Joshua vs Sans
Requested by whitewolf49
The World Ends with You vs Undertale, two charming but surprisingly overpowered individuals will go out in a fight that will leave you with nothing but question marks.
<Cue: Invader Theme>
Toomi: When it comes to video games, game creators are often times been warned over the kind of characters they create.
Megumi: Yeah, especially those who are aware of the game mechanics.
Toomi: Such as Joshua, Neku's second partner in the Reapers' Game
Megumi: And Sans, the skeleton sentry in Undertale, she's Sachi-san, Toomi-san and I'm Megumi-san
Sachi: And it's our job to analyse their weapons, armour and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle
Joshua pops out in What if Battles
<Cue: Yeah by OMFG>
Toomi: According to Sanae Hanekoma, before becoming directly involved in the UG, Joshua had the ability to see the UG while residing in the RG.
Megumi: Joshua had been "alone his whole life," presumably because no one believed what he was seeing and isolated him as a result. He would often visit Hanekoma to learn more about the Reaper's Game.
Sachi: But by the beginning of the events of the game, Joshua is already the Composer of Shibuya's Reaper Game. Roughly a week before Neku is sent to the UG, Joshua begins a game with Megumi Kitaniji, his Conductor, to decide whether or not to erase Shibuya.
Toomi: Kitaniji is given thirty days to save Shibuya from its corruption and impotence, but his Entry Fee is not explicitly revealed.
Sachi: Later, while being chased through the RG by Sho Minamimoto, Joshua and Minamimoto end up in the Udagawa Back Streets, where Neku Sakuraba is admiring one of CAT's murals.
Megumi: Joshua shoots at Minamimoto, barely missing. Minamimoto retaliates with a repeated fire, but Joshua stops the bullets midair and drops them to the ground. After Minamimoto flees, Joshua shoots Neku, to use him as his Proxy against Kitaniji as Neku has a great amount of Soul and a vivid Imagination.
Toomi: Joshua finally drops a Player pin on Neku which accounts for Neku's second player pin, in addition to the one he received for playing the Reaper's Game.
Sachi: Joshua attacks by typing in digits on a phone to summon random objects to bombard enemies from above. He has two ways of fighting: ground and levitation.
Megumi: He also doesn't block, preferring to dodge attacks instead and will only attack once his opponent finishes their combos. Pretty smart move.
Toomi: However, after a specific event near the end of his week, Joshua will be able to levitate in combat. When Joshua is in the air, every input to his combo tree inflicts damage and is generally stronger, especially against groups of enemies.
<Shows footages of Joshua throwing attacks from his phone>
Joshua
Teleportation
Telekinesis
Clairvoyance
Jesus Beam

Extreme Intelligience
Sachi: He's also capable of stopping bullets with his mind powers and is able to manipulate souls as well.
Toomi: He can also has upgrades on his flip phone no other phone has all thanks to Mr.Hanaekoma, the Producer of Shibuya, including a tracker, an inter-temporal camera though he can only use this specific feature three times a day, and a selfie taking feature that not only moves enemies but temporarily paralyzes them.
Megumi: Man. Hook me up a phone like that.
Feats
He can remove specific memories from people (similar to how Mewtwo got away with what he did in the first Pokémon movie)
Stopped bullets in mid-air with his mind powers
Once admitted to Sora that he was "kinda omniscient"
Able to use and manipulate souls, whether that be for Noise creation, bringing them back to life, or another use. This is how he brought Neku, Shiki, Beat, and Rhyme's souls and dreams to Traverse Town (this was also thanks to Rhyme's dreams specifically, or so he states)
Explained why Shiki looked like Eri instead of her original self in the bonus chapter, Another Day, stating that it was because Neku, or more accurately the player, refused to accept Shiki as she really was. That and admitted that the developers were probably too lazy to make a new Skiki sprite.
Joshua can break the fourth wall.
Able to tweak Shooter's Tin Pin launcher moments after Shooter beat Neku in a match.
Has upgrades on his flip phone no other phone has (all thanks to Mr.Hanaekoma, the Producer of Shibuya), including a tracker, an inter-temporal camera (though he can only use this specific feature three times a day), and a selfie taking feature that not only moves enemies but temporarily paralyzes them.
Toomi: However, despite his power, Joshua can be caught off guard. He is also capable of taking damage and once he's low of health, he will get Neku to continue for him.
Sachi: And considering how he is too used to others doing things for him, Joshua ends up being rather lazy and laid back, rarely getting his own hands dirty until necessary.
