CHAPTER TWO: A NEW FACE

The funeral ended just under and hour later. Some people said their final goodbyes and others said absolutely nothing, there were many who were just in a rush to leave and move on with their lives.

A gloomy aura wondered in the heavy smoke filled air outside, which was where Remington stood. He waited outside the car next to Sebastian, who was smoking his second cigarette today.

"Remington?" A girl asks. She stood about five feet away.

Remington didn't recognize the girl but he didn't want to be rude. So he stepped away from Sebastian to talk to her. She had obviously come from the funeral, Her hair was in a loose braid, and her black dress reached just above her knees. She looked as if she had just been crying.

Nothing about her seemed familiar, but she couldn't be much younger than Emerson was. With the innocent look she had, he just assumed that she was a girl from his school, someone he spoke to a little bit before he dropped out. He wondered why she would want to speak with him?

"I'm sorry, I didn't introduce myself earlier, I'm Haley," She says holding out her hand.

Remington gives her a weak smile and shakes her hand.

"So, you knew Emerson?" Remington asks.

"Yeah, I- I was his girlfriend," she says.

Remington noticed that she looked as if she was about to cry. He couldn't help but feel bad for the girl. He could tell that she really loved Emerson.

"I'm sorry, I'm sure this is hard on you," Remington says softly.

"I'm sorry too, I couldn't imagine losing a sibling, especially since he seemed really close to you guys, he's talked about how he wanted me to meet you. I just didn't think it's be over this." Haley says looking down.

Remington nods, he still held that small smile. It was comforting to know Emerson still thought about him after he left.

"So he talked about me?" Remington asks.

"You and Sebastian, he didn't say too much but he said positive things about you both," Haley says.

"How did you meet Emerson?" He asks.

His curiosity to know what his brother had been up to since he moved grew. He wanted to know what Emerson did while he was gone.

"It was at a party a couple years ago, he noticed that I was upset and he began talking to me." She says.

"A party? Emerson doesn't seem like the type of person who would party." Remington says.

"Oh trust me, he didn't care for them, but he went often, he just stuck around the wrong people sometimes." She sighs.

"What do you by mean wrong people?" Remington asks.

"He did drugs when I first met him and went out a lot to party. It scared me seeing him like that but he stopped doing all of that about a year later right before we started dating. I'm just surprised he killed himself, with the way he talked he seemed to wanted to live forever. He talked about the future frequently."

"I guess he couldn't deal with living in this broken world... No matter how much he wants to change it there's some things that will be the same, some of those things being parts of the past." Remingtons sighs.

"Remington? Would you say that there's another side to Emerson? Like he's a different person around me and other people than you or Sebastian." She asks.

"Not quite a completely different person, it just seems weird that there's a lot I didn't know about him." Remington sighs.

"Yeah. Would you maybe be interested in looking through some of Emerson's things with me?" Haley asks.

"I don't know... Would he want us to?" Remington asks.

She pauses and sighs a stray tear streaming down her face, "he called me that night. He told me there was a box under his bed that I could look through once the job was done. He never gave me a reason why he told me that the contents in the box would explain everything..."

"So you knew he was going to do it?" Remington asks.

He didn't even notice he rose his voice. Haley's face changed, she was startled by his tone. By the time Remington tried to apologize she had already began talking.

"I did, but by the time I got there it was too late... The ambulance was in the driveway and you were already there... I was too scared to go to the hospital and now I wish I did..." She says holding back tears.

Remington nods, trying to think of what to say.

"I'm sorry if that sounded rude at all," he sighs.

"It's fine, I know that things are hard for you right now." she says drying her tears.

She smeared the remains of her mascara that she tried desperately to take off after she cried the first time.

"Well, I'm only going to be in town for the weekend. So, do you want to look through everything tomorrow?" Remington asks.

"Yeah, that sounds good..." She sighs, "Do you want to meet up at his place at one in the tomorrow afternoon?"

Remington nods and looks back at Sebastian who just finished his cigarette, "I should probably go, but I'll see you tomorrow then."

"Yeah... Thank you Remington..." She says softly.

"For what?" He asks.

"For being an amazing brother to Emerson while he was alive... He was grateful for you... Goodbye Remington." She says, a soft smile showing through her tears.

She walks away her braid swaying from side to side as she made her way to her car. Remington stands there in confusion as he watches her leave.

"Who was she?" Sebastian asks.

"Just someone Emerson knew..." Remington says.
