Chapter 48: The Lullaby Of Something Fragile.

I allowed Hannah to fall from my grasp and land on the floor.

I quickly scurried to Ciels side and fell to my knees.

I carefully reached down and scooped up his small fragile hand in my own.

I looked down into his cold icy eyes and watched for a miracle to happen.

As I watched, I felt a strong gentle hand rest on my shoulder.

The scent of vanilla and mint filled my nose, allowing me to know that it was Sebastian.

I lowered my unoccupied hand down to Ciels blood red eyes and gently closed them.

When I was finished I turned my head to Sebastian.

"This was not part of the deal Sebastian. Claude was supposed to allow Ciel to live."

"Indeed I was, and I have not failed my end of the bargain."

Sebastian and I glanced up only to be met with Claude.

A sense of anger surged throughout my body.

I gently sat Ciels hand on the ground and stood up.

"Claude, he is gone! That was not part of the deal! We have brought Hannah back to you, alive, and we arrive only to be met with this?" I shouted in anger.

Claude removed his glasses and reached into his breast pocket. He pulled out a small white handkerchief and cleaned the smudges from the surface of his spectacles.

When he was finished, he carefully placed them back onto the bridge of his nose.

"You see Eva, I have held up my end of the bargain. Ciel is still alive. He is just unconscious at the moment. You can not hear his heartbeat for he no longer possesses one, he is, indeed, a demon after all." He said with a disgusted tone.

"Why is he unconscious!" I shouted.

"He would not keep quiet my dear. I had to do something until you arrived."

"Alright Claude. You have Hannah, what else do you want?" I asked.

Claude pondered at my question for a moment.

"I want his soul."

I glanced towards Sebastian and back to Claude.

"He no longer has a soul Claude."

"Ahhh, but he does. You see, when he was turned, Sebastian left it untouched, it is untainted." He said.

"Why do you want his soul so bad Claude? Why when you could collect any number of souls ever imaginable." I asked.

"His soul dwells in darkness, yet remains unstained by it. It's vexed us, tantalized us, driven us mad, and I want it. I need it, desperately." He said.

"You can't have it Clau-" Sebastian stopped me.

He leaned into my ear and whispered.

"Eva, if Claude retrieves his soul it will not harm Ciel in any way. The young master does not require a soul to continue to exist. I lost my soul ages ago, yet I am still here. I imagine the same outcome for the young master."

I slowly nodded and returned my attention to Claude.

"Alright Claude, you can have his soul, but nothing else."

Claude hesitated for a moment before he answered.
"No, Ciels soul is not what I desire. I have another request."

Sebastian and I exchanged glances.

"What is it you desire Claude?" Sebastian asked.

Claude pushed his glasses back onto the bridge of his nose.

"I wish to form a contract."

"With who?" I asked.

"I wish to form a contract with your daughter."

I felt a singe of pain come from the pit of my stomach.

"That is not comical in the least bit Claude. We all know she is no longer with us." I said in a saddened tone.

"Ahh, but she is. You see, the physician that extracted her from your womb was also apart of the cult that claimed you and Ciel Phantomhive. He kidnapped your unborn daughter and brought her here. She has lived here ever since, and she has grown into a lovely toddler might I add. She is growing at an alarming rate."

Anger? Hatred? No, those petty words could not possibly describe how I felt towards that incompetent bastard. How could he. How could he do such an unmentionable thing?

I slowly looked down and took a deep breath. A feeling I have never felt before, not even with Ash, coursed through my veins.

My eyes changed from blood red to pure black. I slowly looked back up at Claude.

I slowly took small steps towards that poor excuse of a demon.

"How. How could you be so empty hearted. How could you ruin two people's lives without even batting a worthless eye. How!" I shouted as I picked up my pace and began running towards him.

"Eva, no!" Sebastian shouted, but I tuned him out.

I ran towards Claude and tackled him to the ground with my hands wrapped tightly around his neck.

I looked into his disgusting golden eyes as he smirked at me in return.

"You can try and kill me all you'd like, but that would mean putting an end to your precious Ciel as well."

I turned my head slightly and saw Hannah holding Ciel by the throat.

I turned my attention back to Claude and pondered at his statement.

"You can not kill him if I do something as simple as this."

I unlatched my fingers from around his throat. I balled my left fist up and rared back, but before I could hit him, something caught me.

"Eva, as much as I would enjoy seeing you give him what he deserves, I can not allow you to do so. We are not aware of the limits they would go if you enrage them." Sebastian said to me.

I nodded angrily and climbed off of Claude.

He carefully stood up and brushed himself off.

"My my, such a large temper in such a small body." He said.

"Give me my child now, dammit!" I hissed at him.

"Now now Eva, you wouldn't want anything to happen to your poor daughter now would you?" He said in a maniacal tone.

"If you lay one hand on her I wi-" I stopped myself for a moment. Sebastian is being very quiet.

I slowly turned my head towards Sebastian, and what I saw will haunt me forever.

There stood Sebastian, quiet as a mouse. His eyes were a dangerous maroon. His demonic glow casted a terrifying shadow and he looked as if he were going to rip someone's intestines right out of their abdomen.

I slowly walked towards him, very carefully.

"S-Sebastian? Are you alright d-dear?" I asked in a shaky voice.

He did not reply, instead he stalked slowly towards Claude.

Claude took the hint and began backing up a few inches.

"Sebastian, killing me is not going to save your daughter." Claude said.

Sebastian squinted his eyes and chuckled quietly.

"How dare you Claude Faustus. How dare you make a mockery out of my family. How dare you take away my unborn child. How dare you lay a hand on my young master, the very thought sickens me." He said, sadism dripping with every word.

As Sebastian walked towards Claude, he slowly began to morph into his true form.

"Love, close your eyes and make sure the young masters eyes are closed as well. I am going to count down from ten, and when I tell you, you can open your eyes." He said.
"A-alright." I replied.

"Do you understand? It is very important that you keep them closed until I tell you otherwise."

"Y-yes. I understand."

Just before I closed my eyes, a single black feather fell to the ground, then the air suddenly became chilled.

I heard the clank of boots against the marble flooring, then they stopped.

And then all of a sudden male screams raced throughout the entire manor, screams that chilled me to the very bone.

"Ten." He bagan to count.

"Nine, eight." With every number he said, the screams became more horrific.

"Seven."

"Six." This time it was a females scream, Hannah.

"Five."

"Four." The sound of flesh being ripped straight off of the bone filled my ears and made its way into my head.

"Three."

"Two." Two final blood curdling screams echoed throughout the hollowed mansion.

"One."

And then everything fell silent.
