displayed incredible level of strength, Popeye has shown limitless level of strength, having shown he can send Bluto into space, even give the literal sun a black eye while Luffy's best feats only involve sending people flying across the world.

Toomi: While Luffy is certainly resistant to taking damage, there is a limit to his durability as sharp objects can pierce him wheareas Popeye doesn't have any weaknesses similar to that.

Megumi: Though there is also Luffy's Gears to take note of and his Hakis, shouldn't Busoshoku Haki be able to one shot Popeye.

Toomi: One shot maybe but kill him, no. Popeye has survived getting struck by lightning shot at, even erased from existence without dying. So even if Popeye can be outclassed by Luffy's Gear 3 and 4, he wouldn't be put down by that alone.

Sachi: And Gear 2 though helps increase Luffy's speed, hasn't really allowed him to reach faster than light speed Popeye has achieved. Not even including the fact that Gear 2 also like Gear 3 and 4 decreases Luffy's energy.

Toomi: And there is Gear 5 where Luffy also can stretch his body to a cartoonishly degree which though he is able to defeat Kaidou, it is certainly not enough to put down Popeye who like we said, can even survived getting his existence erased. Hell, he can even rematerialize himself after being erased.

Megumi: And if we count any parodies or non-canon versions like Captain Strong from Action Comics that fought Silver Age Superman, yup, Luffy is toast.

Toomi: In the end, while Luffy's elasticity, strength and Haki certainly make him one of the strongest shonen characters to date, Popeye's own toon force, immense strength and limitless power is beyond Luffy's own comprehension

Megumi: I don't know what it is, but Luffy need that one thing. And Popeye's got that...One Piece

Sachi: The winner is Popeye

Popeye: Oh I'm Popeye the Sailor Man, I'm Popeye the Sailor Man, I'm strong to the finich, 'Cuz I eats me spinach, I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

Toomi: Hey guys, thank you so much for checking out our battle in What if Battles 2.

Sachi: If you want more content like this, don't forget to add this in your library and comment if you have any idea for a fight.

Megumi: Until then, next time on What if Battles...

Trivia

* The connections between Monkey D Luffy and Popeye is that both combatants are sea sailers with incredible powers involving punching, stretching their limbs to a cartoony degree, being as elastic as rubber and possessing an insane level of strength and durability. * The two also wears a signature hat, a straw hat for Luffy and a sailor hat for Popeye. The two also never knew their birth fathers with Luffy haven't being part of Monkey D Dragon's life while Popeye was abandoned by Poopdeck Pappy

* The two also gain their power through the consumption of plant products, the Devil Fruit for Luffy and Spinach for Popeye. And the two seems to like eating as eating also increases their strength

* Interestingly, the two have great ambitions thanks to their mentor or father figures, Shanks who inspired Luffy to become the King of the Pirates and Whale Joe who inspired Popeye to become a sailor of the Navy which is also interesting as real life pirates and sailors are arch enemies, especially when both Luffy fights Marines in the One Piece series and Popeye fights Pirates in his own series

* The two are even close to a woman who had a rough start with them before warming up to them though they continue to be very bossy, Nami for Luffy and Olive Oyl for Popeye

* This is the first time a One Piece character fights a Thimble Theatres character

* This is the first time a Thimble Theatres character wins a What if Battles

* This is the first time a One Piece character loses a What if Battle

* This battle is most likely created to commemorate the release of the Netflix Live action One Piece adaptation

* During the fight, the way how Luffy uses Gum Gum Battleaxe to hit Popeye while he destroys a tall building in the process is a reference to how he defeated Arlong in the One Piece series

* The way how Luffy uses 2nd Gear to attack Popeye is a reference to his fight with Blueno.

* The way how Popeye expands his arms to shield himself from Luffy's attack is a reference to the scene in Record of Ragnarok where Raiden Tameemon uses his Miyama technique to shield himself from Shiva's War Dance

* The way how Popeye punches Luffy across the ocean is a reference to the scene from the movie Man of Steel where Superman punches General Zod. Interestingly, a Popeye parody called Captain Strong faced Superman in Action Comics #421 and Popeye referenced that while fighting Luffy

* Captain Jack Sparrow even made a cameo in the fight, with his ship the Black Pearl being used as a weapon by Luffy and Popeye

* Violet Evergarden even made a cameo, cooking what is spinach next to a can of peas and a bottle of olive oil which are likely a nod to Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl and their adopted son Swee'Pea.

* The brand of spinach Popeye is on is called "Segar's Spinach", a reference to Popeye's creator, E. C. Segar.

* Popeye's song at the end is a reference to his Popeye the Sailor Man end songs

* During the Post Fight analysis, Megumi's question is a reference to the Over 9000 meme with Toomi even adding in to it.

* Megumi's pun at the end is a reference to the song "One Thing" by One Direction
