Prologue Part Two

"My life in that village was quite peaceful. My mom and dad took care of me when I was a baby, but the other kids in the village sort of hated me."

"Why would anyone hate you? You're great!" Papyrus exclaims.

"Well," I laugh, "That's kinda funny, I guess."

"How are humans hating you funny to you? This is not good, Frisk! We need to fix this!"

"Papyrus, we can't fix this unless I ever get back to the Surface." I remind him.

"Oh, Frisk, always the one with common sense." The skeleton mutters. "You can continue the story any time you want, by the way."

I'm silent.

"Frisk? Are you going to continue the story?"

"I'm having a hard time remembering what my childhood was like. I'm sorry, Papyrus."

There's not a reply from the skeleton.

"Papyrus?"

He's asleep.

Sighing, I pull my blanket up over my head and close my eyes. Why don't I remember anything from the Surface? Whenever I try to think about my old village, my head starts to hurt. But I need to think about it! Papyrus and Sans and all of the other monsters have done so much for me. They're asking for one simple thing from me, and that's to tell them about the surface. I don't know what I'll do if I can't even tell them one thing that they want to know.

"Papyrus?" My small voice rings out in the darkness with only my night light plugged in to remind me that I'm not alone.

I wasn't expecting an answer, but to my surprise, Papyrus's comfortingly high-pitched voice responds. "Yes, Frisk? Are you okay?"

I take a deep breath. "Am I a terrible friend?"

I can see the silhouette of the tall skeleton crawling to the side of the bed where I'm resting. He reaches down, and with his big gloved hands, picks me up. He carefully places me on a pillow. Wordlessly, he grabs his phone from the bedside table, dialing a number.

"Hello?"

"Undyne!" Papyrus exclaims.

"Papyrus, it's 12:30 in the morning. Why are you up, and more importantly, calling me?" Undyne asks tiredly.

"I need to ask you and Sans a question." Papyrus declares loudly. "Well, actually, Frisk does."

"What is it, Frisk?" Sans is suddenly at the phone.

"Uh, um, never mind, sorry to bother you!" I say worriedly and quickly hang up.

"What was that?" Papyrus asks.

"I think I'm just tired." I say with a yawn.

"We all are, Frisk. We all are." The tall skeleton murmurs, wrapping his arms around me.

I hug him back with a smile.