Weakness
Can be caught off guard
Too used to others doing things for him
Despite everyone's best efforts and Joshua's clever plan, the Spellican Dream Eater still managed to escape Traverse Town to somewhere out of Joshua's reach.
Lazy
Laid back
Composure powers does not work outside of Shibuya
Toomi: And despite how limitless his powers may seem, it is not really the case at all. Even with his clever plan, the Spellican Dream Eater still managed to escape Traverse Town to somewhere out of Joshua's reach.
Megumi: But no matter what happens, Joshua always has Neku to do the work for him.
Joshua: Well then Neku, shall we?
Sans shows What if Battles a Bad Time
<Cue: Livin' On a Prayer by Bon Jovi>
Toomi: Beneath the mountain lies many wonders that many are unaware of, a kingdom of monsters that were shunned by humans years ago
Megumi: But none of these monsters are as bizzare as Sans.
Sans: Human.
<Frisk then turns around, only to find a stout skeleton behind him. As he held his hand, a loud farting sound emits from the skeleton>
Sans: Heh, the old whoopie cushion in my hand trick...
Sachi: Sans the Skeleton works as a sentry alongside his younger brother Papyrus, guarding the town in case of any humans.
Megumi: But rather than capturing the human, lazybones here just allow Frisk to walk around, appearing out of nowhere and sometimes playing pranks.
Toomi: But depending on the route you take, when you reach the castle, Frisk or Chara ends up meeting Sans who challenged the him for a fight to avenge the death of Papyrus.
Sachi: And boy was he tough.
<Shows footages of Sans throwing around the player's soul>
Megumi: Holy shit! How are we supposed to fight this?
Toomi: Regardless, he is pretty useful as if you go with the Pacifist Run, he was among the many to help Frisk conquer Flowey before going up to the surface to stare at the sun
Sachi: Sans is certainly one formidable combatant, possessing incredible strength and high levels of power, even having meta-awareness, allowing him to knowingly twisted game mechanics and educated regarding the "timeline anomaly"
Toomi: And being a monster, Sans' body is mostly made of magic that is attuned to his own soul
Megumi: Um Toomi, don't everyone have a soul?
Toomi: Yes Megumi, but in the Undertale universe, a soul enables you to fight enemies. In San's case, he is able to move the victim's soul, usually to fling them around or changing the gravity so that they're forced to the wall rather than to the ground.
Sachi: And being a skeleton, Sans can manipulate bones, which can be use as either an offense or a defense type of attack.
Megumi: And he can even summon Gaster cannons. You know, the ones that look like T-rex skulls that can fire powerful gaster blasts?

Special Attack
Sachi: And like every game character, Sans has a Special Attack, which is basically...
Sans: It's literally nothing...
Megumi: What the hell?
Toomi: It's not exactly nothing, Sans basically locks the opponent in place so neither of them are able to do anything. He was prepared to use this to pressure the player into quitting and going another route.
Sachi: So basically, if Frisk or Chara tries to exit, Sans will push them back into the centre.
Megumi: Good move. But what's an even better move is that Sans always strikes first, attacking a lot faster than Chara could even anticipate.
Toomi: He's also able to teleport either himself or other people of things across the map and he's also one of the few Undertale characters who is aware of the "SAVE" function of the game though he cannot use it himself.
Megumi: And while many of the characters in Genocide run dies by one hit, Sans is the only character to pose as a genuine threat to Chara's plans, the other being Undyne.
Feats
Always strikes first on a Genocide Run, even when Chara knows exactly what's going to happen.
Uncannily good at making observational inferences, the prime example being able to correctly guess the number of times he's killed Chara on a Genocide Run just by reading their expression.
Capable of space manipulation to some extent, transporting himself and other objects/people in-and-out of battle.
Defeated Flowey, numerous times (Flowey stated that he caused him more than his fair share of resets), so Sans should be able to have at least some experience fighting soulless beings.
One of the few Undertale characters aware of the "SAVE" function, though he can't use it himself.
Possesses meta-knowledge of Undertale's turn-based mechanics.
Similar to Undertale's other endgame bosses, he is capable of utilizing extremely difficult-to-evade bullet hell.
Capable of sensing Chara/Frisk's murderous intent on a Genocide Run, recognizing them as inhuman.
He, alongside Undyne the Undying, is one of the two genuine threats to Chara, with in-game narration implying their dread of him.
