CHAPTER ONE: THE FUNERAL
"Remington?" Sebastian asks, Remington stood up trying to walk away but he grabbed Remingtons wrist, "hey, look at me. Please."
"Sebastian, I'm fine, okay." Remingtons says.
"You just walked out in the middle of our brothers funeral. You can't tell me you're fine, Remington. Come here, please, I'm not going to let you be alone right now..." Sebastian sighs offering Remington a hug.
Remington shakes his head and looks down tears clouding his vision.
"It just doesn't feel real anymore Sebastian... I-I can't believe he's actually gone..." Remington says tears beginning to stream down his face.
"I know Rem, it's going to be hard... Can you please just promise me you won't do the same thing he did?" Sebastian asks pulling his brother into a hug. He holds Remington tightly listening to his younger brothers quiet sobs.
"I won't do it... I know it's not what Emerson would want me to do..." Remington says laying his head on Sebastians shoulder trying to calm his breathing.
He looks at the door leading to the entrance of the room. He knew he should go back but couldn't bring himself to go and see his brothers body again or even see the look on his mothers face.
"You probably don't want to miss the rest of it..."
Remington sighs letting go of Sebastian, "you're right, just give me a minute, okay."
"Yeah of course, I'll be in there if you need me..."
"Thank you..."
Sebastian nods and enters the room once again. Remington could barely move let alone go into that room again. But he couldn't miss the rest of his own brothers funeral. He wiped away the last few tears and took a deep breath before entering once again.
The solemn vibe wouldn't go away, and he didn't even know if he could deal with it anymore. He looked ahead and saw Sebastian. He didn't know who else to go to, so he began walking over to his older brother.
"Remington," his mom says trying to get his attention.
"Oh, hey, mom," Remington sighs.
He could barely look at her. It broke him more than he already was to see her like that. She just lost her youngest son so it was no surprise when he saw her mascara had run down her cheeks.
"You're brave for going up there, Remington... You said some things that I could barely put into words." She says.
"I- thanks..." Remington mumbles.
"Honey, it's not your fault this happened, no matter what, even if you had noticed he wasn't okay. You can't think about the what if's, he's gone. There was nothing you could have done to change that." She says to him.
Remington nods barely paying attention. Instead he looks around. He doesn't even see his father anywhere... Yet he sees other people here who were likely on their dads side of the family. His father didn't even bother to come, after being gone for 10 years, why should he?
"So dad isn't even here?" Remington asks still looking around.
"No, I guess not." She sighs.
"I thought he would at least have the decency to come to this." Remingtons says.
He didn't know if he should be mad or not. Their dad hurt all of them when he left them but he was still their father. What father misses their own sons funeral?
This thoughts were cut off when another person stepped up to talk about Emerson. Remington looked to see it was Sebastian. Remington goes and sits down trying to focus on his older brother who was about to start talking.
"There's not really much I can say that Remington hasn't, except one thing. I know if I didn't say something about him now I know I'll regret it. Emerson, he was my younger brother, he was such a bright person, and was such a delight to everyone. He brought a light in this world that I always thought would be infinite. Even though he's gone, wherever he is he's still shining. Emerson had so many dreams he always knew what he wanted to do and he would set his mind to it. When we were younger all he would talk about is the future, he wondered if the world would change or if he would be able to chase his dreams. I told him if he set his mind to it he could do it, I told him he could do anything. There was no doubt in my mind he could have done it, he could have accomplished what he wanted. His big dreams made me think about my goals and they came nowhere near his. He was a dreamer, and it hurts the most knowing he cut his life short before he could achieve them." Sebastian says this with tears in his eyes. He didn't know how he could bring himself to even talk about Emerson without breaking down, but he did it.
Sebastian sighs and goes to sit down, he spots a seat next to Remington and sits there. Remington looks up at Sebastian tears rolling down his cheeks once again.
"Dads not even here..." Remington mumbles.
Sebastian nods and puts his arm around Remington, "He's not going to come back Rem..."
"I just thought maybe he would show, Emerson was still his son..."
"You would think so, but dad wasn't a good person, Emerson wouldn't want him to come here only because he felt obligated to, he never really cared about us."
"I know... Sometimes I just wonder what would happen if he did come back..."
"Remington, there's nothing wrong with wondering but what dad won't come back. He ruined what he had with us, he doesn't have the strength to come back and fix it." Sebastian says.
Remington nods and looks up at Sebastian seeing that his older brother also seemed on the edge of breaking down.
"Do you think everything will ever be okay?" Remington asks.
"Not for a while Rem..." Sebastian sighs.
"Then when, when will it all be over?" He asks small sobs escaping him.
Sebastian rubs Remingtons back trying to calm him down. Remington looked up at Sebastian wondering if he had the answer to his question.
"It will never truly be over. The only thing we can do is try and make things better." Remington saw tears escape from Sebastians eyes after he said that.
Remington held on to his older brother tight, because the only thing they could do is stick together. Without Emerson they only had each other.