Can play incidental music for failures on his trombone, which annoys Papyrus
Can withstand the heat of Hotland, which is hot enough to evaporate a styrofoam cup
Can dodge attacks from Frisk/Chara and presumably Flowey
Toomi: Sans' fourth wall breaking skill is sometimes absurb to the point he is able to correctly guess how many times he has killed Chara just by reading their expression
Megumi: Man, that guy is literally what happens if Deadpool and Bill Cipher had a kid. Who became a skeleton
Toomi: Though Sans certainly is the strongest boss in Undertale, even beating Flowey, he is ironically also the weakest character in the game.
Sachi: Indeed, you may think a powerful boss is able to take a lot of damage but in Sans' case, all it took to beat him is one hit.
<Shows footages of the player killing Sans with a single strike>
Megumi: Damn. And remembered when I called him lazy bones earlier. It turns out that Sans really is lazy, sometimes showing disinterest in everything and sometimes couldn't be bothered to fight. And while he is aware of the "SAVE" function, Sans didn't bother trying to manipulate it, knowing that not even he is able to do so
Weakness
Has only 1 HP and 1 DF, making him the frailest character in Undertale. He suffered at least 99999 damage during his defeat against Chara and most likely can't tank any other kind of attack.
Can't be bothered to fight, due to understanding the power of the SAVE file, and the futility of trying. That changes only when you methodically murder EVERY MONSTER YOU POSSIBLY CAN. Not even the death of his brother can get him to muster more than a few contemptuous words. However, when he IS serious (fought Chara since he knew what would happen if he didn't stop them), he's more than a force to be reckoned with.
Despite being one of the strongest monsters in the underground, he suffers from realistic fatigue and shows signs of tiring out in the later stretches of his boss fight.
A slight tendency to overestimate his prowess, letting his guard down to mock Chara, immediately resulting in a fatal blow.
Puzzle Trap: Junior Jumble
Toomi: While Sans is able to throw an absurb amount of damage, even as a video game boss, Sans has also shown signs of realistic fatigue, losing energy the longer the battle stretches.
Sachi: And Sans is pretty arrogant as well, letting his guard down to mock Chara which ended up resulting in his death
Megumi: But lazy or not, once Megalovania starts playing, you better be praying or else Sans is gonna give your ass a real bad time.
Sans: Welp. Sorry old lady, this is why I never make promises. It's a beautiful day outside, birds are singing, flowers are blooming...on days like these, kids like you...should be burning in hell.
Toomi: Alright, the combatants are set, let's end this debate once and for all.
Sachi: Don't forget to vote, comment what you think of the fight.
Megumi: Yeah, but right now, it's time for a Death Battle!
Fight
Castle
<Cue: Undertale OST: Undertale>
Standing in the middle of the castle, Sans stood at the centre, snoring to himself.
Just then, he heard the sound of a voice calling out to him.
???: Hey you!
Sans immediately snaps his eyes open, looking left and right.
Right at that moment, a short petite figure lands in front of Sans, startling him.
Sans recognizes the creature in front of him.
The creature is no other than a human.
The boy smiles and he greets him
Joshua: Hey, I'm Josh by the way.
Sans: Oh hey Josh, I'm just waiting here for a human, have you seen one?
Joshua looks around and he shrugs, saying.
Joshua: Not that I know of. Why?
Joshua began lifting his eyebrows as Sans spoke, this time in a rather disturbing tone.
Sans: No matter, on days like this, humans...should burn in hell.
Announcer: Fight!
Without warning, one of Sans irises glows bright blue as the skeleton lifts up his arm, telekinetically lifting Joshua off his feet.
Joshua: Hey hey! Whoa!
WHAM!!! BAM!!! POW!!!
Sans rough slams Joshua around the walls of the castle before dropping him onto the ground.
<Cue: Megalovania>
Joshua the whips out his phone and he looks up facing Sans.
Sans raises up his hands, sending several long bones flying towards him.
Joshua lifts up into the air, dodging every bone flying while tapping at his phone.
Several spheres of energy flies out of the ground, flying straight towards Sans.
Sans shifts to the side, winking at Joshua and he shrugs, questioning him.
Sans: What? You think I'm going to just stand there and take it?
Sans then lifts up his hand, creating several Gaster Cannons before pointing them at Joshua.
Joshua: Is that all?
Joshua lifts of into the air, swerving his body to the side just as the Gaster Cannons opens their jaws, launching powerful Gaster blasts at him.
THOOM!!! THOOM!!! THOOM!!!
Joshua moves across the floor, narrowingly dodging all the bones Sans throws at him.
Just as one struck the ground, Joshua pulls the bone out and he throws it at the skeleton, forcing Sans to swerve to the side.
Sans: That the best you can do?
Joshua: Not even close.
Sans then stood by just as Joshua moves forward, raising his hand just as he closes in.
WHOOM!!!
Joshua: Huh?
Right at that moment, Joshua felt his entire body freezing in place just as Sans says.
Sans: Game over.
WHAM!!! BAM!!! POW!!!
Sans shifts his hand up and down, left to right, sending Joshua crashing throughout the halls of the castle.
BAM!!! BAM!!! BAM!!!
Joshua winces as he felt his entire body crashing through the stone walls of the castle before feeling his entire body getting tugged downwards forcefully, crashing backfirst into the ground.
Just as Joshua is sent flying up, the boy began noticing something peculiar happening.
Sans attacks are slowing down, his strength in his strikes dwindling in each passing moment.
Right at that exact moment, Sans immediately ceases his attack, dropping Joshua onto the floor.
Joshua lands gracefully onto the floor just as Sans says.
Sans: Alright. Enough playing around. Time for my ultimate attack.
Joshua stood back, bracing just as Sans readies himself, saying to him.
Sans: Here...goes...nothing.
There was a long pause before Joshua questions out.
Joshua: What?
Sans: Yeah. It's literally nothing.
Joshua: Wait, what is the meaning of this?
Sans: One of your turns you're just gonna kill me so...it's not gonna be your turn. I'm just gonna keep having my turn until you give up.
Joshua just stood there, tapping at his phone as Sans stood rooted in his position, his eyes barely keeping open.
As Sans began dosing off, Joshua raises up his hand, sending down a hail of Jesus Beam down onto Sans.
VREEEEE!!!
BAM!!!
The sheer impact of the blow shook Sans entire body, sending an impending wave of pain across him.
The skeleton drops onto the floor, coughing out blood just as Joshua pulls out his Angel Gun, pointing it at him.
Joshua: Oh well, looks like I win.
However, just as Joshua is about to open fire, right at that moment...
BAM!!!
A single bone struck Joshua hard in the face, causing him to drop his gun.
As Joshua drops onto the floor, Sans lifts up his hand, summoning a several Gaster Cannons around Joshua and he said.
Sans: You know, I wanted to tell a skeleton pun, but I don't have the guts for it. Whoops! I lied!
Sans then clenches his fist, causing the Gaster Cannons to launch a powerful barrage of Gaster Blasts at Joshua.
THOOM!!!
Joshua: Neku, how could you?
Joshua could only mutter just as the blasts struck onto him, causing him to scream out in agony
Joshua: ARGHHHHHH!!!
Joshua lets out one final agonizing scream just as his entire body went off in a fiery explosion.
KABOOM!!!
As the flames slowly dies down, Sans turns to face the viewers and he said.
Sans: Welp, you're BONED!
KO!
<Cue: New Earth by Bruce Falconer>
Megumi: You got to have those puns do you Sans?
Toomi: Joshua may have held the tactical advantage in allowing Sans to tire himself out and he certainly has a much higher pain tolerance.
Sachi: Joshua like many of the other characters in his game can take a certain amount of damage without dying whereas it takes only one hit to defeat Sans, leaving a possibility that if he had taken any of the other throws, he would have instantly died.
Toomi: While tactics, durability are an advantage, you can't really compare them to skills and raw power.
Megumi: I mean Sans is able to kill Frisk and Chara many times in a row and he is one of the only Undertale characters to be stronger than Flowey, who can throw attacks a hell lot stronger than Joshua
Sachi: And while Joshua certainly is smart, he is nothing like Sans who is able to know how many times he killed the player along with how many people Chara has killed.
Megumi: Not to mention, Joshua rarely fights on his own while Sans on the other hand is more than able to handle fights on his own, even being the only one aside from Undyne to pose a serious threat to Chara's plans
Toomi: By having the advantage in raw power, skills and intelligience, this is what gives Sans the win over Joshua
Megumi: Looks like someones funny bone is broken!
Sachi: The winner is Sans
Sans: That's the expression of someone who's died seven times in a row.
Toomi: Hey guys, thank you so much for checking out our battle in What if Battles 2.
Sachi: If you want more content like this, don't forget to add this in your library and comment if you have any idea for a fight.
Megumi: Until then, next time on What if Battles....
